So Guly's contract stipulating he had to play at least 15 minutes every game wasn't a wind-up after all...?

I admitted that was.

I admitted that was a day or so later. I only said it because I got bored with people dismissing what I’d said because it was t what they want to hear.

Fair enough. I was only reminded of the Guly thing as Saint Garrett mentioned above he started vs Man City.

While we're at it, Cortese's spoon hunt... did that really happen? I'm praying that it did. Too good a story to have been made up.

100% true. He had a personal cutlery case only he was allowed to use, a spoon went missing and he took a load of staff off their jobs to look for it. Plus other weird stuff he also had his own personal toilet, made the staff address him as Mr Cortese and everyone had to leave  a corridor if he was walking down it, he was mental. The proof is there if he was so good why has no other club snapped him up?

He made so many people miserable when he was there, I have that from someone who worked there. A very strict authoritarian way about him, literally no one could do a thing without going through him first. I'm surprised people didn't have to ask him before they went for a toilet break.

He did meddle in transfers and we lost out on people like Ward, Jamal because of his pedantic ways.

The guy was a control freak and a nut job. He was using someone else's money and that's when KL got involved I guess, she'd seen enough and I would imagine she'd heard some stories about how he was to people at the club.

I know it was plastered all over the news as 'MELTDOWN' when he left, but there were parties in the corridors of St Mary's, trust me.

100% true. He was that mental he even employed spies round the club, offering people pay rises and promotions if they grassed other employees for saying things about him.

I said all this at the time and got laughed at,  I’ve always maintained he did a reasonable job in league one but half way through our championship season things started to unravel, he started thinking he was infallible and knew more than everyone else he started to dictate to Adkins who should and shouldn’t play, Adkins knew he was on borrowed time from the reading game we lost which cost us the championship. All in all there will always be some who think he could do no wrong but our success was inspite of him not because of him

You’re getting your black Africans mixed up Garret. It was Mayuka he was loaned out for, Mane didn’t join until 2 years later. Ignoring the causal racism though Sharp was right to be frustrated at being shipped out for Mayuka, he was a dreadful signing and Billy couldn’t have done any worse than him.

I posted a lot at the time about Corteses relationship with Adkins and how he was meddling in first team matters. Of course I was laughed at told I was trolling and didn’t know what I was on about. Here we’ve got it first hand from a player who was there at the time. Wonder if Sharp was trolling every one too 🤷🏾‍♂️

I’m not, because the conversation was when we played in Sheffield, and got knocked out the cup. He was in the stand that night in the home end, and Mane played and was useless. Think he had just left permanently for Leeds and still believed he could offer us something, and then we signed Mane, he was not impressed at the time.

He was (imagine still is) the leading English born goalscorer in professional football. He is an excellent Championship/League 1 player where you get the extra space and not the best defence although he managed a couple or so last season, not the best Premiership player

I have a little chuckle every time I remember that the Cortese programme cover against Leeds, in the first game back in the Championship was real 🤣

When i first saw it i thought it was a wind up. Sums up the egotistical lunatic.

He was terrible, although despite popular myth Mane had played a few decent games for us up until then. Mayuka came on as sub that night for Mane with about 20 minutes to go and was even worse, id much rather have Sharp of the bench than that useless tosser that for sure.

Just popping in to say, if the SU fans aren't singing his name to the tune of Baby Shark, then I don't know what we're even bothering with life for.

Billy Sharp has announced his retirement

Scored vital goals in 11/12 for promotion

Good luck for the future

Great to see him as part of the Sky team today and looked very happy with the result.

Apparently Sky did a great montage to celebrate his career, hopefully they put it online.

He got emotional with the messages from former team-mates plus the montage, understandably.

I always felt he was treated badly by Saints overall. His goals were vital to us in 11/12 and for a striker who knew where the goal was we didn't give him a chance in the Prem. Especially given all he was dealing with on the personal front at the time with their son, but maybe I'm just an oversentimental tart.

He couldn’t have failed to contribute more than Emmanuel Mayuka.

Think it was suspected at the time but Adkins admitted a few years ago that Cortese forced him to play Mayuka over him.

Absolutely top bloke and a key signing whose goals kept us ahead of West Ham in the race for automatic promotion. Aside from the obvious two goals against the Skates, he also scored a brace away at the Posh which got us one leg in the door with two games left to play. Then he opened the scoring after a nervy first fifteen minutes against Coventry and suddenly all the weight was off our shoulders. Great memories for such a short Saints career.

That said, if we are being brutally honest, he was never a PL player. Any remorse on that part would be purely sentimental rather than any great loss to the team on the pitch. Cortese was ruthless in a way in which we completely failed to be last time we got promoted. Sharp, Hammond, Hooiveld, Chaplow, Fox, Butters, Richardson and Kelvin all served us with distinction on our way up the leagues but were never going to feature much in the next step we took into Europe.
