Its hard to see him being a Pochettino type player. On his day he is a superb player, but if anything his lack of work rate is the complete opposite of what you'd expect Pochettino to be looking to sign. Not the same logic at all, it will take a lot more than one team having an upturn in form to overtake Saints and relegate them. There are a lot of teams below Saints and only 16 games left they simply won't all be able to catch Saints if we had a huge collapse. Anyone who thinks it'll take 40 points is daft. It'll be in the low to mid 30's, where Saints already are with 16 games left.

If Hodgson is currently planing for... 3 keepers 2 right backs 2 left backs 4 centre backs 8 midfielders 4 strikers Why would an injury to one of those 2 right backs makes mean he changes to... 3 keepers 1 right backs 2 left backs 4 centre backs 8 or 9 midfielders 4 or 5 strikers ? What make far more sense to do a straight swap of right back out/right back in rather than change the whole make up of the squad. Smalling and Jone will go regardless of Johnson being fit or not, as we need 4 centre backs.

You are the one that thinks we need 40 points to stay up. Are you unaware the bottom three have 18 points from 22 games? They would need 22 points from the remaining 16 games to force Saints to need 40 points. Plus the teams above would also need an upturn in form.
