One Year Ago Today...

A Football Chairman, concerned at the progress of his side and the imminent danger of relegation and the underperformance of his players made an appointment that would ultimately save the club that season.

One year on, the man appointed by the chairman sits at the top of League One, whilst his old team are again facing relegation, with a 'Head Coach' who is Mr Chocolate..not much respect from the players then???

Nigel Pearson was brought in here one year ago today.

Well done Leon.

Shame on you Rupert and Mikey...you don't know what you're doing.:(

One year ago today a Football Chairman realised he'd f::cked up stalling on the decision of appointing a new manager...after seeing his caretaker manager duo royally f::ck up our chances of progressing to the quarter finals of the FA Cup against a lower league side and a draw against another Championship side...

Concerned my arse...panicking at our progress more like...

I'll agree that the appointment saved us from relegation...i'll not agree that i see any point to this thread though...

Concerned is taking decisive action AND ADMITTING YOUR MISTAKE.

Panicking is appointing from within. (WHOEVER HAS DONE IT, IT HAS NEVER WORKED).

IS Rupert concerned??? Is he foooook.

Mike Wilde - how was the 'gelding' process for you???

Nigel Pearson also mentioned in article in Times today- glowing reference to teh English manager. What person decided we needed a new manager in the Summer?

Supporting Saints is ssooooooooooooo frustrating. SOOOOOOOOOO many mistakes could and should have been avoided!

Your debating style seems to revolve around getting yourself all worked up and blurting out whatever comes to mind first...calm down dear...

I fail to remember Crouch ever coming out and admitting his mistake publicly...not that i would expect him to...

And i'm sorry but if he wasn't panicking after that Cup performance then he bloody well should have been...we were utter utter sh:te that day...what better way to humiliate yourself than on national tv...

Hehehe..

The Rovers game was (as you rightly point out) probably our WORST live TV performance EVER.

As for blurting out, well Scudamore apologies, but the way this club has been for many many years frustrates me greatly.

I just think that at the moment, it's easy to lambast Crouchie - as he is the only one who is outside of Lowe's little shareholding club...believe me, I'm sure there are much much more of his little gelding's mistakes that the Lowe Supporters could have a field day on...

I wonder why none of the Lowe Fans openly criticise Wilde and his Regime...oh look it has all been conveniently forgotten.....in fact I've found Rupey and Gelding's latest SFC photo..

Thank God someone brought it to my attention that some think we should have kept Pearson on at this club, otherwise it may have passed me by.

Personally, if it was my choice I STILL wouldn't have appointed him as I think he is a limited manager.

Well DPS, I would trust your judgement on managers more than Rupert Lowe.

However, we'll never know what Pearson may or may not have achieved over a full season - Rupey Baby saw to that.

All we have now is another Dutch Crispbake who seems attached to scarves for some reason...what's he hiding under there then???!

Agreed. Although I wouldn't have kept Pearson on I also wouldn't have brought in the Dutchmen.

Ironicly Dodd and Gorman had actually won 1, drew 1 and lost 2 from their first 4 games. Which means Wotte is actually doing worse results wise.

The good thing is that Crouch realised he messed up and sorted it before it was too late, he will be the first to tell you he screwed up that appointment. Question is will Lowe do the same if Wotte loses say another 2 games? I doubt it.

Would agree if Pearson at the time could be considered the appointment that was a firm and decisve statemnet for survival - he was an unknown quantity, untried with no first team experience at the time... The fact is it woprked out....just and so we can rightly say it was a good choice, but at the time it was no less a gamble than gray, wigley or even redknapp? It TURNED out to be a good appointmnet but to assume Crouch had some sort of superior forsight in this is just PR ******.

His time here was limited, by the spiteful actions of an egocentric megalomaniac who would only countenance yes men and doing things his way.

Frankly Frank,

Pearson's background with the England Set up at least showed that he was well-thought of within footballing circles, as were his higher profile coaching positions at Newcastle etc.

Now, alternatively if he was an unknown coach from the Blue Square Premier, then that would be a HUGE gamble wouldn't it ??? ;)

Same could be said about Wotte and the dutch U21s? Look, I m not saying Pearson is not good and yup would b more than happy to see him here now, but its a bit rich crediting Crouch with some kind of foresight when the reality is it was also a gamble.... afterall Lawrie Mac was involved a number 2 with England and that was frankly a disaster, Wigley was with the U21s etc... bothh Gray and Wigley were very highly thought of ion coaching circles......Just got be consistent in the judgements thats all...

This is not syaing JP and Wotte are not feck ups, just that Pearson was equally a risk when appointed...

Agreed...what is now different between this year and last year was that we had some HOPE.

Also, that little bit of quality in front of goal.

THAT'S why it seems so hopeless now - McGoldrick can't hit the ar$e end of a banjo and no-one seems bothered enough to notice.

Euell and Saga up front for me...can't be any ******* worse. Yes I know that Euell blared one over the bar at the weekend, but he at least looks like he gives a toss.

I hope that we dont spiral down further like we did last season

When he walked in the door we were 18th. He wasn't really in charge when we slipped lower after immediately losing at Plymouth (down to 20th I think).

At that point we had achieved 38 points from 33 games (1.15 per game and sat 20th I think).

Then when he left we were 20th and managed 16 points from his 13 games (1.23 points per game).

So during his tenure he stabilised a fall and managed to improve on the points per game haul of the previous 33 games.

In the context, a result all round.

no not quite... a mistake in this case was in employing somone who was so directly involved in previous failure, not in appointing the 'risky' candidate - there will always be a high degree of risk involved at the pricepoint we can currently afford.

