They are laws, not rules. Many referees will expect the attacker to make at least some attempt to avoid a challenge or else he cannot be considered to have been tripped. Many attackers have to deviate their course to avoid a defender, it happens all the time in football. You certainly could not describe that as a 'trip or attempt to trip'. I don't know which pundits you are referring to but on MOTD they all agreed that the official referee, who is far more experienced than either of us, got the decision spot on.
Did I remember that you were a referee yourself? If you were to give penalties for that sort of thing there would be half a dozen every game.
