Saints external profile - Shifting Perceptions?
Miltonaggro replied to Miltonaggro's topic in The Saints
Try typing it into Google - the first four pages are mostly from the past three years. Since the window opened there is a lot of use of Ambitious Southampton by the national media, mostly positive but some obviously tongue in cheek... -
Having followed the last few weeks of VW transfer gossip it seems that Saints have finally shaken off the perpetual media moniker 'Struggling Southampton' (which has been used since the early 90s), to be replaced by 'Ambitious Southampton' - long may this continue!

Been thinking this over, and McMenemy had a cracking track record in getting value from big money and bargain basement signings. The only big money 'flop' that springs to mind is probably Charlie George (who still managed a goal every four games as an attacking midfielder), but that was mainly due to a horrendous run of injuries. You could argue that he always paid big money for proven 'thoroughbreds' but they always seemed to hold form or indeed improve at Saints, Shilton a case in point here. As for the bargain basements, starting at left back - how about 27 year old Ivan Golac from Partizan Belgrade for £50,000, or his replacement the 22 year old Mark Dennis for £30,000. What price now!...

Keegan cost Saints £400,000 from Hamburg in 1980, Armstrong £600,000 from Boro a year later...
-
The best in my time has to be Dave Armstrong - £600,000 and our club record, when the world record was £1000,000 and a brilliant player for us. If VW comes close to Armstrong's ability he will be a quality signing...

It's just like 1991 all over again...

I seem to remember Dowie's first game (certainly the first game I saw him in) was a friendly against Gothenburg in which David Hughes also made his debut. Hughes looked amazing, best player on the park, and there was much excitement about him being the next great youngster. Dowie on the other hand looked a nightmare, at one point doing a 'tyro league' when trying to trap a dropping ball it bounced and he nutmegged himself! I used to often see him with Adams and Hurlock in Simons Wine Bar, and Dowie was a pleasant bloke off the park, honest and 100% on the park but never a top flight player. Anyone remember the 'header' at Man C away when a clearance hit him on the back of the head and looped over the keeper. Priceless!... -
Got to get him over this week while to sun is shining, he'll think Southampton is the British version of St Tropez!...
-
My favourite bit is when they take corners and goal kicks...

Banega, right box of tricks, potential match winner on his own...

If these quality players come in (along with some possible frees, Boruc style bargains etc.) we have got to be looking at top ten, if not breaking top eight. Would love a cup win and would take League cup in a heartbeat as success builds momentum...

When Kevin Keegan joined Saints he was 28 (a few days off 29), so the same age as Ronaldo or Rooney, two years older than Messi. He was the current England Captain, European footballer of the year, and was expected to go from Hamburg to Man United or Real Madrid. Furthermore, he was the nearest thing to Beckham in the 70's in terms of marketing, media profile and advertising, a world star. When McMenemy signed him it was simply incredible, he was in his peak and had just had a fantastic season at Hamburg. So by comparison, what price Ronaldo or Messi to Saints now?...

Porno midget. Would look good on the back of one of the new shirts!...

More capacity at St Marys or new ground?

Now Portsmuff don't exist, it has to be Fareham... -
F*ck me...
-
Ditto. The Glovers can be the new Bournemouth ;-)

It's a Sunday league kit you can buy for a tenner a shirt. If this is our home kit it would appear that merchandising is the one area where Cortese needs to get a grip, employ a director of taste, perhaps...
-
Monday then, or perhaps tomorrow to f*ck up the Echo ;-)
-
Make sure that you mention Hooper off to the mighty Hull as well, for balance LMFAO...
-
This would appear a cast iron upgrade! Come on Cortese, Weed the Reed!...
-
Spot on!

No, it's not a representation. Most rank and file that have heard of it see this site as prawn sandwich. How rude...

Fuc*ing terrifying!...