Won 1 Drew 1 Lost 2 indeed.

The win was against League 2 club Bury however.

Which makes that sound less impressive. If indeed it even sounds vaguely impressive.

I'm not sure how you get that he was Englands Best Young Manager out of those stats.

Maybe better than what went before or after him, but it is one large jump to go from stabilising a falling team and getting 1.23 ppg to calling him England's Best Young Manager.

Methinks you're somewhat overegging his record there;)

It looks brighter when you throw in his record at Leicester, but it would still be one hell of a leap.

I will always cherish the feeling after the SU game.it is one of those games that have been as exciting as winning the cup.Last day V West Ham, last day home to Wimbledon, Dellhurst park etc but i can't still forget how we so nearly from a point of safety nearly got relegated. i do want to go over old ground again re GB but if you took out the G&D period i suggest that his points tally was better. NP got out of jail in the last few minutes of the season i hope Wotte can do the same but just a bit quicker although he has the harder job IMO

I imagine that Burley's record was better than D&G's, but Pearson came in after both of them (and Burley towards the end appeared to had lost it big time) and he had to pick up the pieces.

In fact by confirming D&G's record was worse, then it actually makes the halting of the slide by Pearson all the more impressive.

Not world beating standard, but certainly a good job addressing a very worrying slide.

He did what he had to do.

His job was judged at the end of the season and he had us 20th, a position he inherited, but a position that he inherited after we had slid down the table.

Wotte on the other hand has a different job (and a different context).

He has to arrest the decline and then lead us up the table. The worry for me is not only is that a abig ask, but he was also a part of the problem that got us there in the first place.

Um i wish i knew how to reply in headings like you do, i cant and so....

GB's record against NP would have been better. The fans had lost faith and I agree GB had lost his edge as it was patently clear he could achieve no better as the best were sold.Yes NP did take over a team on the slide BUT the arrest of the slide came very very late after Leicester failed to take advantage of our poor results.NP can be said to have done the job.

Wotte is not my choice but again i can only go by what i am hearing and his actions.Iam assured the players have warmed to him since the day he took over and had a meeting with the staff and they had their opportunity to put their views across. It seemed to go well, whilst the results have not picked up he has done what the majority have asked for and that is to play the Saga's /Rudis etc and also started to play with aggression.

I myself have not been upset with his interviews as basically he is telling it as he sees it and not playing to the audience.

PNE is probably our last chance to salvage anything although we hve 14 games left. I will stay positive as i am not prepared to lay down and accept the relegation for some weeks yet.

Not least because he's not that young - he's 45 and has been in football management for over ten years.

He's the same age as David Moyes who took his first job at Preston around the same time Nige started at Carlisle.

So can people stop with the "hottest prospect" stuff. I like him well enough, but he aint no hot young thing.

'probably last chance' and wont that we will be relegated definetely for a few weeks as you fat lady has not started singing .Would you declare if we were 10points behind and still 30 odd to play for. While you are alive you have to keep trying.

How I miss NP and his passion, he was respected by the players and I have no doubt that he will go on to be one of the top English Premiership Managers, our loss.

They said the same about Stuart Pearce and Paul Ince. Pearson is simply managing a club with resources head and shoulders above anything in that league. The true test will come next season for Big Nige.

Nigel got lucky, the man who really saved was Richard Wright quite literally. Lets give thanks that Davis, Bialkowski and Poke or whoever it was all got injured at the same time as i doubt we would have dug deep for Wright otherwise.

Lets not forget 1 year ago today we were in apparent safety of 18th and with Crouch perhaps no longer believing the play offs were possible unlike 4 weeks earlier. 12 games later we found ourselves where we are today. I would say that's all to play for. COYRs!

He only has the potential IMO to be the most over-rated manager we have ever had.

Mike I know what you are trying to say but by the same token our last game last season winning did not necessarily mean safety. We had 3 points to win and no more games and fortunately those above us slipped up so we stayed up. This Saturday we are 5 points off safety with 3 points to play for and still another 13 games and 39 points after that. Even if it goes really t1ts up on Saturday we will be 8 points from safety and still those 39 points. We are still in control of our own destiny and even if we don't get anything at home to Preston or Cardiff (only lost 4 all season) then its still not desperate with massive but winnable games against Watford, Charlton, Forest, Sheff W, Palace, Derby, Blackpool, QPR all looking a lot easier than our next two and points to be picked up at Ipswich and maybe Burnley at home and writing off the games at Wolves and Birmingham.

What do you think will be the safety cut off this season? I think it will be a little lower than last year as the teams fighting it out are doing better than those down there last year so less points in theory to go around with no obvious banker games. I reckon between 46 and 48 points so stick with the 6 wins and as many draws as we can get. Surely better than relying on just one win and hoping others do you a favour? Not much btter granted but still in our hands - just!

in our hands!! Are you completely mad? We have won 1 game at home all season, just where do you think these 6 wins and as many draws as we can get are going to come from? We have a crap squad, no confidence, a "manager" who is unproven but from what i have seen so far is no better than JP.

I admire your optimism but surely even you can see we are stuffed unless something drastic happens.

Leicester are a league apart in that, erm, league.... They still have a CCC squad, to all intents and purposes.

Stephen Clemence, Matt Oakley, Steve Howard, Matty Fryett, Bruno N'Gotty, Paul Dickov, Chris Powell, -wonder how their wage bill compares to ours?!

Got to be some of the best players for the 3rd tier ever?
