Rather pointlessly, I had a look at what point we sold all the other defectors over the last few summer windows. The majority of sales happened on or before 1st July and the only sales that occurred later than at this point in previous years was Lovren (27th July) and Chambers (28th July), with no major sales in August. So, if we make it to August, then we are in the clear !

I know Chalet mentioned Spurs, but can't see them buying unless they shift one on. Guess that leaves Chelsea, and the Alex Sandro deal has gone very quiet.

Mendy, Kolarov and Bertrand would seem a tad excessive. I'd say Right Back would be a more pressing issue for them, seeing as they released Sagna and Zabaleta and lost out on Alves.

And how do you propose we do a deal with a team that doesn't want to meet our valuation of the player? And isn't one of the criticisms of the board that they sell too early and too cheaply in the window?

I'd be staggered if we weren't in for him, especially at that price. Whether or not he prefers somewhere else is another matter.

It's a tricky one. I agree we've been blessed over last few years with some quality centre backs and would like to see a top quality one come in to partner VVD. However, we've got a very promising defender in stephens who needs regular games at the top level in order to continue his progression. Who knows, perhaps he could be even better than Fonte? I think a season next to VVD would bring him on leaps and bounds. At the end of the day, it's the clubs MO to develop youngsters - why wouldn't they continue this with Stephens who has shown he is capable of playing at this level? Plus, I think you can contribute a fair bit of our defensive problems to the balance in midfield. I love Romeu, but he can't do the job of Morgan and Vic on his own.
