trousers Posted 24 March, 2009 Share Posted 24 March, 2009 http://www.nottscountyfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10426~1600532,00.html John Armstrong-Holmes moved today to again dismiss rumours that Notts County are in serious financial difficulty. The Magpies' chairman said he is "totally fed up" with having to react to comments and innuendo that is having such an unsettling affect at Meadow Lane. He said: "Our vice-chairman Roy Parker issued a statement last week which made it plain to supporters that there's no truth in the rumours that we are on the brink of going back into Administration but it seems some people just don't want to listen to the facts. "I have already explained that we are having the same sort of problems as virtually every other business - and football club - in this country. "For example, Southampton owe us a six-figure sum as one of the David McGoldrick transfer payments that should have been paid last month. Hopefully, we will be receiving that money in April. alpine_saint Posted 24 March, 2009 Share Posted 24 March, 2009 If this is true, this is big (but bad) news. How can we still owe them £400,000 for a player we took to our academy 4 years ago? Surely we didn't buy him for that much in the first place did we? An unknown 16/17 year old from Notts County? Or was a fee based on future first team performances? If it's based on goals scored we're paying about £40,000 per goal and even on appearances it's about £10k a game!? labibs Posted 25 March, 2009 Share Posted 25 March, 2009 I'd be surprised if we owed anywhere near that. Nearly half a million on a 17 yr old kid from Notts County? Saint_clark Posted 25 March, 2009 Share Posted 25 March, 2009 Why does it not add up? We were a Prem club when we signed him, and no doubt this payment is to do with the number of first team appearances he's made. It would have been difficult for him to make as many appearances as he has already in the Prem, so we would of been happy to offer such a large sum. Window Cleaner Posted 25 March, 2009 Share Posted 25 March, 2009 Now I seem to remember(from the above) that McGoldrick came here in the summer of 2004, ie when he was 16. Would he have been able to sign a pro-contract with County at that age? There would be no theoretical entitelment to a fee if he didn't have a contract with them, we may have done "the right thing" by them and given them something (albeit over time) like Arsenal did with us for Walcott. But that we owe them 400K still for a league 2 unknown 16 year old is absolutely laughable, we wouldn't have promised them a quarter of that. Methinks the Notts Co chairman's nose probably got a bit longer after he said that.

Subject to a medical, the 16 year old front man will sign for Saints as a first year scholar tomorrow. McGoldrick made his first team debut for County last season in a 2-1 defeat against Swindon but after rejecting a scholarship with the Magpies his services were coveted by several Premiership clubs. The teenage forward had trials with Blackburn, Fulham and Everton during pre-season but despite interest from all those clubs McGoldrick chose to link up with former strike partner Leon Best on the south coast. Saints will have to pay the Nottinghamshire outfit compensation for the training and education he received while he was at County with a fee to be decided between the two clubs. Academy manager Huw Jennings commented: "We are delighted to be signing a young player with a lot of potential. "David is a striker who can play with his back to goal and links the play well. He is a natural second striker and could provide an excellent partner for the likes of Nathan Dyer in our youth teams."
