Katalinic Posted 6 February, 2010 Share Posted 6 February, 2010 If today taught us anything is it that you need to pick a team for the conditions/pitch so I don't think it is simple as to say "pick this team". On a decent pitch with a true surface then play wingers. On a pitch like Exeter's today then play narrow with battling players and in effect play "hoof it" football. If you've got quality in the side, hoofing it comes easy but when u need to play, u cant do that with just hoofers. That team wont lose u goals at set pieces as we have been doing AGAIN recently, u'l get the best out of players like Puncheon who favours outside to centre and James or Wotton coouldnt even begin to dream of doing the job Hammond does for us. Lambert would get even more goals with the pace of Papa alongside and talking of whom, Papa would be lethal if played upfront feeding off quality of Puncheon and Lallana. Could be wrong of course, but dont think I am.

The set piece goal was poor and at the worst possible time. Totally agree about Hammond, we really miss him.

Avenue Saint Posted 6 February, 2010 Author Share Posted 6 February, 2010 James not even in the squad i'm not to sure about that sorry mate, besides the odd goal and a half decent peg. dont rate him. Influenced too many games at start of season where ball would come out to him n then 9 times out of 10 diagonal ball to Lambert, who the opposition defence had been expecting since xmas b4! Not conducive to encouraging playing it ont the deck. Get him, a gun and put him in front of Wenger, ..he would get shot!

If Jaidi was playing alongside Fonte, we wouldnt have lost that set piece goal. like the other day. Hopefully its a time game n they need to understand each others game. But jaidi a million times better, no doubt. Otsemobor hasnt set the world alight n remember that equaliser when player cut in n scored, he didnt tackle or actually do a lot else. but important thing is Thomas had been on fire until "fluid" in the knee. Gets stick but always liked Thomas. Think u need some1 like him in this league. In the end of the day, everyone is gonna have opinions n mine aint any more valuable than your's but just frustrating when u see things happen in games when u know, probability says they could have been avoided. Saint_clark Posted 6 February, 2010 Share Posted 6 February, 2010 A million times better? Sorry, but you've just discredited your whole argument for me. You want to alter that? Hammond injured, Connolly injured, Jaidi rested because needed for next 2 games, Fonte cup-tied on Saturday, Puncheon cup-tied Tuesday (and Saturday?). Some people just don't get it. Get this week out of the way and you might start to see a settled team. But in the end that team will be Davis, Otsemobor, Fonte, Seaborne, Harding, Lallana, Hammond, Schneiderlin, Puncheon, Lambert, Barnard, with James and Connolly as backup. CitySaint Posted 6 February, 2010 Share Posted 6 February, 2010 I don't think Pardew knows his best team, but one thing is for sure he thinks Lloyd James should be in it, wherever he needs to fit him in. I think Lloyd is a decent player, but not good enough to change the team to accommodate him. Jaidhi Should play in my opinion, and I would agree with the team above. Although David Connolly should play when fit (if ever) and I wouldn't give up on Lee Barnard yet, the guy is a proven goalscorer at this level. Whatever happens, we should be winning more games and playing our strongest team, that includes Wayne Thomas above Otsemobor (who I think was a strange signing). Saint_clark Posted 6 February, 2010 Share Posted 6 February, 2010 Who would people have honestly played instead of James today? Wotton? With a fully fit squad he would be on the bench. And in midfield he is not as bad as people make out.

Also remember, when we went on our winning run in the Autumn/Winter, Wotton was playing. Although I'm not saying he is good, just would have done a job for this particular match. Dr Who? Posted 6 February, 2010 Share Posted 6 February, 2010 I do think this is the best time as ever to try new players and tactics out. We are not going up, and we are not goong down! Start of next season he will know his best 11 and will take it from there. Every supporter knows the best team... that is what makes football so great!! Singeon Sears Posted 6 February, 2010 Share Posted 6 February, 2010 I believe Hammond is injured? As for Jaidi if he played today he would struggle for the mid week game, and isn't Seabourne cup tied for that?, if so today's defence made sense. The only position that I really get annoyed about is up front where Papa should be playing every week, to see him on the bench or out wide amazes me. At this level central defenders have proved now that they have no idea how to cope with him.

SFC Forever Posted 6 February, 2010 Share Posted 6 February, 2010 we have a squad full of attack minded players and a manager that is negative in his thoughts. Genk Posted 6 February, 2010 Share Posted 6 February, 2010 Not sure about Thomas at RB. For me you have to weigh up: Do you want Thomas for the defensive side of the game or play James there for going forward with his good passing. It's a tough one but I would have one of these two ahead of Otsemebor based on the games I have seen him in. Pardew's team today will have been based upon thinking ahead to Tuesday and then Saturday because of cup tied players etc, so he is trying to utilize his squad. Pretty much did start with that line-up, although with Puncheon cup-tied we had Antonio in on the right, with Lallana in on the left. Think Jaidi and Fonte were in reverse order to your line-up. You got Bart and Holmes right on the bench. Not bad at all considering you were asking for your line-up for last Saturday.
