Where was you moments?

As I'm sat here during a boring workshop lunch break, everyone remembers where you was when that big news comes from your football club.

Cup win 76 - In my lounge surrounded by my spurs supporting family as they cheered saints home.

Keegan signed - Finished a paper round and I could see the excitement in my mums face as I walked in the door, Keegan has just signed for Saints she said... Gob smacked was my reaction.

Saints put the sixth past Man Utd when Egil scored- Outside some langdown flats doing a delivery as I was screaming with disbelief.

St Marcus passes away - Sat at home when I browse the forum and saw 350 users online, wow we have signed someone big I thought, but I was brought back down to earth.

Now that did hurt and still does.

One special moment for you - Last ever game at the dell as I was at someones wedding, some guest turned up in the evening with a bin liner of turf and a few plastic seats for me.

priceless!!

what about you as Saints will always hold a special place in all our hearts?

At home, cursing the fact that I was 17 and broke and couldn't get a ticket for the final even though I'd been to the Semi. Vowed then never to miss another final and have been back since for the Charity Shield, ZDS,League cup, FA Cup and of course the JPT :)

Keegan signed - Finished a paper round and I could see the excitement in my mums face as I walked in the door, Keegan has just signed for Saints she said... Gob smacked was my reaction.

At work in a factory in Chandlers Ford when my mate's dad who worked there and was always pulling my leg about Saints walked in and told me. Went straight out to my car and switched on the radio to find out for myself

Saints put the sixth past Man Utd when Egil scored- Outside some langdown flats doing a delivery as I was screaming with disbelief.

At Gatwick airport waiting for a flight. We took off around half time and I had to wait almost 2 days to get an english newspaper to check the result!

St Marcus passes away - Sat at home when I browse the forum and saw 350 users online, wow we have signed someone big I thought but I was brought back down to earth as that hurt.

Just got to my desk at work in Brisbane early in the morning. Spent the next hour reading all the tributes

One special moment for you - Last ever game at the dell as I was at someones wedding, some guest turned up in the evening with a bin liner of turf and a few plastic seats for me.

priceless!!

Whiteley shops Car park.....screaming my head off when LeTiss comes on and scores what was the winner!

what about you as Saints will always hold a special place in all our hearts?

All fantastic memories (except Markus of course)...thanks for bringing them back

Born in '92, so most of my "favourite memories" come before I even started high school. When we stayed up in 2008 vs Sheff Utd, I was returning from a swimming competition at Millfield in Somerset - and remember the exact section of this road to this day when BBC Radio 5 Live announced the final whistle had blown at St Mary's. For someone reading this who knows the South Devon area, its the road heading south off the A38 at Wrangton.

Seeing us lift the JPT with Markus behind and his digital camera was fantastic. I was right where I was now. In my bedroom at about 1am....... this same place was where I found out he died last week - someone told me on Facebook (horrible way to find out the news at about 6am!)

The only two I'm old enough to remember -

Putting six past Man U: Looking away from the TV when it said "Look away now if you don't want to know the scores." Then regretting it, so I asked my Dad and just laughed in disbelief.

Markus passing: Strange circumstance, on holiday in Devon and actually on my way to watch Torquay play Reading in the Carling cup. Got a text from a friend and just felt flat for the whole game. Even seeing Michail Antonio didn't cheer me up. SSN in the bar before the game confirmed it.

Cup win 76 - Not born...

Keegan signed - Not born...

Saints put the sixth past Man Utd when Egil scored- Had played golf and was round at a mates playing on Golden Tee and we went to watch Grandstand and there it was on the vidiprinter, 6th goal just come up. Mental.

St Marcus passes away - On the train back from Waterloo, as I am every day. Mate text me and all I replied was wtf???

One special moment for you - Going to the Mutley Crown when at Uni to watch us play Steaua on Eurosport. Had never seen us play in Europe before even though we lost. Also watching us in the 2nd leg of the playoffs in the Portsmouth bar on Koh Samui, having proper banter with the owner who gave us free drinks all night. Fair play to him for that.

Keegan Signing.

Walking out of school wondering what my mum ( and thousands of other mums it seems) was doing waiting at the school gates. They were all there waiting to tell all the little 10/11 year old Saints fans the news.

