(Thread started for NNS)

Afternoon my Stripey friends. Apologies for dropping this into the thread but I can't start my own. Of course, if anyone would care to create a new thread for it then I'd be most grateful.

I have some places left for our charity golf day if anyone is interested, or if you know anyone who plays then please forward info below. Cheers!

Ryder Cup-style Charity Golf Day

In aid of the Smile4Rich Appeal for the Wessex Neurological Centre

Quindell Club - Wednesday 9th September 2009

Teams captained by Saints and Pompey Legends - Matt Le Tissier & Guy Whittingham

Based on Ryder Cup golf, but played over 27 holes in a single day, comprising 9 holes of 4-balls and 18 holes of singles, this format has been hugely popular with those who’ve played in previous years, and has produced nail-biting finishes, last year requiring a sudden-death play-off to split the teams (which saw MLT slicing his tee-shot into the car park, resulting in a Pompey win ). Aside from the honour for the winning team of lifting the ‘Smile4Rich Trophy’, there’ll be a medal for every participant, plus trophies and some great prizes to be won in our ‘Longest Drive’ and ‘Nearest-the-Pin’ competitions, and a brand new car worth £10,000 for a hole-in-one!

This is a really enjoyable format (not your average charity golf day), and at a cost of just £100 per pair of players (including coffee/tea & bacon roll on arrival, and a ‘Brunch’ breakfast after the first 9 holes) it represents fantastic value too. For full details and an entry form, please email info@smile4rich.co.uk or click the following link http://www.smile4rich.co.uk/fundraising/event-detail-28 but you'll have to be quick as places are limited and entries must be submitted by the end of August.

There are also some great sponsorship opportunities available from just £75!

Dear All

Details of a great Charity Golf day are posted above. Having spoken to the co-ordinator of the charity last night, I know he is approx 12 players short of target. If there are any golfers amongst you who would enjoy a bit of friendly banter between saints & pompey over 27 holes, a bit of food, a few drinks etc, then please contact Neil ASAP. Closing date for late entries is mid-day on Monday since everything goes to print on Monday evening in readiness for Wednesday's event. For the golfers amongst you, this really is a good day - the last few years have been crackers. And of course for anyone with any other agenda, you could have a quiet word (within reason!) and ask me and Matt anything that's on your mind........

A quick word about the charity itself. In July 2002, a 15 year boy, Richard Bowler, collapsed whilst training with his local football club. He suffered a massive brain haemorrhage, never regained consciousness and died the following day. Rich was a Saints fan, not that that should matter. The emotion which followed Rich's death seen waves on donations made to the Wessex Neuro centre, and after some time, Neil Westbrook (who was Rich's parents friend and next door neighbour of some years), closed his own business down so he could dedicate his life to saving others. The Charity raises money for equipment, projects, research etc and really does improve peoples lives. I can't remember the exact figure, but one of the most recent patients has seen fits/seizures reduce from in excess of 100 a day to just 2. As a parent of a disabled child, I know very well what a difference this must make to these families, and sufferers alike.

Right, that's enough of the morbid stuff. This will be a great day, we'd love to see you there so if you can spare the time, fancy a bit of fun, and unwittingly help the charity, please contact Neil

All the best, and best of luck with your new signings. I really really hope Saturday marks the start of the season 'proper' with a win.

Regards

Tony

Thank you to those who did contact Neil and I hope you have a nice day. The forecast is good, and it will hopefully be 3rd time lucky for Matt to try take that trophy back into 'red' hands! All the best. Tony

I heard that you and Mickey Fialka couldn't raise the funds to play.

Is that true?

No problem Bongo. I didn't know Richard myself - I only became involved with the Charity after he passed away, but of course I know Nick and Janet and some others in the family now. The Charity goes beyond just raising money - it saves peoples lives. So with all the other rubbish that is going on in the world today, its great to be a part of that - and that little bugger Rich always makes sure we get decent weather too!! If it is of any interest, I'll make sure the result gets posted. Regards. Tony

I see the result has been posted. Unfortunately despite our efforts, we couldn't get that bloody trophy off Pompey again this year. But there's alway next time.

Speaking of which, the event is held in September each year. Details will appear on the events calendar on the Smile4Rich website (http://www.smile4rich.co.uk). Because of the clash with the cricket, numbers were harder to find this year, so hopefully with more warning, next year will be booked further in advance.

Simon, well done on the prizes. A good day was had by all, depsite the result, and a few bob was raised for the charity. Thanks again to those who did participate.

All the best

Tony

Maybe if it was played at a decent course it would attract golfers. As soon as I saw Quindell I lost interest. Like the Ryder cup it could be rotated home and away each year.

If it was on a council par 3 course there would still be people wanting to play as it is for an excellent charity. May be if you got off the high horse and gave it a go you might feel differently.

I think Neil chose the course because of its location between Portsmouth and Southampton.

Mick Channon there as well. Ian Botham popped in for a chat before going into the media, Brett Lee & Watson came in after the game and a nice between innings chat from John Crawley.

Also had a nice chat with Geoff Miller, Chairman of Selectors before the game

Bet you didn't see Lord Lucan riding Shergar.

That's up to them. There are a lot of charity days for good causes at decent courses competing for a limited number of available golfers. Quindell isn't the sort of course that interests too many.

The players like MLT probably get a free day out but if I'm going to pay for the privilege I'd prefer to play on a decent course.

you certanly wont be paying 50 quid for breakfast and lunch. 27 holes and great prizes at many local courses on a charity day.

i play to a decent standard and quindale is ok......its not long but it has improved 100% from a few years back!!....normally its the all the gear no idea golfers who put courses like quindale, but if they play it they end up hacking it to death and losing 10 golf balls.

My lowest handicap was 4. up to 6 at 63 then due to a knee operation which took 3 years to get over, now at a more than competitive 12. I play six days a week and will be disappointed if I'm not back to 7/8 by early next year. I was a member at Stoneham for over 25 years but the terrain is too up and down for me now.

Like I said Quindell doesn't attract me.
