Nineteen Canteen Posted 14 February, 2010 Share Posted 14 February, 2010 Tuesday night we allegedly saw the best of Waigo and yet yesterday against better opposition and a pressure cooker atmosphere we saw the opposite although on both games he made glaring misses. For all his industry he comes across as more showpony than a striker with a killer instinct for goal and some of his misses in and around the 6 yard box have been unforgiveable at any level and cost us games. With Lambert taking set pieces from it seems anywhere apart from our own 18 yard box it is important we have another striker with pace and the same killer instinct in front of goal as the man hmself. The problem with Connolly out (IMO our best option) and Barnard as bright as a 'nitelight' (WTF was he doing taking a certain goal from Lallana'a toes) Waigo seems to be our best option. However, I firmly believe he can only serve us best from the bench to mix it up when we need it otherwise his propensity when he starts to miss chances that frankly any U9 worth his/her salt could hit with a bit more power and accruacy. Waigo is to inconsistent and lightweight and flatters to deceive not unlike a few others from our recent past we could mention

Andy_Porter Posted 14 February, 2010 Share Posted 14 February, 2010 One of our most important players. We couldn't score untill he rocked up. Waigo and Antonio should be playing every game, I'd get Mills in at left back as well to offer another pacey attacking threat. I would however prefer to see us play 4-5-1 with out current group of players.
Supersubpuckett Posted 14 February, 2010 Share Posted 14 February, 2010 Agree - not a clever footballer. Gets into good positions but ****s it up - reminds me of bwp. Missing one sitter is just about forgivable but missing two or three isn't.

Missing one sitter is just about forgivable but missing two or three isn't. It's very unfortunate for him that he missed a couple of sitters in such a high profile game. If he had knocked in one of those chances we'd all be singing his praises now. He isn't a clever footballer at all but he offers us pace, strength, work rate and industry which are all vital in this league.

Colinjb Posted 14 February, 2010 Share Posted 14 February, 2010 Good post. Currently I consider him an asset. He reminds me of a raw Kenwyne Jones, a real live wire who lacks composure and frankly, a bit of ability. However, he is a perfect impact player for the standard we currently play at, also his endeavour in defensive scenarios is a valuable asset, his removal from play and the inclusion of Owusu-Obeyie on Saturday was a definite turning point. He is an athlete first and foremost, not an out and out footballer. He is not young enough to be someone I could see properly developing into a consistent asset for the future. So, as I said, he is an asset right now, and thanks to his loan agreement, I doubt he'll ever be a liability.
Stu Man Do Posted 14 February, 2010 Share Posted 14 February, 2010 In responce to the question ... asset looked alot less likely to score once he had gone off. His pace alone creates opportunities and pressure that a Barnard wouldn't make. Not the finished article but certainly good enough for us at the moment. I look at the fact he is offside far less now than 3 months ago and all you can ask of young players are that they show improvements whilst doing a job which he clearly does. The only time he can put in a decent delivery is if he uses his hands. Personally I don't think we should bother with the long throws, especially when he trots off to the left hand side to take them. We never look threatening from them at all. His delivery is hit and miss however he would have picked up an assist from one of his crosses if we could finish, I think he put one straight on Lallana's head. Andy_Porter Posted 14 February, 2010 Share Posted 14 February, 2010 Waigo is pacey and attacking but a threat? What is his goals to shots / ratio? Him just being the pitch scares defenders and teams into playing differently. When we leave Antonio and Waigo on the bench we're too predictable, Millwall away is a perfect example we had a team with no pace at all and didn't look like scoring all game. Doesn't amount to much though does it with we don't score and that is our biiggest problem - we don't take the chance we ceate and Waigo is guilty more than most. Our biggest problem is that we struggle to control and dominate games in midfield, not taking chances. Yesterday was the first time we've really struggled to finish. Saint Billy Posted 14 February, 2010 Share Posted 14 February, 2010 Jury is out for me on this, Waigo for me has the same flaw in his game as Lallana and that is in front of goal. Don't get me wrong, both have huge potential, but someone needs to show them how to put the ball in the back of the net especially when there is only the goalkeeper to beat. The reason we lost yesterday is because these two did not finish very good chances.
Tamesaint Posted 14 February, 2010 Share Posted 14 February, 2010 Waigo is pacey and attacking but a threat? What is his goals to shots / ratio? I guess that people who consider him a liability were not at our last home league match against Stockport. He transformed the game when he came on with 25 minutes left. No idea about goals / shots ratio but with 8 goals from 15 starts (and 12 sub appearances) his goal scoring record is not that bad.

John Boy Saint Posted 14 February, 2010 Share Posted 14 February, 2010 I like him, his elastic legs get the opposition players in a bit of a kerfuffle he has pace and ball control and contributes well. All of this nonsense about him being offside too often in league 1 showed yesterday when having sprung the trap he looked at the lino to find that having a prem linesman who could keep up with play and keep his flag down. A luxury in League 1 we can afford, and we should enjoy the excitement he gives most of the crowd when running towards the oppo's penalty box. doddisalegend Posted 14 February, 2010 Share Posted 14 February, 2010 I like him, ok he looks like Bambi on ice skates some times and he's never going to be EPL level but at league one he is an asset. Lets face most league one players are just that league one if they were any good they would play at a higher level. The thing is no matter how akward he looks things seem to happen with Papa on the pitch. He's got speed (which most of the team don't) and he seems to get into good postions to score, even if his missed some sitters if he keeps getting into the right postions he'll score more. He is also the top scorer in the JPT so he is in part responible for our trip to wembly and for that alone I like him.
callysaint76 Posted 14 February, 2010 Share Posted 14 February, 2010 The whole team plays better when Papa is playing; he stretches the play giving more space to Morgan, Lallana and Lambert. Notice how Lamberts form has improved since Waigo came back into the side.
Arizona Posted 14 February, 2010 Share Posted 14 February, 2010 Asset, but I'm really in two minds about his best possition. Up front he creates havok and makes room for Lambert, but his finishing can be eratic. On the right, he is good but seems to have little impact against better oposition. He was appaling at Leeds for instance. I'd keep him simply because he's a bit different. Antonio I'd say is a must keep and will be brilliant one day. He already is brilliant on occasions, but with time he will improve his composure and consistency.

St Landrew Posted 14 February, 2010 Share Posted 14 February, 2010 (edited) Question has already been asked before. We even had a poll about it. I do wish people would actually remember the results of things debated, especially when a poll is involved, because otherwise what is the f***ing point..? BTW, the answer to the question was: Yes, we think he's an asset and we want him to stay. http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=19336 Edited 14 February, 2010 by St Landrew Repeat of earlier thread
