Thedelldays Posted 17 October, 2009 Share Posted 17 October, 2009 seriously..? we have a great strength in depth now.. easily IMO the best squad in league 1....to bring a player like connelly off the bench in this league is fantastic.. Just imagine if we went up this season...I am starting to think it is very possible....my sort of tipping point was being within 9 points of the playoffs at Xmas with a look to bring in an addition or two.. we could be within 9 points sooner.. this is fantastic.... how great would it be to have the ground singing the old.. E I E I E I O...up the football league we go.... good times
S-Clarke Posted 17 October, 2009 Share Posted 17 October, 2009 Maybe not quite the best ''squad'' as a whole yet, as i think Leeds have got a v strong bench when all are fit - although we're close to that. We do have a brilliant starting 11 though, could even call it a L1 dream team seeing as we spent the summer grabbing the oppositions best players, which was fun. RedAndWhite91 Posted 17 October, 2009 Share Posted 17 October, 2009 I honestly think we have the best team in the league, and if not that, then we are certainly in the top 3 at least. With players like KD and Lambert etc at our disposal, and now as you said being able to bring players like Connolly off the bench, we seriously have the best, if not one of the best teams in the league. But come on: how great would it be to have the ground singing the old.. E I E I E I O...up the football league we go.... The ground won't be singing that, only one stand and a couple of corners will... Must admit it would be brilliant though!

Fergie Posted 17 October, 2009 Share Posted 17 October, 2009 I think we have the best starting line up in the league for sure. every one of our players can/could/should be playing in the championship with maybe one or two exceptions getting a chance with smaller clubs in the premiership. I think we have the best keeper in the league, one of the best centre-halfs in Jaidi, awesome midfield involving Lallana, schneiderlin, hammond, Papa Waigo and even with Holmes when fit, also a couple players on the bench pushing for a midfield start...and specially with lambert and connolly up top with lallana and papa waigo possibly even playing there we have an extremly strong starting line up. Maybe not the best squad but for sure an aotomatic promotion chasing first 11 if not play-offs for sure! Dont want to get carried away from winning 3 on the trot but things are looking bright...a statue of pards next to Mr Bates maybe?? or even of Markus Liebherr for making this all possible!! smithy Posted 17 October, 2009 Share Posted 17 October, 2009 I'd say the strongest first 11 in the league and right now probably the most confident and best working one. Strong all over the pitch and able to score and control the game. We really have turned the corner and now need to push on, which I think is already happening. PNE are close to admin (their chairman said that when they sold St Ledger) - if we offer them the £££ they will say yes. I'd bet Trotts would be keen too. Things are looking up but starting off on minus 10 and still finishing in the top 6 is a big big ask. Has any team been promoted after starting their season with minus 10? Has any team bean promoted after starting their season with minus 10? Not sure but Leeds made a damn good fist of it - despite starting on -15 a couple of years ago, they would have finished 2nd if not for the deduction (finished 3rd in the end i think) At the end of the day, a few of our players are too good for this level - and if they can maintain their form, we'll win most games. EastleighSoulBoy Posted 17 October, 2009 Share Posted 17 October, 2009 Give the lads a little more time to get it together with AP's guidance. Maybe one or two additions/changes in January might see us with a very strong squad. This team is beginning to improve more quickly as the weeks, and experience, pass by. I'm now beginning to think a top ten spot isn't impossible whilst dreaming that we may, just possibly, edge a play off spot? I really don't want to count my chickens but that feelgood factor, which I lost many years ago, seems to be returning.

oxfordshire_saint Posted 17 October, 2009 Share Posted 17 October, 2009 The best thing about the current squad is that on paper and based on the last few performances, they're creating a bit of a fear factor. I think at the start of the season people were looking at us as a soft touch, that they could take the p*ss out of us, but now were gelling and showing people that we need to be shown some respect. Getting results away at places like Southend and Oldham will have people realising that we aren't here to fook around anymore.
spyinthesky Posted 17 October, 2009 Share Posted 17 October, 2009 If I was AP, I would be looking to bring in another right back, a lively left footed midfielder/striker and defensive midfielder who could double up as a central defender. We need to ensure that Trottman (or similar) is in place come January, See no place for Forecast/Molyneaux/Lancashire/Gillett/Pulis/Saga and possibly Holmes. Ithink you're clutching at straws to find something negative to talk about during our current excellent form. The situation is that Trotman is on loan til January. We can't do anything until January, so why worry about it now? The only other loanees who are regularly involved are Papa (who is on loan with a view to buy), and occasionally Melis and Antonio. 2 of our regular starters are loanees. Hardly anything to kick up a fuss about. Did you notice we've won 4 in a row?! Maybe talk about the good things we're doing for a while?! Try it, you might cheer yourself up. up and away Posted 18 October, 2009 Share Posted 18 October, 2009 If we lose Hammond in midfield for what ever reason, the whole midfield and most of the defence will revert back to as it was. Wooton is still the same player, just operating in a an effective limited role under Hammonds shadow. This was why I was so keen to see a Gillett of old step forward, but sadly no. We need someone in Wootons position that can take up the slack when required. Many have been saying how much the defence has improved, that in the main is down to the cover they are being afforded and I feel would easily revert to their former glories, if that cover is no longer there. How would you suggest replacing Trotman in January ? Agree - just look at recent history: we were up sh*tcreak after Jack Cork went to Watford, even though it looked like a virtual certainty right to the final week he would be returning/staying. And to a lesser extent, Pearce's surprise recall by Reading left a hole, though we ultimately found JPS. Can't leave anything to chance. Always good to own your players, especially if they're young and improving. Match experience can raise the value of the player no end; yet with loanees, having made the investment and provided them the opportunities, you ultimately enjoy none of the return on them. S-Clarke Posted 18 October, 2009 Share Posted 18 October, 2009 completely agree with alps on this one. This club has been prone to an ''oh, it can wait'' attitude for too long now. I'd be surprised if Pard's hasn't started exploring the possibility of a perm. for Trotts already. I'd hate to loose him, as we've built our defensive play around him - for set plays anyway.
