Anyone know whats happened to him? I know the Echo revealed he had been training with the squad but theres been no mention of him in Switzerland or training with the U18s (+Pulis) and I presume with the signings of Richardson and Butterfield that there is no space for him in the squad. Anyone know anything or if he is training with a new team?

I think we offered him the use of our physios and fitness facilities to help him overcome his injury, but obviously due to the severity of his injury he can't actually do any proper training, hence why no mention of him.

FWIW I think he's finished.

As someone above mentioned, a mediocre career as a local pundit for league teams in the South awaits..........

He was at the Basingstoke game to day as a spectator. Chatting to fans and some of the basingstoke players at half time. I think he lives in the basingstoke area. I should have gone up and asked him what is situation was but didnt. Sorry. He is definantly alive though!

He was indeed. I was with him for a while and had a good chat with him about his medical situation/fitness. Great bloke. Signed numerous autographs and had pics taken with everyone's wife/daughter/dog. Do you wanna know what he told me? I want to build up the suspense first. :)

You've had 5 minutes of suspense. Which is more than X Factor, Big Brother and Britain's Got Talent combined on a final night - just tell us what he said. I'm guessing with Richardson and Butterfield signed he will retire due to injury and work for the BBC or go into coaching or play for a lower to mid table League One side etc etc

I need more drama than 5 mins worth :). Anyone else want to make a prediction?

Martin will head up the Technical Coaching Team including Jason Dodd who will coach the Under-18s and our new Under-16 and Under-14 coaches who are soon to be appointed.

Would requite Murty to have coaching badges to be offered the job. Maybe he does.

Oh actually you're getting farther ahead than the man himself.

He said his recovery is going well. He starts running this week and will train with the Club if all goes well.

I mentioned the rumour that Richardson had picked up an injury in Switzerland and he said he hadn't heard that, but would get up to speed on Monday. I said we (or more exactly) I still saw a place for him in the Saints setup even with Danny Butterfield coming in too. And guys, he didn't know about the Butterfield signing ... and yes, he commented that would push him down the priority list, and he did feel that maybe with 2 RBs in front of him, that could be the end of his hope that AP could make him an offer. We talked about it (Butterfield) being only a year's contract but GM said that's normal for a 30 yo. Year by year. GM said he would take anything, pay as you play, just to get back.

In answer to "what will you do if you don't make it back?" he sighed and said "I haven't thought that far ahead; I'm just focusing on recovering".

As for the guy himself, he looked lean and younger than when I'm sat in the Chapel! Also not that tall a guy, only my height. Impressed me much - very open, friendly, approachable, had photos with the fans, signed their programs. Yeah, hope we can use him in the coaching setup, if he doesn't get a playing contract.

I pretty sure he was released along with all the others. Not entirely sure where these rumours of otherwise would have come from. He is ancient and crippled. Even in he does recover from his current injury, I am 99% sure we wont see him in a Saints shirt again.

Can't agree with that. After seeing make-do's covering RB, I was pleased to see Murty playing well, good in defence, getting up in support of the attacks, and vocal, organising the defence. He definitely added value, and although the balance of probablility is that we won't see him again in a Saints shirt (playing) I am still hoping that we will. He told me he would take ANYthing we offer. While he was signing a few autographs, his brother-in-law with him said he was just desperate to play again, hopefully for us, for even for Basingstoke. He feels he has a little more playing time, and I wouldn't argue with that.

Having a chat with a player doesnt make you his agent !!!!

Id offer him a pay as you play deal, no loss to anyone then

Really don't see any point in that what-so-ever. There isn't anything to be gained by having a 36 year old cripple in your squad, regardless of how much or little he is paid.

Disagree. Surely a pay-as-you-play deal would be benefitial for both parties - Murty gets back training and in the squad again which is what he wants, and Saints have an experienced back-up defender who isn't costing them very much at all and who is vastly experienced and vocal and will benefit everyone in the squad just by being around. A character like Murty is important as he will help the youngsters and add some squad depth etc., I think a pay-as-you-play deal will be great for both us and Murty himself if he wants to stay with us!

There would be no problem with Murty coming back on a PAYPlay deal if he gets fit again. He was a good RB for us and could do a good job of cover for the next few months actually.

Are we actually talking back-up here, because I'd say he was just more like squad fodder. To me back-up means someone who can come in and fill a gap when a first team regular is unable to play. Murty was fit for all of 9 games last season and I see no reason to think he will do better when he's another year closer to 40. Why have back-up which is only back-up for 1/6 of the season?

To me it would be like giving Pulis a 5 years PAYP deal and saying, 'what's the harm, if he isn't playing it doesn't cost anything'.

Admin man isn't a by-word for "happy clappy man who likes everything." I'm not trolling, that's my honnest opinion. We're supposed to be aiming high here. I just can't see Murty lending any progress to the promotion campaign.

I meant your description of him as "a cripple", which is normally used as a derogatory term or insult. For my money we took equal chances on Murty and Connolly, one worked out, one didnt.
