Just got back. Poor 2nd half and poor substitutions. Ings was stretching and holding his leg all of the 2nd half yet he takes Long off. Long was ideal for stretching the game at that point and running up top. Hughes is under pressure in my opinion. The atmosphere at St Mary’s is woeful. It’s toxic. We don’t sing, cheer the team or encourage. When it went 2-1, the stadium should have been on its feet, singing our hearts out encouraging the players. Instead everyone was moaning and groaning and it doesn’t help. Granted we don’t have much to cheer about but it helped back in Benali and Le Tissiers day.

Great performance. Everyone played well, yes even Hoedt, PEH man of the match by a mile. Long was fantastic today, he does so much for the team and with a goalscorer in Ings next to him I think it works well. No clue why davis was on the bench in place of Armstrong? No Gabbi again! Bizarre as Gabbi has more to him than Austin now, he’s a liability. Awful pen that was lucky not to have cost us and he can’t run.

I genuinely have no idea what austin brings to the table anymore. Lemina and Redmond were superb today, Berty played well. Hojbjerg was having a good game but had now put himself back a few spaces with that embarrassing dive. I like Long. Works his nuts off, Ings was just off it a tad today. 2 wins in 11 for old Sparky - he needs to find his best XI and stick with it. It’s already becoming worrying and we’ve played 3 games. Charlie Austin is doing a great impression of Micky Evans....Austin is done. Should no longer be first choice striker. Missed Vesty today, had he played in sure it would have been different. I take positives from the 2nd half and that we came out fighting. We had chances, Ings was bright. Need more from Romeu, Redmond, Lemina. JWP can’t get into the team purely for dead ball situations. Not fussing about the injury time added, it’s the freekick taken in utterly the wrong place. It was never a foul by redders and the freekick was taken at least 15yards out of position. I have thought about JWP as a right wing back, obviously not the quickest but can cross a ball. If we can just get the win tomorrow....I know it’s not really the same but I manage my youngest sons U7’s team and we lost the first 8 games of the season and it was hard but we managed to sneak a win in the 9th game and we went on a run and won the next 7 games. The point is belief and moment does happen. If only Le God was playing Come on you reds!!

I feel sick to my stomach about this game. We can do this, Everton were rubbish last night and one win might just galvanise us....or am I clutching at straws? Time to give it everything, it’s better to burn out than to fade away. I can’t let that go. Being in a hugely similar field to the quite excellent ground staff at St Mary’s, they have battled with the worst winter weather since 2003. Record rainfall, 3 rounds of snow and many frosts. They have to produce spectacular surfaces in the worst conditions and are doing a fantastic job. It’s not just home games, the players train there as well. I can’t be sure of the exact rainfall figures for Southampton but my own figures where I am showed 137mm of rain for March compared to that of 42mm in March of last year. April of last year saw 4.5mm of rain and April of this year has given us 67mm in 15 days. Being a groundsman is not an exact science. They can not control the weather. ‘Remarkably poor condition since November’ which coincides with the awful winter, rainfall and drop in temperatures. More understanding of their job would be good before making a slanderous comment like that.

Hughes has said he has learnt what players he can use in this situation. For me, Long, Yoshida, JWP have to start. They will give 110%. Sack off Cedric, Lemina (he has been at fault for goals today and against Newcastle) Hoedt and Gabbi looks shot. Good player but Pelligrino has ruined him. What I’d give for JayRod now.