Markus passing

In car near Heathrow, Adrian Durham announced it on talksport.

Good thread! - the 6-3 vs United I couldn't make the game as I was at my wife's sister's wedding - in Manchester. Both bride and groom's families were big United fans. Me and a City fan were laughing our heads off at the reception as the scores were coming in - while the waiters spat in our food (probably)

It doesn't just have to be the 'big news' though

First win of the 'Great Escape' season in 98-99 was on Saturday 24th October - know the date as my daughter was born the night before. I was taking my boy to see his little sister for the first time just as the Saints were finally grinding out a win...

And at the other extreme - going to the first game of the 95-96 season at the Dell vs Notts Forest - Matty scored a hat-trick but we lost 3-4. I'd just been to the hospice at Ashurst to see my Dad - who died on the Sunday

'Special place' is right- that often infuriating team is with all of us at through all the ups and downs of life

(Phew - sorry if the above's a bit heavy - got a bit carried away there!)

Cup win 76 + Keegan signed - Born in 1991 :(

Saints put the sixth past Man Utd when Egil scored - Was only, what, 5 years old, but I remember watching the highlights at my old house in Netley.

St Marcus passes away - At work with my Saints-mad manager, he tells me that on his home computer the OS looks different, so we log on the office computer and load up the OS and the news that Markus has passed away has been on there for just a couple of minutes. We sat there shocked for about five minutes, the rest of that shift was horrible.

One special moment for you - Seeing Saints lift the JPT at Wembley - First time I'd ever been to new Wembley, first time I'd ever witnessed first hand Saints in a final, and first time I'd ever seen us lift some silverware. That, or sitting with my West Ham supporting Dad when we beat them 2-0 at St. Mary's.. Kevin Davies and Fernandes getting the goals. The bragging rights were all mine.

I was born in 1984, so sadly the cup win was not within my lifetime.

The 6-3. Just saw the scores coming in on Grandstand. Was overjoyed!

When news of Markus' death broke I was just driving back into Cov after a day's work. It was announced on Talksport at about 6.30. I'm not ashamed to admit shedding a tear.

Cup win 76 - In my lounge surrounded by my spurs supporting family as they cheered saints home. In my lounge watching it as i was told i was too young to go

Keegan signed - Playing football at the back of my house, Mum shouted over the fence he'd signed and the other kids and me were all Keegan for the rest of the game :)

Saints put the sixth past Man Utd when Egil scored- Playing football myself, we had a scratch team out and put 4 past Brendon FC with no reply. That night i met my future wife, so close to being a great day

St Marcus passes away - Ironing! (how life changes!) about 10pm switched onto Sky News to catch up on footy results to see that news!

One special moment for you - First game at St Marys, vs Espanyol. 8 of us got an exec box and drank our fare share, wandered round the ground after game finished, got into changing rooms to be confronted by Jim Joyce! not a great game, think we lost 4-3, but just to see us in our shiny new home was epic! something i'd never thought would happen after years of trying for planning permission at various places, Wide Lane etc. It finally came. It was emotional!

Cup win - Only 9 years old and I remember watching it with my Dad who was getting a tad excited, I couldn't understand what he was so excited about. I remember the parade the following day a lot better though.

Keegan - Walking home from school when someone pulled up in a car next to me, he asked me if I was a Saints fan, when I said I was he told me Keegan had signed and I'd probably remember this conversation for the rest of my life, I thought he was a nutter, but it turns out he was right on both accounts. When I got home Mum was hanging the washing out & I told here that some wierdo in a car had said Keegan had signed, she just said "yeah I know, your Dad'll be pleased".

Saints Man U - Playing footy for Windsor at Millbrook Rec. I didn't find out until I got home.

Markus - Painting ceiling in the lounge. My youngest kept popping in to see how I was getting on, and I was getting a bit annoyed with him. Then I hear "Dad, Dad!". I replied with "for gods sake what do you want now". He said "Markus Leibherr has died, we haven't got an owner anymore". I just stood stunned for a few seconds, and asked if he was making it up. Sadly he wasn't.

thing that sticks out on this thread is how many on here are young!!

of all those the most shocking one for me was keegan - still find it hard to believe we signed the current european player of the year - can you imagine now the team finishing 14th in premiership, with a ground holding about 15,000, no big money - signing Messi!

interesting thread as it makes you realise that moments in sport really burn into your memory.

