Confirmed: Caulker loan cancelled; Moves on loan to Liverpool
Dangermouth replied to Maggie May's topic in The Saints
Yes! There is a God! -
Interesting you say that. I think Seager isn't especially fast nor can he really hold it up well. Apart from that I agree with you and do have to say the standard is far short of what would be required in a PL game hence I tend to agree with Koeman.
-
An inswinging corner creative? I must re-read my dictionary. To me it's a bog-standard set-peice that will almost certainly be properly defended. If JWP had the imagination to try to go for the far post and get it in direct from the corner I might agree there's some creativity there but it's plain that he's not creative-minded. The only younger players who do seem to have that are (to varying degrees) Seager, Hesketh, Stephens, Sims, Barnes (when he was fit; he looks to have a bit of something about him), Wood. I can't comment on the likes of Little, I've not seen him enough. I would have put either Reed in and had the midfield try to push higher up the field to keep the pressure on or brought on Seager, but probably for Mane if Juanmi was already on. Now I do think that Seager will turn out to be another Billy Sharp but with differences (knows where the goal is, not quick/strong enough for the top flight, better on the ball and more intelligent than Sharp but not quite the instinctive finisher that Sharp is) but trying him out isn't going to hurt when the alternative is the perpetually-anonymous JWP. You'll all know the definition of insanity by, I think, Einstein. That's what playing JWP, the same tactics, etc feels like. I do wonder if Seager mightn't do ok in a little and large partnership with Pelle and Mane/Tadic roaming behind. Possibly both and then just leave Romeu and Clasie shielding the defence.
-
Then I agree with you that Seager should have been given a chance. I don't especially rate him, but he is a goalscorer. As to your question to Guan on the other thread, I think the answer is that the preferred formation is 4-3-3 as has always been the case.

I think he's a good player but if he can't regularly both stop being so lightweight in tackles when needed and last 90 minutes regularly I'd get rid of him. I agree that you should not have your substitutions restricted because you know you'll need to bring on a replacement for him. I do wonder how he feels about it. He seems a fighter and not someone to freeload (e.g. perhaps Ramirez) so I can't imagine he's especially happy.

CONFIRMED: Saints sign Juanmi on four-year deal
Dangermouth replied to trousers's topic in The Saints
In terms of ability and skill Juanmi >> JWP. Now if he had VVD's frame he'd be in Chelski's team. -
James Ward-Prowse's list of indisputable, unimprovable weaknesses
Dangermouth replied to ScepticalStan's topic in The Saints
I do hope that one of the reasons for signing Clasie was that the other midfielders will learn from him and look to always pass forward and do so intelligently and well. Because physically JWP may be able to last 90 mins (but does he ever get near a tackle?) but he's comparable to Clasie in that they're slight of stature. -
Can't see they ever interviewed him. Why do you think they did? It's very sparse for an interview. Look at how they do it in newspapers e.g. The Telegraph. Then, again, is it an interview?

If you don't know the difference between 'bear' and 'bare', it's probably the case that you're either slack with your spell checking (although it should never actually come to that) or you're pretty thick. I'd go for the latter and leave it at that. Well done to whoever wrote a rather crap piece of opinion-guff.

James Ward-Prowse's list of indisputable, unimprovable weaknesses
Dangermouth replied to ScepticalStan's topic in The Saints
I really can think of no game where he has excelled, or done so for any real amount of time nor taken the game by the scruff of its neck or anything. Yes, he's young but he's also played lots of games which most agree is the best way to learn the game and even though he's being treated a bit like a journeyman being expected to fill in here and there he should be doing better than he does many of us think. We also do not see any sign that he's brilliant but inconsistent or any indication that he hasn't reached the very heights of his ability. One of the criticisms of Reed is that all he does is play the ball safely and keep it moving but doesn't actually do anything and the same is true of JWP for the most part and we all know that propaganda football might look pretty but it's wholly ineffective. -

Thank you for your erudite post. I have watched the goal again. Same conclusion. It should have been cleared by a half decent defence before it got near Romeu. As for the validity of the response, if you can I suggest you look at Can's ball to Sturridge as what would be considered a 'proper' assist rather than say a punt from the keeper which bounces over everyone and lands at someone's feet. -

It was a corner. It went through a load of people it shouldn't have and Romeu kind of shinned it in. Hardly great play, more as much as a cock up as Villa's. -

Well he's been a professional footballer for years. Been at a good club. Played a large number of games at a high level and now the coaches will decide he's a bit slow. Would have thought they'd have noticed a few years ago and worked on it since. Would have thought there were other things they'd have noticed too. As for the coaches/managers liking him. I don't care what he shows in training, only in games. If he can't do enough in those then he's not good enough. And he's had a lot of opportunity, he's been given a lot of time by the fans and posters here who have only really started to criticise him all the time here recently and he has not yet put even two good games together. Let alone half a season which would make him inconsistent. He's poor and that's it. There's no point in loaning him out and I can't see us selling him until he turns out to be good. So we're stuck with him and left to just hope he can do more than copy Jonny Wilkinson. -
Or you could look at it as the league is tight. We're in the middle and not doing well. Unless we do so it can quickly become the case that we drop down the table. For us to climb the table we have to do well and have others above us do poorly. 6 points off top where everyone else is 5 points from the top means we're bottom so simply looking at it that way (and I know you didn't directly, but) isn't much of a considered analysis if you want to take that view. It's nice to hear the players aren't down and let's hope they get back to playing well consistently.

Southampton to launch major US coaching initiative
Dangermouth replied to Lallana's Left Peg's topic in The Saints
very narrow minded approach. Glad Krueger and others have their heads screwed on. -
These articles relate to a few people who don't know any better being condemned by the majority who do. If you wished to make an alternative point, you did not. If you wished to point out that most Celtic fans seem ok, which is probably on par with most other people, then you have. As I don't know your intention I've included both to cover both eventualities.

Well at least he got there in the end and recognised VVD's ability.

Wooooooooooooo!

If that's an argument, I'd suggest you learn to read what is read and then respond to that; not show your failings in attempting to comprehend basic English. The premise was, and is, that there was a sudden upswing in over-confidence that was unjustified. Clear?

Actually there was quite a bit of stuff around December (before we decided to implode) where a number of posters were very cocky and asked questions along the lines of "Who would we like in our CL group?". Far too presumptuous; just like all those posters who didn't even consider the Danish lot to be worthy of consideration and had us already in the group stages of the EL. So, for once, I endorse Turkish's memory. Patently we did underperform last season and should have made the CL stages (come 3rd) I think.

Feel a bit sorry for SRL. Seems he's only ever going to be a sub from now on. Shoulda stayed a L'pool and then retired at the end of the season perhaps.

1/ Buy a ton of feeder clubs and rebrand them. Like the idea of the sporting empire e.g. womens' teams, etc so will push that. 2/ Set up academies everywhere, bringing in the best coaches. 3/Increase ticket prices for away fans to £1,000,000,000 per minute* and subsidise home supporters' tickets to £250 fixed being reduced to £50 if one has been bought continously for 30 years and provided no break thereafter. 4/Regenerate Southampton so it doesn't look like poundshopland. 5/ Spray the PO postcode with Febreeze to get rid of the stench. *double for Liverpool, by a factor of 12, 000, 000 for Spuds.

Things I like about VVD having now seen some more of him are that he has nice skill, awareness and is intelligent. Also, while big he's not in especially good shape and he's a natural. The way he hits the ball and generates such power is a bit like MLT did.
