Nick Illingsworth = Colemanballs

I have stared at this for ages and I can't fathom it out at all. Has the forum been hacked by a spammer or does this have some meaning that I am too dense to comprehend?

I'd take a guess that on page 18 of Private Eye issue 1241, something Illingsworth said has been printed in their Colemanballs column.

Named after the sports commentator David Coleman, who used to put his foot in his mouth on a regular basis.

I'm guessing it's the comment about people saying Wotte is Dutch?

Difficult to check since the online version is only on issue 1240. Why start a thread with the most cryptic content imagineable referring to something that nobody can read unless they go to the shop? From the "Mom" and "Way to go" bits I would hazard a guess at an American who likes to set puzzles for people :-)

Come on guys. just because you didn't know what the message said, didn't make it nonsense or cryptic. I understood exactly what soccermom meant and went and picked up the magazinze in question and read the section refrenced.

you should all be ASHAMED for not knowing what it meant. tch!

I have to say I find it embarassing when they wheel out the likes of Illingsworth and Clive Foley on TV.

It's not very representative, but who should they wheel out? Over many years now, since the Branfoot days really, we've been divided and have felt the need to defend our independence from the club, which has lead to a few people being rather self-appointed as "spokespersons" without really speaking for anybody but themselves. Let's not necessarily blame them for that but rather plan for the future.

Is it time to start thinking in terms of the official supporters club again?

Or just time to accept that every club probably feels the same about whichever unqualified but available talking head gets wheeled out to represent them on the telly?

Lonely Housewife GSOH own teeth would love to meet Matelot.....especially into submariners.

Surely having one's own teeth is a drawback when it comes to submariners - can't take them out when required.

Get a grip. (and you can take that any way you like...):p

And yes, talking heads are fitted with wheels as standard, before anyone reports me to the Eye.

As in Grant Coleman Radio Solent? Used to love his commentary.

Agree with you on Foley but what about his SISA buddy O'Callaghan for his insightful comment on the takeover by Mr Liebherr:

'Good to have an owner with a nice bit of wedge in his pocket'

Classy. Bound to open doors to the boardroom that one.

If we are going to have a spokesperson then Nick Illingsworth will do for me and at least he tries to make comment with consideration to all our views and not just his own.

Dave Merrington could fill Colemanballs on a weekly basis if Hislop and chums cared to listen. Never forget the 90 minutes of confusion he caused when we played Burley away and Burnley made some dodgy substitutions.

Still the best summariser there is on Saints games.

Way back when in 1977 or maybe 1978, Talking Heads came over on what I believe was their first tour to promote their new album Talking Heads '77. They played at Southampton University. At the time I worked in a record shop in Winchester and we had tickets for the gig. I was stood at the front looking up at her. She was very unsure and David Byrne kept coaching and encouraging her. She was using a large green plastic triangular plectrum and dropped it. It bounced off the stage and I picked it up. She had spares so I trousered it.

By the way, the support band that night was Dire Straits!!!

How have you got her plectrum?

Brilliant.

This thread is horrifying, amusing and informative, all at the same time.

Horrifying that people did not get/understand the Private Eye reference. Hang your heads in shame you heathens. You know who you are.

Amusing with the Nick Illingsworth reference, but not surprising, as he does similar work on an almost daily basis.

Informative, with Talking Heads revelations. Impressed. Respect.

That's what makes coming on here while the youth are at school so rewarding.

Eye 1241, page 18. Way to go, Strobes!

Understandable why this may confuse people

wow

as illustrated by TDD

Scummer tries to reassure TDD and tell him what it's all about

Sorry, done from my phone, so couldn't be ****d to type the whole thing out.

"Never has a football club in the size of Saints in recent history really had to stare into the precipice." Quality.

SoccerMom clears up any remaining confusion, confirms Scummer's thought process to be correct, though it seems he has identified the incorrect quote.

not too sure what this thread is about..?

And then we learn why it is best for some people to spend large amounts of time underwater surrounded by creatures with a similar intellect
