trousers Posted 11 March, 2009 Share Posted 11 March, 2009 that the pitch had been narrowed, I didnt but was told it had, anyone know if this is correct. Before or after our recent two home wins?
ladysaint Posted 11 March, 2009 Author Share Posted 11 March, 2009 Was only noticed last night but not sure if this is correct so just trying to find out really.
Scummer Posted 11 March, 2009 Share Posted 11 March, 2009 Didn't look like it had been on the Itchen side. The line where the lino runs was pretty pronounced, it had clearly been run on lots of other times.

Scummer Posted 11 March, 2009 Share Posted 11 March, 2009 One thing I did notice was that it looked like they had taken up a long strip of turf along that side, in the other half to which the linesman stands. I thought maybe they'd used it to patch the goalmouths or something.

Saint_clark Posted 11 March, 2009 Share Posted 11 March, 2009 Wouldn't surprise me, we play without wingers so naturally we will want to try and bring opposition wingers further infield.
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 11 March, 2009 Share Posted 11 March, 2009 It would make sense to narrow the pitch, if we're going to continue to play with a diamond in midfield rather than wingers. It would also mean less space for opposing wingers to get behind our full-backs, especially as James was positionally suspect a bit earlier this season. Pennyred Posted 11 March, 2009 Share Posted 11 March, 2009 And another thing I noticed (for the first time) last night - how long has there been a box up behind the 'Lowe and his brown-nosed cronies' area called LEON AND LAWRIE ? Crammed full of chaps but couldn't see Leon or Lawrie.

Pennyred Posted 11 March, 2009 Share Posted 11 March, 2009 Thanks Scummer- since we gave up our ST's (TRAGEDY - OAP GIVES UP SEASON TICKET AFTER 40 YEARS) we've been working our way round the ground trying different areas - last night in Itchen for the first time. What's becoming really noticeable is the 'waste' of effort by the vociferous supporters around the ground. The Northam and those in block five can be heard around the ground, but the efforts of those small enthusiastic pockets joining in in small groups in Chapel and Kingsland are wasted cos they're 'out of sync'. Now that the crowds are so low isn't it a good opportunity to 'create' a new home end 'or side'? The cameras show an abysmal scene of empty seats and away fans when showing the Northam stand behind the goal. Chapel goal view is just as pathetic. Which other ground gives the away fans such a prominent camera position? They should be tucked away in a cold draughty corner, with us home fans taking over the whole Northam. Encouragement of a little more 'home spirit' should be high on 'someone's' priority list, no?
SaintRobbie Posted 11 March, 2009 Share Posted 11 March, 2009 Perhaps it was narrowed to make the HOOFING easier?

TheSaint75 Posted 11 March, 2009 Share Posted 11 March, 2009 Our players seemed to be slipping a lot last night, nothing to do with the width just an observation, shouldn't our players be used to the surface more than the opposition who didn't slip nearly as much? ART Posted 11 March, 2009 Share Posted 11 March, 2009 A recent article about Rory Delap mentioned that part of their home success came from a decision to narrow the pitch. He may not be playing but maybe Anthony Pullis is doing something useful afterall. We'd better keep an eye on the goal posts from now on. We are desperate and lawd knows what else they're going to try next.

They should be tucked away in a cold draughty corner, with us home fans taking over the whole Northam. We only have one corner unless you include the away fans bit which ****** lowe left untouched. Great idea though, switch Itchen north to northam. I would be up for it, seriously. Easy segregation and policing of away fans comings and goings. Put an end to all the annoying "No acccess to the ar park announcement too. Any negatives?
ladysaint Posted 11 March, 2009 Author Share Posted 11 March, 2009 I think the reason why they are where they are now is because the Northam Stand is the only stand that can be separated in the concourse and dont think this can happen in any other stand unfortunately. Let them have half the Itchen for now, when we get back in the Prem we'll have it back. It would be awesome to hear the whole Northam in unison. John Boy Saint Posted 12 March, 2009 Share Posted 12 March, 2009 The pitch was narrowed a couple or 3 seasons ago on the kingsland side. If you look at where the lino runs towards Team Saints corner in certain lights you can see a darker strip where the old lino wear line has grown back. Hood down Anorak off. brightspark Posted 12 March, 2009 Share Posted 12 March, 2009 as someone who is refereeing in Australia I know that some clubs narrow the pitch some part during the season due to the line the linesman runs wearing down the pitch, creating a "gully" like the edge of a ten pin bowling lane for the ball to roll down, so not going out. Linesmen aren't meant to run on the line but behind it, although a lot of linesmen will still do it as this is what was taught until a few years ago. hughieslastminutegoal Posted 12 March, 2009 Share Posted 12 March, 2009 thats the side that someone noticed that it had been apparently. Are we that hard up we can't afford the groundstaff to narrow BOTH sides, now? Or was it because we only play with one winger?
rallyboy Posted 12 March, 2009 Share Posted 12 March, 2009 Let's get a roller on it, and I don't mean one of the reserve team players' motors. The ball bobbled all over the show the other night and when you have a couple of players who can't trap a bag of cement, you don't need to make life more difficult. lordswoodsaints Posted 12 March, 2009 Share Posted 12 March, 2009 this used to be common practice at the dell years ago, when away teams came to play us and they had a nippy winger the ground staff were instructed to reduce the width............im not sure if this is the case now but if they have been doing it for the last 3 or 4 home games then i would say that it is working in our favour. now only if our groundstaff could narrow our goal for the last 10mins of every home game....:-)
