  1. yep, me too. Was saying at work only the other day that however good MLT's goals were (and they were good) nothing for me beat seeing Horne smash that goal from 40 yards out deep into injury time to save us from going out of the cup.
  2. Only ever bet small amounts so it doesn't stand up to previous posts and I stick with boxing mostly "stick to what you know". Best: Calzaghe 1st round knockout of an east european guy (forget his name) at 28/1. Hasim Rachman beating Lennox at 10/1 Barrera beating Hamed at 8/1 (now that was easy money - anyone who'd seen Barrera fight Morales could see how that one would play out). Worst: Just about anything I put on the National.
  3. People who confuse things they don't like with things they don't understand.
  4. When Clarkson first popped up on the old style Top Gear I thought he was quite funny but since then he's proving to be a bit of one trick pantomime horse. Can't doubt his popularity though.
  5. '74 mini clubman bought in 1989. Smashing little car and I loved it. I would have liked a mini cooper but that was all I could afford. Wouldn't mind a mini again though I'd prefer one of the older ones.
  6. Probably a combination of having a team that just wasn't good enough (there's only so much a manager can do) and a style of play that was easy to figure out in the premiership. Let's face it, Watford were always odds on to go down so to totally blame the manager is a bit unfair. Anyway, I'm not too interested in how he'd fair as our manager in the premiership - it's getting out of league 1 that's more important right now and IMO he'd be a good shout.
  7. I'd agree with this. The movie studios are there to make money and everything else is subsidiary to that. It's a shame but that's the way it is. Having said that it would be interesting to see a distributer spending half the budget that a remake would cost on marketing the original and see if that was more cost effective. I feel sorry for Americans who have been labelled too thick to follow a subtitled film (or a film not based in the US, with US actors) before they get much of a chance.
  8. I think you're both ready for "Harry and the dinosaurs" now.
  9. Well you can only go on what you've seen but it seems like Boothroyd is a decent manager and doesn't need a lot of money. He seems to be able to motivate a team as well which is nice. The football maybe a bit direct but whenever Watford played us they scored goals and frankly at the moment I'd take less tippy tappy football and a few more goals f'sure. As an outsider it did seem as if Boothroyd was a victim of his own success - getting Watford promoted on a shoe string and then being blamed when a very poor side inevitably struggled in the premiership.
  10. Well I've had a think and can't really narrow it down to just one so instead I'll list a few. Lord of the Rings - I loved this as a teenager, it was the first book I cared about, and must have read it about 4 or 5 times. Tried to read it after a gap of 15 years or so when the first film came out and just couldn't get on with it at all. It just seemed really dense and impentetreble but I'll include it as at the time I just couldn't put it down. One flew over the cuckoo's nest - Just brilliant and even if you've seen the film first it doesn't matter. The characters (particularly the Chief and Harding) are much better in the book and the ending is more uplifting. Wild Swans - Fantastic account of three generations of chinese women. Sophie's world - great introduction to western philosophy and although it might be a bit simplistic it really made me want to explore further. The Stand - I like this one better than any other King book. Good fun if you like post apocalyptic nightmares. Day of the Triffids - John Wyndham books are really easy to read and if I'm not in the mood to concentrate much then this is the ideal kind of book to pick up. It's even better if you've seen the BBC TV series before. Harry and the Dinosaurs - Pretty much sums up the human condition and poses all the big questions. It does require a lot of effort on the part of the reader and shouldn't be approached lightly. I think most readers will see it on a par with Ulysses but believe me if you get to the end then it's really worth it.
  11. Great choice and it would have been mine as well. Grapes of wrath maybe in that list? Definitely fits in. Yes, Ragged Trousered Philanthropists is superb. Have you tried Emile Zola's "Germinal"? It's pretty much the French version and excellent. Mind you it is about 700 pages of sheer unremitting poverty and struggle during a french miner's strike but as a story it's gripping. I'll post my revised recommendation when I've had a proper think about it.

