you dont have an agenda....but it quickly decends into a farce and start comparing NC with a facist dictator..or even suggesting working at SMS is like working in north korea..

lol

that was the view from an employee at the club, not my opinion.

even if it is true....so what..? does that mean we wont win on saturday..?

nope, i'm not saying anything like that. All I'm saying is im not sure about how Cortese is going about things, i have no doubt that he has the club at the heart of his interests and works with the best intentions, but i just query if he's going about it in the right way.

But as you said, let's just get back to the flaming football.

Didn't we play Bayern Munich in January of some season? And wasn't that the Ted Bates Trophy?

yeh, first ever ted-bates trophy game.

we played it in the spare week between the league and fa cup 4th round, as we'd already been knocked out.

Whether you want the trophy or not, whatever their reasons may be for not having it, the main problem is that they haven't said anything either way that I've heard. Leaving fans wondering really isn't very fair, or sensible. It doesn't fit in with the 'just in it for the money' argument either. It just needs someone from the club to quickly explain why the game has been cancelled, or confirm there will or won't be one at a later stage. I always thought an end of season game would work well. Perhaps to celebrate promotion at the end of our 125th year? These reasons we could understand, but being ignored will just **** people off.

Precisely. Not sure I would be that bothered if they came out and explained why they were getting rid.

Hopefully stuff like this will be answered at the fans forum. Should be quite tasty and hopefully reassuring.

I will be asking all these questions should I be allowed to go to the fans forum. If I am prevented from going, I think that will say a lot about Cortese.

depends on why you get denied access....if it is because he has a select list of people he wants there..then yes, bang out of order..if you cant go because you simply could not get a ticket..then unlucky

Off topic but I saw in the paper today that the manager of North Korea is now working as a builder as punishment for not winning the world cup. I suppose if things don't go well this season AP won't be sacked but demoted to toilet cleaner at SMS as punishment for his faliure if NC really is Kim Jong-il in disguse:?

I agree. I will be able to get a ticket though due to my friend from Solent. I have been to every one so far and I was impressed with Cortese last year. I hope for a similar experience this year.

Very unfair on my mate Rupes who has been doing a sparkling job in the bogs since his demise......

I wouldn't bother questioning it, apparently you'd have an agenda...

Blantant attempt at trolling IMO

Its a real shame that the ted bates trophy hasn't been recognised this year. Wouldn't have been hard to just name the reading game it.

Perhaps they couldn't secure a decent oppo team to represent ? Or its been overlooked ? Either way a real shame

"Working for Lowe is awful, he's a pompous buffoon who thinks he's above everyone"...

"Working for Hone is awful, he's a ruthless mercenary"..

"Working for Cortese is awful... blah, blah, blah."

Listening to Benji is tedious, pointless Pollyanna

Does anyone really care about the Ted Bates trophy?

We have a statue for the guy, a meaningless friendly with an even more meaningless trophy at the end does nothing for me

I'm not too fussed about the trophy itself for those same reasons, but I would add the following caveats:

1. It gives the game a pseudo-competitive edge a week or two before the season starts, which helps the players, and also the fact that they're playing for a trophy will add a bit onto the attendance;

2. Assuming the TBT game is played against prestigious opposition (West Ham aside), it also serves as a good test for the team, and from my own perspective, I like to see us playing against the best players. Watching Luis Suarez tear us a new one in the second half was fantastic viewing, even though we ended up getting beaten. Prestigious opposition will always bring bigger crowds as well

If they're going to scrap it, that's up to them, but they could at least communicate that fact, if only to save them the questioning on the subject as a result of their silence. The timing this year in particular was somewhat "unfortunate", coming only a matter of weeks after the death of Ted's widow.

We're not having the Ted Bates trophy because it was instigated pre NC, just like we don't wear Red And White stripes anymore as they too were pre the savior.

Soon to come:

Out with 'the Saints' In with 'The Slayers'

Out with SMS, in with Twickenham

Out with 'Southampton', in with South London.

That might have been sarcasm, but you are probably not far from the truth there...

It wasn't sarcasm, and the rest, although tongue in cheek, wouldn't surprise me if it hadn't crossed NCs devious mind.

He is demonstrating a worrying lack of empathy with Southampton FC, it's fans, and it's heritage.

I'd love to know your logic behind that.

1) Obviously it is a reference to the sash you don't like. That is for 1 season. It is the 125th year, the club wore it 125 years ago. That is the heritage you crave rather than a lack of heritage.

2) As for the trophy. Why does the club continuingly have to have a game for Ted Bates. He has a good memorial for his great service in the form of the statue in a prominent position outside the stadium. Tacking his name to a friendly once a year does little. Just because a traditional has been started does NOT mean it is right for it to continue indefinitely.

We don't have to have the trophy. As I said, the worrying thing is not letting the fans know. It demonstrates a lack of respect IMO.

Letting them know what exactly? They don't want to have it. What more do you want them to say as a reason for not having it?

It wouldn't have been hard to come out and say that the Ted Bates trophy was not going to be competed this year IMO

I think a lot of the hatred of NC could have been avoided if he was to actually communicate the reasons behind doing some of his more bizare stunts.
