The Official "Boycott the Echo" Thread

Block 5

Recommended Posts

I vow never to buy the Echo again. Actually I've never bought it anyway as I live in Christchurch. I never buy newspapers at all, I think they are a total waste of money.

Have to say though, Ian Murray is starting to make himself look a right tit.

i heard that ian murray has been head hunted by a yet unnamed northern newspaper ;-)

Nah - just 'phoned the Newcastle Evening Chronicle and they said "Howay, pet, Ian who-like?" (translates as "My dear chap, who is this Ian fellow of whom you speak?")

Appalling journalism from the Echo - wouldn't buy it if I lived there...

I don't quite understand the dislike of the Echo, which is the only local paper we've got. They seemed to have upset NC by publishing material already in the public domain, and have then been banned from SMS when used by other organisations for non-football matters. Saints needs a local paper and the paper needs Saints. The two parties should sit down and talk to each other, but it's not quite as simple as just having a go at the Echo. How can a newspaper possibly agree not to write about what is already in the public domain?!

It's the DE's 'hard done by' attitidue re: the charity event that really p***ed me off. How dare they try and use a Charity to make Cortese look bad - extremely unprofessional.

That Murray fella is going on like a little girl, it's childish and tiresome, and for that reason, I won't be buying the Echo.

What is he actually going on about I thought the Echo were reporting things that had happened they cannot surely stop publishing things which Cortese may not like

Sorry but they were only reporting what happened if Cortese had not banned them there would be no story.

The Charity are apparently upset with SFC but if that is not the case you maybe right

Don't think Saints do need a local paper with the OS and also they can reach fans via key people such as forums as this. The Echo is a dismal paper run by dismal people and overall a dismal company (Newsquest). Look at how the Guardian has gone downhill since they bought it. If we do need a local paper, we don't need a faceless US corporation to provide it.

Hot breaking News:

An Un-named Project manager somewhere on the M1 claimed today that he alledgedly will not be buying his local newspaper ever again.

The Project Manager, who uses a sudonym that he has had for many years, claims that he will not be buying it in the future as the poor journalistic standard and their capacity to 'shoot themselves in the foot' plus their incessant personal attacks on the Chairman of SFC had caused them to 'Get right on my man-tits'.

'He wont even just read the old copies left in his local chinky whilst he is waiting for his Sweet and Sour anymore.' Said a spokesman for a top 20 construction company, which has a commercial deal with the Project Manager, this morning.

One experienced construction journalist, who writes for the Italian design magazine L’Arca , said: “Who? I have never heard of Secret Site Agent or any news of changes within his newpaper buying habits.'

However, it has been reported in the National press that a Construction manager, who works for the Italian construction company TODINI COSTRUZIONI GENERALI SpA , said 'Yes, we know Secret Site Agent well, and we can confirm that he will, in future, be looking to cease the buying of his local paper. We are surprised that there are those claiming not to know him. Why, when he was last here for the European Road Constructors conference to lecture on Stone Mastic Asphalt, I remember him appearing with His Holiness the Pope in St. Peter's square on the landing and many people in the crowd, especially visitors to our great country from around the world, saying 'Whose that man up there stood next to Secret Site Agent?'

As written on my Blackberry from my ever fertile mind.

Well said Clifford dont really know what the fuss is about the Echo just appears to be reporting things that have happened

The fuss as you put it is about an agreement NC had with The Echo.

He planned to have a press conference to unveil the plans for the new training ground to the local media. He asked the echo to refrain from running the story until after the conference so they could be briefed on the plans. The Echo agreed to do so.

Then the day before the conference The Echo ran the story. Claiming it was already in the public domain.

Translated means "we wanted to cash in on it before it became a nothing story".

Now i don't know about you, maybe you do things different to me but i would be ****ed off at them too for that. The Echo are supposed to be a local paper not a national paper. They should be having respect for all local organisations not trying to make money off them.

Southampton FC have given The Echo a lot of inside stories over the years of which they have obviously made money from. Without that connection as others have mentioned The Echo becomes pretty pointless seeing as Saints are amongst if not their main draw story.

The Echo should have loyalty and respect for the club due to the special access it had been granted for many years. By running the story early shows a clear action of mistrust. Could you tell these people your future plans and ask them to keep it secret?

Journalists live by a un-written code which is to not print anything if you have been asked to wait. The national press could not give a fook about this rule but the local press are different. For example the people on BBC Solent. They have access to the club just as The Echo did and a few of them would of been totally aware of people who were in talks with the club. They could of mentioned those things on air and for all of 5mins had a scoop. One that would of been forgotten by the same time next week. But they don't do that.

Because the relationship between the club and the local media is more intimate.

The Echo went against that code to simply try and look good, to try and make extra money.

If you are dis-loyal and go back on your word then you deserve the treatment you get.

Since they were banned rather then try and mend the rift they have done everything they could to increase it and at the sametime create stories that are obviously personal to NC. By the looks of it they made them up.

Each time a story like that appears the people become more aware just how bad The Echo has become. They are trying to create an image for NC that is the total opposite to how the fans and how the local organisations see him.

So the "fuss" is that by running the story The Echo went back on an agreement and by doing so basically bite the hand that feeds them. Without Saints they are nothing, without the inside access to the club they have to fish for stories on the internet to try and create something.

They should be ashamed of themselves and whoever fecked up the relationship with the club should be fired. They need to have a clear apology saying "my bad, we fooked up, sorry". Because they are clearly the ones in the wrong and by continuing to run a national style hate campaign will just drive away the remaining readers that they have.