Six against Utd - Waterlooville high street.

Camara scoring the 4th against Norwich - Looe Bay.

The last great escape - driving through Wiltshire.

Keegan signing - I was at the Dell and Joan Murray told me out of the window of the commercial dept.

And as an aside, Elvis died on my paper round! - Daily Mirror plus Titbits magazine.

Fortunately I've been at more than I've missed but the association of places with events from afar will always be there.

'Well you scored 3 goals today' Another big cheer. 'And Southampton scored....6!' Hahaha, there was just my dad and me cheering with a look of disbelief on the Man U 'fans' faces. Heehee

Lasting memory of Supporting Saints was the away game in Marseilles losing game 2-1 but going through 5-2 on aggregate then after escaping a riot in the ground being on the coaches taking us back to the airport after the game where all the coaches were stoned by Marseilles fans mosts of the way to the airport many of their fans on on mopeds !

Top thread!

FA Cup win 1976 - at home in Bishopstoke (SO5 4BW was there too, extremely drunk on Gale's Prize Old Ale - probably why he didn't mention it in his post above!). I remember going out in Southampton that evening and it was just amazing.

Keegan signing - I got back to my hall at university and a friend (who had little interest in football) told me. My immediate reaction was to assume he was taking the píss and tell him to eff off!

Heard the end of the 6-3 match on the radio, relishing more and more the thought of seeing my Man Utd-supporting boss at work the following Monday.

Others - I'll always remember Nick Holmes' winner against Liverpool at the Dell in the 1982-83 season. Wonderful goal to win a superb match. Being at Dellhurst Park in 1999 - wasn't getting to a lot of games at that time, but I picked a good 'un there! Hearing that Blackburn had lost at home to Forest (who were long since relegated by then) as we left the ground was the icing on the cake. And the 5-0 game against Blackburn in 1978 - I only went by chance that day, but I starting going regularly after that.

Cup win 76 - At my Nans, supposedly having my 6th birthday party. Din't go too well as all the adults were ****ed.

Keegan signed - Got home from school and remember seeing the press conference when he walked into the room with Lawrie and Bally.

Saints put the sixth past Man Utd when Egil scored- In the Archers.

St Marcus passes away - Phone call from my dad, still can't believe it.

One special moment for you - Probably one of the defining moments in great escape seasons, all I'll say is Ken Monkou at Norwich. What a game.

what about you as Saints will always hold a special place in all our hearts?

Cup win 76 - wasn't born sadly

Keegan signed - was only 5 at the time so don't remember it but i'd imagine at home

Saints put the sixth past Man Utd when Egil scored- In the Archers.

St Marcus passes away - working (it's all i seem to do these days)

FA cup final 2003 - severely drunk and wondering if the swaying was going to end with me falling down the very steep looking stands, followed by the thought i might have a heart attack when we almost scored. Or (yeah i know i'm choosing two) Le Tiss scoring the last ever goal at the dell, stood in the archers going absolutely crazy followed by on the pitch a few minutes later!

Cup win 76 - Not even thought of...parents were not even married!!

Keegan signed - Again not even born yet!

Saints put the sixth past Man Utd when Egil scored- Sat in my season ticket seat, aged around 14/15 i think in the family stand, downstairs, back row in line with the centre line. WHAT a game, still love it when they show the goals on premier league years every now and again.

St Marcus passes away - Was at work, phone is going mad in my pocket, 8 txts, 3 bbm messages and facebook inboxes...not a nice evening at work at all!!

One special moment for you - First ever goal i ever saw...Saints 1 Vs 0 Wimbledon (not sure what year, maybe 93/94), Le Tissier free kick, think it was Maddison who played it back to him, he flicks it up and volleys it into the top right corner...awesome!! What a guy.

All my moments are a bit more recent and a lot more naff. That I can remember...

Camara scoring against Norwich - Going balistic in my bedroom in Lincolnshire.

Getting relegated against Man Utd - In the living room on a lovely sunny day, but feeling like sh*t.

