  1. It certainly doesn't make me feel better - recognising the complexity of it is a real headache. Anyway! Can you explain why this is happening now, and not at other junctures in history, if Islam is the root cause? It's been around a while. Or, if you'd prefer to answer a different point - do you recognise that casting Islam in opposition to the West is from the Isis playbook?
  2. Not worth arguing if you can't see the difference between those quotes! If Islam were in itself the root cause - which you seem to be suggesting, though I hope you're not - this particular form of violence would be as many hundreds of years old as the religion. In reality, we have to look at how different moving factors (politics, economics, international relations, technology) interact with the religion and create the conditions for fascism to fester. As I say, it's fascism - or hatred, if you're prefer to use that word - which binds all terror. Fascism/hatred weren't inherent in Germany in the 1930s - Germany and the world at that time simply created the conditions for it to breed.
  3. I don't deny it, I think taking such a reductionist approach is counterproductive. The problem is (aspects of) Islam plus political instability plus deprivation plus all sorts of other things, and separating them isn't helpful. Separating Islam in particular is a problem, because it drives a wedge between Islam and 'us'. That's the wedge which terrorists want to build until it's all-out war between two opposing sides.
  4. Certainly, though if he'd only promised what he'd delivered things wouldn't look so bad. It's his ambition that will have concerned her, along with the desire to draw a line under the Cameron era, because he's clearly more capable than many of those she did pick.
  5. Depending on the age of the child, I'd give them both theories and let them choose. But it really does depend on their ability to understand reason!
  6. Real shame if Kante goes, I want to see him in the Champions League ASAP.
  7. Taking this out of the Puel thread so we can discuss it properly. The thread which ties these incidents isn't Islam - it's fascism. It's the same old fascism which has been around for centuries and finds different hosts to inject its poison into. At the moment the most common vehicle is Salafi Islam, but it manifests in attacks by garden variety racists and homophobes like the Orlando shooter and archetypal fascists like Anders Breivik. The divide, as always, is between those who want to live in harmony with others and those who don't. The problem with blaming Islam - rather than working with its people - is that it puts you on the wrong side of this divide.
  8. Bit unfair on Redmond - he's perfectly capable of scoring goals.
  9. I don't know a thing about French football, but I do know we've struggled badly whenever we've been without one in the Premier League.
  10. Great stuff - he's earnt his pay rise.
  11. I'm not sure I like the idea of entering the Europa campaign with one tough defensive midfielder - if that's not what Hojbjerg is. We relied on Romeu a lot last season. Reed's claim that we have the strongest midfield options in the league suggest we might not sign anyone else, though.
  12. Anyone know what role he's likely to fill? Looks more like a Clasie than Wanyama to me. Perhaps they want him playing alongside Romeu?
  13. Wait until he leaves/retires and decide with a cool head. No one wants banner regret!
  14. The man replaced Rickie Lambert without a sweat. He's been brilliant and I'll miss him.
  15. They said five wanted to go, didn't they?
  16. Being reported more widely now. Looks good
  17. I've always wanted France to win the tournament after everything they've been through as a nation. I think I'll stick by that, but what an achievement it would be for Jose and Cedric to lift the trophy. Would be delighted for them.
  18. Watermark's gonna be great and all, but what's a landmark cinema when it's at home?
  19. "From becoming one of the founder members of the football league in 1888, right through to present day when we announced a new service which allows fans to purchase match tickets through text message." I've got a tear in my eye, here
  20. I really hope Under Armour paid for this video and not us. What a load of overblown nonsense
  21. I very much doubt we'll see that player again, not with that speed, but I hope we'll still see a good one.
  22. How do you explain the fact he was pro-EU in practically everything he said up until this year?
  23. And I'd take every single one of them at Saints* - wouldn't you? *Mostly but not entirely for our first XI

    Euro 2016

Bertrand's having a pretty poor game. Glad Clyne's bombing forward so much, simply because one of the 5 Live pundits said he would mostly stay back and was less attacking than Walker.
  25. Personally, I blame the manager for playing him on his own against Midtjylland. At least put a keeper on!
