OldNick Posted 26 November, 2025 Posted 26 November, 2025 Manning gets lots of unfaircriticism in my opinion, Yes he may only be top Championship quality but he gives his all, and his 2 delicious crosses created2 goals. Well done Ryan, you deserve praise 12

bugenhagen Posted 26 November, 2025 Posted 26 November, 2025 Like most players of his quality, he has both strenghts and flaws. If we can get the most out of his good qualities, and shore up around his worst, then he can play a big part for us this season. 4
Lighthouse Posted 26 November, 2025 Posted 26 November, 2025 He’s certainly been playing like a man possessed under TE but let’s not pretend he hadn’t been putting in some ropey performances before that. At Derby in particular he acted like an absolute helmet.
Farmer Saint Posted 26 November, 2025 Posted 26 November, 2025 He reminds me of Danny Fox, shit in defence, but really decent going forwards 5

Manning is better in a 3-5-2 or whatever as there's less defending to do. I do think he stands off players because he knows he's not very fast. Either that or he just doesn't know how to defend. Having said that he's proving a real threat going forwards so it's swings and roundabouts. 2
Jack Posted 26 November, 2025 Posted 26 November, 2025 He’s great going forward in a team looking to dominate, and an absolute liability in his own half when we’re under the cosh. Hopefully we’ll be doing well enough to not really require his defensive ‘skills’ going forward 1
SaintNate Posted 26 November, 2025 Posted 26 November, 2025 Really really decent player at this level. Don't think we could do much better. Keep it up Ryan! 2
coalman Posted 27 November, 2025 Posted 27 November, 2025 I think he's a midfielder trapped in a left back position. I know that midfielder was his original position and he seems to enjoy getting forwards. That's a very strong part of his game. I've also seen him go missing in the defensive aspect of his game, particularly when we're on top and applying pressure. The trouble is that a decent team is going to exploit that as happened many times during our last Championship season. If he can add that defensive part to his game he can be a really good player for us. Otherwise he's a decent player that's also periodically a liability. It's the same as with Stephens who is a great backs to the wall centre back but can switch off. Or Smallbone who is great as passing and finding pockets of space but isn't going to win any battles in the middle of the park. 1
bugenhagen Posted 27 November, 2025 Posted 27 November, 2025 I don’t think he is going to improve much defensively, but maybe his teammates and our tactics can help cover his shortcomings. I think Tonda said an interesting thing in the pre match presser when he was asked if Fellows would get problems defensively against a better calibre of wingers. His response was something like: I don’t see it as a one v one, it is something we as a team must deal with. Could also be one of the reasons for bringing in Quarshie to have better cover on Mannings side. 2

Certainly this season his contributions going forward have far outweighed any defensive issues so for me he is a nailed starter and his brother @Manningo can sometimes be spotted amongst the travelling fans!
Turkish Posted 16 hours ago Posted 16 hours ago Despite what a lot of you donuts think I really like him. His balls in are class and he seems like a great lad hope he signs a new deal 4

Jack Posted 9 hours ago Posted 9 hours ago (edited) If he could just learn that being a defender means he’s got to try and stop the attacking player he’s up against, he’d be a top player. Great going forward but he’s directly responsible for loads of goals conceded every season. Saturday was a classic case, just ball watching, too slow to react and got nowhere near close enough to the goalscorer. Edited 9 hours ago by Jack 7

gio1saints Posted 4 hours ago Posted 4 hours ago VeryGood professional. Good guy and popular with squad. Excellent left foot cross and free kick delivery. The more important set pieces become the greater esteem he’ll be held. Not the paciest full back ever to help him track back quick or recover so his on field positioning and concentration at all times needs be extra good- which because he’s human, it is not. That’s Only area I’d be trying to install some better habits if I was Tonda. At any rate : He is a Very very Good Championship player - certainly top six starting standard. Not going to ever be an amazing EPL player being realistic but would not disgrace himself in a well managed four at the back competitiveEPL team ie if Tonda was there.

Arguably had a good season in the Premier League - weirdly; and did great again last season. I'd be offering him a new contract.
davefizzy14 Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago I've always liked Manning. Sublime delivery from set pieces and has improved defensively for me. Hope he signs a new contract 😊 1

Not sure you can put all of the blame on Manning there. Downes is just as much to blame as the edge of the box is his area to defend. Manning goes with Coburn to (not) stop the cross. Downes isn’t looking for the ball once it comes back out and then just stands there once he turns around. Schlotterbeck doesn’t close it down either. Manning is the only one that makes an attempt to get to the man, he was slow to react I’ll give you that but I think he probably expected Downes to be the one to engage. It’s poor defending all round. 2
Dell McDellFace Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago Ryan Manning is a top-notch crosser of the ball and set-piece taker. He is effective enough one-on-one with a winger or attacking fullback - even a pacey one. His recovery when he's caught up field and we lose the ball isn't the best, Bree is better but also not the best. But this is a deliberate tactic and the deep midfielder (Bragg or Downes) is tasked with covering, or one of the centre backs has to come out. This is where we have been caught out (e.g. at Watford), and I don't blame Manning, he was doing his job.

Absolutely this - he might be decent from the middle of the park but he’s a shite defender and has cost us on many occasions. Primary job of a LB is that he defends, which Manning doesn’t do well and why in a back 4 I’d much rather see Welington, who can attack but also has a better engine to track back. I watch Manning go walk about with complete shock sometimes - like on Saturday when he waltzed over to the advanced right hand side of the field literally taking up Fellows position - WTF?!

Before he finally realises he’s meant to be doing some defending, he’s stood ball watching in a position that’s completely out of the game, near the goal line. The fact that he’s not a million miles away from getting a block in tells you that if he’d reacted like a proper defender, he’d have had a decent chance of getting a block in or preventing a shot completely 1

He offers loads going forward so it’s a trade off. Just feels like surely some of the mistakes he makes should be coached out of him. Like don’t go wandering up the pitch then pass it straight to the right winger like he did against Watford. And don’t stand there watching the opposition right back as he lines up a shot on goal as he did on Saturday. Pretty basic stuff 1

He went to try and stop the cross, someone should be covering that area, usually Downes but Schlotterberg should see Downes isn’t looking and close the shot down. If he does the ball likely doesn’t deflect off him and into the net. Out of the 3 manning is the least at fault for me.

Wellington is the better defender but can’t put the ball in like Manning did for Larins header. Manning tried to shut the shot down but was too far away and slow to get there
