Cortese kisses and makes up with the Sun
Matthew Le God replied to Golac's Iron Gonads's topic in The Saints
They still achieved 4th place in 2005 on a much smaller budget than a number of other clubs and average crowds of just 36,834. -

Because Lowe didn't have the resources behind him to back up any ambition, Cortese does. -

So you are happy for MLT and LM to go to the press but not Cortese? Why do you think Cortese hasn't done much for the club? He has helped put the things in place for Saints to climb from 68th to 21st in England in a little over two years, developing the training ground, spending on players and saved it from financial ruin by bringing Liebherr to the table in the summer of 2009. -
It is on Soccer Saturday on SSN. Will be on soon after the programme starts at 12.

Okay what would you like to say? I still think that final paragraph is very relevant as it highlights what he has already achieved and isn't just empty promises, thus any future ambitions do have a lot more substance to them than for example from numerous Pompey owners in recent history. -

I'll ask again, how does that not count as "ambition"? "See it", see what exactly? It is ambition, do you not know what that means? Have you noticed Cortese has led Southampton from 68th in England to 21st in England in little over 2 years? Have you noticed the training ground granted planning permission that wouldn't look out of place at a top Premier League club? Are these not signs of intent backed with resources? This interview shows his ambitions for what he wants to happen next. -

This interview has taken place nearly 5 months after the event. That is quite some pre-planning you are accusing him of! -

How is the excerpt I quoted not ambition? It is an ambition of Cortese's until it happens. -

Now this is ambition... "I don't just expect to be promoted this year, I want us to be champions. When we are promoted to the Premier League I don't want people to think of us as immediate candidates for relegation. I see Southampton as a top-six Premier League club. Would I pay a player £100,000 or even £200,000 a week? Not if we were in the Premier League with a 32,000 capacity stadium. But if we were in the Champions League and had re-developed the ground to 50,000 then I might consider it." -
A topic we agree on!

It is already in football. Ref assistants have a button on their flags connected to a device that alerts the ref and they also all have microphones down to League Two level. Well that is nonsense. If for example a murderer was let off because we refused to use DNA evidence technology in the British legal system, would that make the legal system "great"? Just because something is controversial it doesn't mean it is a good thing. Also to say "they balance out" is also a nonsense, there is no reason why it would.

With 18 points already earnt, do you still think Saints will come 17th in the Championship as you predicted? - In 2010/11 Barnsley came 17th with 56 points from 46 games. - In 2011/12 Saints have 18 points from 7 games. In order to Saints to only achieve 56 points, that would see something like this from the remaining 39 league games... Played 39 Win 8 Draw 14 Lose 17 I'd love to know where all those defeats are going to come from! This league really isn't that great.

If I have got this right, a Saints fan living in Portsmouth will have to... - Leave Portsmouth early on Saturday, drive to Southampton and park - Then get on a Saints fans coach to Portsmouth in order to get his ticket - Watch the game - Then leave Portsmouth on a coach back to Southampton - Drive back from Southampton to Portsmouth

Pirated still perhaps, but will be much harder for them to do so. It is hardly much of a hoop to jump through for genuine customers and offers a number of other benefits to them. There are more than 4 people playing pirated copies of FM for every legitimate customer, which highlights how bad the problem is. You can't blame publishers and developers for at least trying to protect themselves. Of course not all of those that steal FM would ever by a legitimate copy if they could no longer get a pirated version, but only a small % of them changing their ways and acting legally would increase development budgets and help make a better product. -

Birmingham won the League Cup last season, Championship Ipswich made the semi finals, little reason why Saints can't do well. I want Saints to win. Best chance of a win is... Aldershot at St Mary's

Everyone is required to activate the game with Steam this year. But after activation you don't need to be online and can play the game with Steam in offline mode. It also means you don't need the DVD in your drive and won't have that problem on your Macbook. Plus the game will automatically update with patches and data updates. -
Ben Reeves didn't play upfront last night. He started the game as the central player of a 3 in a 4231 system and later on in the match moved out wide when Lallana and Lambert came on.

He really isn't needed. He wouldn't make the five man bench for most (if not all) of the season. Connolly, Barnard and Guly Do Prado are all better options that the club already has to partner Lambert. Lallana and De Ridder can also be used upfront if required.