  13. Well as it's an Eastleigh testimonial for an Eastleigh player/coach who happened to start his career at Saints so I think it's only right that Eastleigh fans judge whether it's right for him to have a testimonial. Certainly he doesn't deserve a saints one but no one is saying he does. Whether he deserves one at all? The fans will decide that. I guess he didn't earn a hell of a lot in his short lived career so it's not like he'll never have to work again but the money he earns will make life easier. Ultimately it's up to the people who choose to go. I'm not an Eastleigh fan so it's not for me to judge but I'm guessing even a full house won't earn him that much. I hope he has a good day though.
  14. Churches should pay. I think the chaplains do a good job and provide a decent service but it's not something the state should pay for. As an aside if this was in America wouldn't the state be trying to hand over running the hospitals to the churches? They do that with prisons and other state services.
  15. Maybe...I was on Match of the Day a few times. Does that count?
  16. Jeez you were 82 ish back then.....that makes you about 109 now! Well done on getting the hang of the interweb! I respect the elderly and a lot have views like yours and even if privately I disagree then I'll just be quiet. I think people should lay off you mate - you probably fought the bosch and this is the thanks you get? Only in this country eh?
  17. Sadly this is true. Go Tories, Facists rock! Don't forget to buy my book, "How the Daily Mail taught me to stick my head in the sand at the smallest sign of an argument and resort to shouting slogans"
  18. I'm not really defending Jacqui Smith or her husband but as I understand it her internet connection was being paid for because she needed for it work. That's not particularly unusual. The mistake occurred because her TV deal was packaged with the internet connection. It was a mistake and it is embarassing for her but it's £30 quid. More embarassing is that MP who employed his sons to do non-existant work. For the life of me I can't remember what side of the house he was on but that's the kind of thing that should be highlighted. It's also individual error and I guess both major parties are equally guilty of having MPs who abuse the system. In answer to Stanley though - yes, it is kind of funny but then so is googling teresa may with safe search turned off.
  19. I'm not so sure the tories will but you never know. I'll be willing to bet that labour and the tories fight the next election with identical manifestos that concentrate on improving services, reducing taxes and making rabbits appear from hats. Whoever gets in will pander to focus groups and concentrate on the job in hand which incidentally is not running the country but making sure they win the next election.
  20. It was Jacqui Smith's husband, it was a mistake, it's been (or is being paid) back. It's hardly cash for questions is it?
  21. To be fair that's the ethos of every mainstream political party - they just argue over how much money and who they take it from. If you're going to call new labour communist then you could just as easily refer to the conservative party as facists. Of course they're not but in a just as tenous link as yours you could argue that they lean that way due their last election campaign focusing on immigration. Obviously it's a laughable suggestion that the conservatives are facists but so is the idea that new labour (or even old labour) are communists.
  22. Why do people assume that being rich and having socialist leanings are mutually exclusive? If you've made a bit but believe in a society where the rich pay more so that the gap in inequality is narrower then why does that make you a hypocrite? You'd be arguing that everyone who earns over a certain amount should pay more - it doesn't mean just individuals who feel so inclined. I don't want to get involved in a debate over whether socialism is a good idea or not - that's irrelevant. Just interested to see why anyone who is rich and a lefty is branded a hypocrite.
  23. In what way has it been 10 years of socialism? Has there been any plans for nationalisation? (forget the banks that was forced by the collapse of the free market and is temporary), has equality of outcome replace equality of opportunity? In what way since 1997 have we had socialism? You can argue poor government if you like but one thing it isn't is socialism.
  24. Well OK with the dividend part but just taking on debt without guarantee? If we (the taxpayer) are underwriting this debt then isn't it fair we get something back? Can you imagine the fall out if it failed? It's a good idea that we take on the debt but you seem to be suggesting we just take their debt. Apologies if I've got that wrong. A lot of people bashing Brown at the moment have said that bailing out the banks has achieved nothing - I can't see the public going with a plan to give them more with nothing in return.
