Thought he looked patchy. Kept drifting in and leaving his man free. Am sure he will be fine though.

I'd rather he drifted in than drifted up or out, at least he's defending the box then rather than out of the game...

OS says he set up Rasiak's first from a free kick too?

I thought he looked good both going forward and defensively......certainly not bad for a first game.

Mind you he is a left footer playing as a left back which at Southampton is almost unheard of these days :)

Apart from a few games with Jermaine Wright and Ostlund at LB, we've had left-footers at LB in the last 3 years. I'm pretty certain that Bale, Surman, Skacel and Vignal are all left footed. It's not as if we've been lacking left footed players in the that time.

He was better than "reasonably competent". He had a good game, and will only get better when he gets to understand his team mates. It's good-bye to Molineux.
too many dodgy moments to say he had a good game. Reasonably competent describes his performance pretty well but I am sure he will be fine for us - I hope so.

I thought he looked ok, played quite well and linked up quite well with Mills and Gobern. A couple of positional faults but nothing major seeing as he's not match-fit and he only joined on tuesday, he did well. Will turn out to be a good signing IMO.

Looked a decent player. the whole back four were solid. He has a good left foot and hit in cross for Raziak to head home.

I think you will find it was Murty that crossed from the right for Rasiak to head home. Harding looked steady but tended to drift into the middle, give him a couple of weeks to settle in and he will do well.

I think Derry meant the free kick for Rasiak's first. Was an excellent delivery.

I think people need to judge him at L1 level. Obviously we will not be signing the same calibre of player that we are used to seeing. We have to lower our expectations now. People will need to accept this sooner rather than later.

He had a fairly good game - especially as it was his first game!

I guess that he was being a bit flippant, but if you consider that both Surman and Skacel were listed on the OS as midfielders then the point is that we have not really had a consistent 'specialist' left back for a long while now !

Ps. sometimes our subs in that position have been starnge as well, I remember Jake Thomson being forced to play there late last season !

He was 'box' defending, doubt you know what that means though.

I know what it means. It means drifting in and letting your winger get a clear run in - doesn't it? I saw that Egyptian bunch playing Barcelona today were also 'box' defending.

My view was that Harding was defensively solid and in defensive positions generally got the ball under control coolly and got it clear without resorting to the big hoof. He was also adventurous going forward and looked to build attacking plays from the back.

However, on a couple of occasions he tried to dribble the ball towards the box but in that situation did not have the right level of ball control to be attempting any such thing and lost the ball. Of course, this may be because of lack of fitness rather than necessarily a lack of ability in such situations. Nevertheless, my gut reaction was that he would be better sticking to defensive duties and building forward plays rather than trying to dribble!

With players of the calibre of Lallana, Rasiak, John, Mills and Gobern who all showed the flair to be able to dribble, I would say leave it to them and encourage them to do it more rather than expect it from Harding. Neverthless, I think he could do well for us.

Harding put the free kick in from the right for the second goal and Murty crossed for the third.
