Saints to go marching in for Shearer

Alan Oliver

Southampton's prospective new owners are ready to offer Alan Shearer an emotional return to the south coast - after being turned down by old boy Gordon Strachan.

The Matthew Le Tissier-led Pinnacle consortium are watching events on Tyneside with interest after learning that Newcastle interim boss Shearer has still not been contacted by the Malaysian group keen to buy Toon from Mike Ashley.

Pinnacle are ready to make their move after being snubbed by Strachan, who said he had no interest in returning to the club he managed from 2001 to 2004.

Shearer has now emerged as the No.1 target. That will be bad news for Toon fans, as will comments from Joe Kinnear that he is ready to take up the reins again at St James' Park after recovering from heart problems.

The Malaysian group who are reported to be ready to hand Ashley £100million for Toon have made no attempts to contact Shearer. Newcastle insiders believe that the consortium is the same one pipped by Ashley when he bought the club just over two years ago.

Would have been Strachan had the 10 points been lifted. I am officially ITK on that one.

Shearer was the next choice but he is still uncertain about his Newcastle role.

Dowie also in the frame.

Thing is Pinnacle are gonners now.

The People is a joke of a newspaper.

its totally made up and, and so badly researched (i.e. they probably aren't on top of the fact that the Pinnacle bid has collapsed) that its utterly implausible

Alan Oliver is no joke! He covered Newcastle for the Chronicle for nearly 30 years, and is generally recognised as one of the top football writers in the country.

His contacts in the north-east are beyond compare.

He is one of that rare and dying breed, a fearless journalist who always put the story first to the point where Newcastle Utd genuinely feared him, and treated him with the utmost respect.

Sir John Hall, Freddie Shepherd, Mike Ashley all made sure that their first task on taking office was to make sure they had a good relationship with Ollie.

I'm not saying he gets every story right, every time, but you would be foolish to completely rubbish his stuff.

I'd heard a few months ago ( before Shearer's caretaker spell at Newcastle), that he had been approached by an overseas consortium (don't know which one) to take over as manager. This was when we first went into administration and was confirm a week or so ago by someone else involved in the Pinnacle bid. I think that they are getting their wires crossed - Shearer was definitely approached, but not by Pinnacle.

He is good but I think this time wide of the mark.

I'm not sure that's true. I think many Newcastle fans dislike him because he's been to close to the people in charge. He had his head so far up Freddy Shepherd's arse he could see what he had for breakfast. He never once criticized Shepherd, despite the fact he was clearly completely incompetent and hugely unpopular. To be fair he's not the only one up there. That David Craig on Sky makes me want to throw up whenever I hear him speak.

Covering the local club -especially Newcastle - is a thankless task. You're never going to please all the people, all the time.

For every one who criticised him for being up Freddy's backside, there would have been two who thought he was bring too harsh.

I'm not saying the story in The People is dead right. Looking at it, it's patently written from a Newcastle angle and is more a criticism of Newcastle's prospective owners not contacting Shearer. Saints part in the story is more incidental, a small, veiled threat that Toon's new owners had better get hold of Shearer's number fast.

What I found risible was the outright dismissal of the piece as absolute rubbish.

Shearer has just made his first two signings for Newcastle , so think its utter rubbish

Sheerer isn't actually contracted at Newcastle at the moment. The pre-season training and player movements are being decided by Colin Calderwood and Chris Hughton

Sheerer may go back when they get bought out.

Ok,i know very little about the Swiss deal, they may well be a terrible proposition, but i can't make an informed decision about the pro's and con's for them, but i tell you something i don't want Pinnacle or anyone else at the moment in time loitering and stirring crap up in the background.

I just want the Swiss to complete, give me a little reasurance for now that we have a club then deal with whatever things they propose for the club as and when they crop up.

The fact that it's written by the Newcastle correspondant should give you a clue.

It's not a story for us, its a story to scare Toon fans. If this journo is in Shepard's pocket as others have said then it is probably connected with his plans to buy the club and a bit of spin to put a bit of peril into the deal to speed it up.

Although if I was a NUFC fan I wouldn't want Shearer anyway. Job's too big for him.

That said, I think he'd get us out of L1 as long as he had a decent assistant.

the average newcastle fan is a nut-job...the stick they gave sam allardyce was embarassing...if they backed him they would still be a prem club easily

Well Alan Oliver was banned from St James Park back in March for a story in wrote about Joe Kinnear suffering a health setback. Ironically this came just after he received a lifetime achievement award for his coverage of Newcastle for 30 years. I doubt there is a great deal in this story but Oliver is an excellent writer and it's only a section of Newcastle fans that did not agree with many of his stories so they decided to rubbish him and it was even suggested he was a Sunderland fan ( which is absolute nonsense). I agree with thedelldays that many Newcastle fans are totally bonkers and I give no credibilty to their views at all !

He actually could mean that.

If we are taken over by the Swiss consortium do they have ANY knowledge of english football. At the least we need some players and a good coach.

Do the Dutch have ANY knowledge of English football?

Rest my case. :)

Wotte I have said is that we need a man/men who have some knowledge of our football.

Wotte has had a season in our club and helped get us relegated. Thus he does have some knowledge though not as a winner.

Wotte also could have the chance to employ an english coach to help him or even re-instate one that Lowe suspended.

The Swiss could well have a plan that doesn't include Wotte.

Until the new owner is installed we won't really have a clue.

If they care enough to bother to buy us, you'd think they'd care enough to want their own manager in.

Surely they can't put that effort in to buy us just to dish up more of the same?
