um pahars Posted 28 February, 2009 Share Posted 28 February, 2009 Deffo Size, who once again was immense, but Gillett is not someone I rate. I accept he gets stuck in, but after that think he is fairly limited and he hit a wall on about 70 mins today. I think his enthusiasm and "get stuck in" attitude masks a poor player. All about opinions because, like you, a couple of mates were really praising him, whilst me and another weren't impressed.
Saf... Posted 28 February, 2009 Share Posted 28 February, 2009 Good post. Gillett wasn't as good as he was against Preston but he was still impressive, and Size was class again.

del boy Posted 28 February, 2009 Share Posted 28 February, 2009 Size was awesome, only one mistake all match, which turned out to be OK. Gillet won an awful lot of ball in the middle. Once again Jason up front put in a great effort, but... what about that save from Kelv first half - it was Pele / Banks stuff!!
team-saint Posted 28 February, 2009 Share Posted 28 February, 2009 Gillet was not as good as normal in my opinion But Saeijs was immense, easily the best centre-back performance since Lucketti vs Bristol City last season.
SoccerMom Posted 28 February, 2009 Share Posted 28 February, 2009 Gillett has moments of brilliance, and then just loses it. If he can stay focussed, he can really contribute to the game. I just can't stop thinking that he reminds me of a Jack Russell.

Hopkins Posted 28 February, 2009 Share Posted 28 February, 2009 Both class today. How anyone can slate Gillet is beyond me. A little terrier in midfield and not afraid to take a touch, bring the ball under control and move it on. MOM for me. Whatever the case may be, I think the important thing is that we're now trying to decide to heap the most praise on for our home wins, instead of *****ing at each other about boardroom seesaws. IMHO. georgeismyname Posted 28 February, 2009 Share Posted 28 February, 2009 I thought Perry was immense today. MOTM IMO. He won so many headers for a short bloke and cleared up behind Saeijs in the rare event that he lost out in a header. Awesome. Also well done to Kelvin, Saeijs, Gillett, Lallana and Surman
St Marco Posted 28 February, 2009 Share Posted 28 February, 2009 I really do think Size (can't be arsed to spell Saeijs all the time) has been a massive coup for us. He has had the same impact Davies had last year with Lucketti and Wright. It would be a excellent signing if we could afford him.
Bailey Posted 28 February, 2009 Share Posted 28 February, 2009 Saeijs was first class. Won almost every header and has formed a fantastic partnership with Perry at the back. Gillett was top draw too. He broke the play up superbly and for a little lad, he isn't afraid to get stuck in and put himself about. I haven't always been convinced by Gillett, but in the last few games we've really started to see the best of him.
up and away Posted 28 February, 2009 Share Posted 28 February, 2009 There is absolutely no doubt to me why we are winning games. It is down to the added contributions of Euell in attack, Gillet in midfield and Size in defence. If you scrutinise the individual performances of Euell and Gillet there is a lot you can pick fault with, but without their performances the whole thing falls apart. This is not to overlook many other players who many can say put in better individual performances, but the blend of the team is now such that things are far more effective. One thing that concerns is that some of the younger players seemed to be losing their edge as the game wore on, I just hope the manager takes this into account for the amount of games we have in the near future. I am concerned especially by Gillet disappearing, as he has done previously when he seems to burn himself out in repeated fixtures.

sidthesquid Posted 28 February, 2009 Share Posted 28 February, 2009 I wonder if a young Dennis Wise was lodging with Mrs Gillett 24 years ago.... He doesn't need to do anything clever, he has Surman for that, but having a little terrier in the middle putting his foot in disrupting their play makes such a difference As for Saeijs, he really could be the difference this season for us
IN MY DAY Posted 28 February, 2009 Share Posted 28 February, 2009 Very impressed with Simon Gillett today seemed to run out of legs after about 70min but very impressed. As you say UP it is all about opinions, but I think that you are being harsh on him. The strong positives as far as I am concerned is a) that the ball always seems to come to him - a sign of a player who intuitively knows where to be b) he always seems to have time on the ball even under pressure - to me a sign of a player with good technical ability. Oakley had it. I think he is underrated in this regard c) he is a battler Weakness - still prone to loose passes. Nevertheless in the last two games I felt was at least a challenger for MoM. He was putting in better performances at the beginning of the season then just burnt himself out, I just hope it's not going to happen again. I am a firm believer in sticking with a winning team but thought I saw signs with a few of the players running out of steam. Just hope the manager makes the correct decisions and takes everything into account.
Tom28 Posted 28 February, 2009 Share Posted 28 February, 2009 I literally cant say enough good things about the way Gillett played today. He was outstanding. He has completely proven me wrong - I thought he was hopeless. He was everywhere today, breaking up Cardiff attacks all game long. This 70 minutes, ran out of steam nonsense is rubbish - the game turned into a long ball affair as Cardiff were pushing for the equaliser and sadly that doesn't suit someone who is all of 5ft 6! However, I wouldn't have blamed him if he had have run out of steam, he was all over the pitch today, he was always available to receive the ball when we have possession, he broke up Cardiff attacks, he was composed, everything you want from a centre midfielder. Class act today. And he had to do the running of two players today because the lazy DMG showed up today and didn't fancy breaking into a sweat. Other notables, the back 4, all quality today, and Skacel linking up with Drew cut Cardiff up everytime. Euell and Saga first class centre forward play - held the ball up brilliantly, gave the rest of the side a breather and never stopped working and chasing. Only disappoitments for me today was the lazy DMG turning up, and Lallana not in the game enough, or providing enough width on the right.
NickG Posted 28 February, 2009 Share Posted 28 February, 2009 thought DMG worked very hard today -until just before he came off. Chasing around, sliding tackles -got a standing ovation when he came off -don't think just for a penalty.

I made a point of watching him as much as I could today. He was always behind play, either deep when we were attacking, or too far forward when we were defending. On the ball he is one of our better players, but he rarely makes runs to get into space to receive the ball. I find him frustrating because if he had the work rate of someone like Gillett he would be a seriously good player. I don't want to complain today though, great team display, and DMG got the winning goal so all good.

derry Posted 1 March, 2009 Share Posted 1 March, 2009 The only thing I would criticise Simon Gillett for is sometimes playing 30yd passes without looking when he is pressurized. Once yesterday it got us into real trouble when he passed straight to an opponent.
SuperMikey Posted 1 March, 2009 Share Posted 1 March, 2009 Haven't been down to SMS for a while, but from what i've heard Saeijs has been absolutely immense for us. I think he could be the man that decides whether we stay up or go down. I'm not too sure about Gillett. While he is a very hard worker and certainly gives 110%, he can't keep possession for very long and his passing isn't that great. Aerially he's not great either, but I wouldn't expect a bloke of his size to be able to win headers against some of the huge players in the CCC. If he worked on his passing and learnt to keep a cool head and take his time then he could be a very good player for us I think.

SamKimish Posted 1 March, 2009 Share Posted 1 March, 2009 Saejis reminds me of Lundekvam. Gets stuck in, clears any danger and doesn't p**s about with the ball. Just sticks to the simple game. Similar build/looks aswell ... kind of

You should have seen some of the headers he DID win - I couldn't believe such a small feller could jump so high. Didn't really notice a lot of his passes going astray. Thought the whole team did well - I haven't been convinced by Lallana in the past but thought he played well too. McG has found his position in think. Showed a lot of bottle to claim the penalty. He's actually a very skilful player and links the play well.
