Lallana's future is in the centre of midfield imo, we should build the team around him. Not just stick him wherever we have an injury to cover.
-
You can't deny that over the last couple of months Pardew has played far more cautious sides.
-
The formation isn't the problem it's the player selection and how those players are told to play. Recently when we've played 4-5-1 our midfielders have all played too deep, when we played 4-5-1 against Southend and Oldham we where at our best because Schneiderlin was pushed right up near Lambert we need a central midfielder to do that again, wether it's 4-5-1 or 4-4-2 we need the midfielders getting into the box again.
-
It really isn't that different to how we play at the moment, Hammond doesn't get stuck in half as much as people think, infact i'd say Schneiderlin does far more of the dirty work.
-
That's how we should be playing if we're serious about getting out of the league. Just won't happen with Pardew, he's obviously more inclined to play a more cautious team.

Even after he first signed he never really got into the box, he's basically Simon Gillett but about a foot taller, just like Scheniderlin there isn't a goal threat from open play. -
I'm not against Holmes getting a chance, if we play him on the left with Antonio or Waigo on the right and Lallana alongside Hammond or Schneiderlin in the middle then i'd be happy. I just don't think we should be going to teams and playing for a point with such a negative midfield selection. It was clear as day after Wotton came on that we'd struggle to score from open play.

The last thing we need is to make our midfield even more defensive. We are supposed to be one of the best teams in the league and yesterday after Hammond went off we had the most defensive midfield out possible, it was ridiculous. -
I think James will have a place in the squad for a while, everyone needs a versatile player and he fills that for us. Holmes just isn't good enough, let Lallana play there or sign someone better in. Like you say Lallana went through a spell on looking dangerous and getting back to help Harding, he doesn't look anywhere near as effective upfront. Needs to be in midfield somewhere.

If we sign another midfielder it has to be a ten goal a season midfielder who wants to get into the box at every possible chance. We need a player in the Lampard / Gerrard mould to compliment Schneiderlin. I thought Hammond was that player but he seems to be spending far more time in our own half and doesn't ever seem to arrive late in the box. -
For me Holmes is just James with a left foot and a couple of dodgy knees. We should just go back to what worked so well with Lallana on the left or sign a left winger which would be my next priority if I was manager.

Can we be truly successful with Morgan AND Lallana
Andy_Porter replied to Thedelldays's topic in The Saints
That's not what I said. I said I wouldn't swap Schneiderlin for anyone but Hoolahan. More potential in Schneiderlin than anyone i've seen in a Saints shirt for a long time. I think people forget he's still a teenager. James can play right wing and would have been fine if we had Waigo or Antonio on the pitch somewhere to give us a bit of pace. Two slow wide men didn't work. I like James as a footballer and think he'll come good for us but having him play right wing is just negative imo. Agree about Antonio playing better through the middle, on the other hand Lallana looks far better in midfield. We miss him when he plays as a striker, would have been nice if he dropped deep to get the ball more often then he could really hurt teams. I think it's unfair to say Antonio only looked good because the team was tiring, if Waigo had started and spent 70 minutes attacking their full back and then Antonio was brought in he'd be even more effective. -
I really don't see the difference between James and Holmes apart from playing on different sides neither of them really offer anything as wingers. I much prefer James playing rightback or in the middle, neither of them should be playing out wide while Lallana, Waigo and Antonio are around. Playing them both is just far too negative. Behave. He was crap, didn't create anything of note all game. He put in a decent shift but at any level of football you need more than that from a winger, I can spend 90 minutes running around following a winger, anyone can. We need players outwide with pace, power and confidence to take on a man - James and Holmes haven't got any of those things.

We had plenty of pace on the bench - you could see the impact Antonio made in the short time he was on the pitch. Waigo and Antonio aren't the most elegant footballers but at least one of them has to start every game. I would have played Both of them instead of Holmes and James with Waigo upfront and Antonio wide right. Hopefully Millwall will be the last time James and Holmes play together. -
Agreed, Pardew just setup the team wrong. Lallana should have played wide left, Wiago on the right, James in the middle and Holmes back on the bench, easy to say in hindsight I suppose.
-
What did he do that was so much better than Lloyd James? Even if you look past hios mistake that cost us the win, he didn't really do much to form an opinion either way.

Can we be truly successful with Morgan AND Lallana
Andy_Porter replied to Thedelldays's topic in The Saints
I don't think the players are to blame for the draw yesterday, we set out for a draw and that's what we got. We can't afford to put out a team with no pace, playing one of James and Holmes with Waigo would have been fine, to play them both together is criminal. -
We just need a midfielder who actually wants to get into the box. I don't see the point in playing Holmes, Hammond, Schneiderlin and James together in midfield - where are the goals coming from? We should just go back to what worked so well before Christmas Waigo/Antonio and Lallana outwide with Schneiderlin and Hammond in the middle.

Anyone who thinks Schneiderlin or Lallana are to blame needs to give their head a wobble. The only midfielder in this league who I'd swap either of those for is Hoolahan at Norwich. Why single out Schneiderlin as a luxury player? He's head and shoulders above James, Hammond and Wotton as our other midfield options. -
When Hammond got injured we should have brought on Waigo and moved James inside. It was clear for everyone in the ground we wheren't going to score from open play, really annoying to make such a negative change - drawing yesterday killed our play off chances.
-
We can't afford to play Holmes and James as our wingers again, there's no pace in the side at all with those two. I'd much rather player Waigo and one of the two, probably James and Waigo since we can rely on James staying fit for more than five minutes. There's no way he was our best player, our midfield offered nothing yesterday and he was as much to blame as anyone.

Would you sign Papa Waigo N'Diaye on a permanent basis?

Anfield chiefs were so sure of thrashing Reading, they sent the email to Kop season-ticket holders at 5pm on Wednesday, two hours before the third-round match had even begun. However, three hours later Reading beat Liverpool 2-1 and went through to face Burnley. Liverpool fans were understandably angry. One supporter, Martin Jones, told The Sun: "I didn't read it until after the game. "When I got on the computer and opened it up I couldn't believe my eyes. "It was bad enough to crash out of the cup but then for the club to try and sell me tickets for the next round was like a slap in the face."

Been saying this for so long it's spot on imo. Fonte is exactly the type of player i'd have bought in as a priority this window.