6-0 win against Wolves - The day after I moved to Phoenix, sat in the Lounge at goodyear airport watching the goals fly in on Sky sports website. Everyone was wondering why I was cheering and laughing my arse off.

Playoff semi at Derby - In a plane somewhere over the Arizona deserts. Left the airport 1-0 down to Darren Moore's goal, thinking it was all over. Got back to find out we'd lost on pens.

4-1 defeat to Palace in '07 - Similar story. Watched us go 2-0 down, Saganowski got one back. Left for a flight thinking we were back in the hunt. Got back and it was 4-1.

3-2 win against the Blades to stay up - In a friends car as we were driving through Northern France from Calais to Amsterdam. Managed to get 5 live on long wave. Went nuts when the final whistle went.

Markus passed away - Just sat at home chillin'. Andy Porter told me it had happened on Facebook messenger.

Then there's Colchester away last season, when I didn't have a clue where anything was.

I was at the 1976 cup final and so many other great games, the 6-3, the 9-3, the Dell last game there are so many. But there are also many headlines that we have read, seen on tv or heard on the radio that have had us in a frenzy of excitement or with our heads in our hands in despair. There are sad ones like the deaths of Markus, Ted, Ballie, Ossie and Bobbie that have shocked us, and bad ones like winning 3-0 at Everton and still getting relegated, The resignations of Souness and Hoddle and the return of Rupert. Here are a few of my favourite good ones.

Waiting for the teleprinter on Grandstand after hearing 3rd Division Saints were 2-1 up at Half time at 1st Division Man City. There was no way to get any further news. Then the result came through Man City 1 Southampton 5.

Being at the County Ground and seeing the Echo headline "Saints sign Tony Knapp" - a major show of ambition at that time.

Having the radio on in my site office at work when Peter Osgood signed. Although we new Saints were in for him it was expected he'd go to Stoke.

Coming out of work at 5.00 and turning on the car radio to hear the news on Solent. Hearing an interview with Kevin Keegan and thinking I must heve tuned to the wrong channel. Then hearing him say " and that's why I've signed for Southampton"

How did the car stay on the road?

How did I get home? the car must have driven itself.

!976 - Sitting in my flat in Sydney at 4am-ish recording BBC shortwave broadcast on my reel to reel taperecorder. Goal scored 913ft into reel.

St Markus death - On the tarmac getting of a flight from Basel, sent an SMS to say I'd landed, to get reply that Markus had died. Sent response "true?" with reply "sadly, yes", still stunned.

Saints put the sixth past Man Utd when Egil scored- Been in Ealing all day and got back to the car to hear the saturday sports report music followed by ' Newcastle put 5 past them last week , but Saints go one better !! Nearly crashed as I pulled out the car park !!

St Marcus passes away - Dad rang me as I sat down with my son, just got back from work...very sad day

Couple of others.....

The 4-1 win v Liverpool - I was working in Smiths on a saturday in Ringwood, and was walking home normally, but my dad had come to pick me up ! Thought this was strange, and he had to tell me we had just stuffed liverpool 4-1 !!

Benali scores-- In the bar at the Polish club in Slough after playing footy on the saturday afternoon - Teletext was on and the scorer came up as Benali ! I was in histerics and all the other guys could not understand why !!

76 and Keegan - wasn't even a wetdream in my father's mind.

Man U 6-3 - was in the lounge, listening to the game on solent (this was the era when solent had the legendary goal sound to mark a goal, though this game got full live commentary). Was allowed to open the creaky backdoor to the garden (usually a strict no-no) and run around as the goals flew in.

Le Tiss goal at the Dell - day before an important exam, so had to revise. was so pumped up by the audacity of that day's events and so spontaneously buzzing the next day that I coasted my exam - indeed, I got a prize off the back of it and a nice cash reward to boot- all thanks to saints and le tiss.

The big man passes away - just got off the phone with a mate, fatefully saying that this was the first year in my life that we had been favourites for anything (other than relegation) and checked the OS, hoping news of a new signing (with the nitty-gritty of the bournemouth performance still fresh in my mind). needless to say, I was still and am shocked.

Basically came of age as a Saints fan in the early 90s - only caught the end of Chris Nicolls reign, so the Branfoot era was the crucible in which most of my assumptions and anxieties were formed. Still remember waiting in the carpark of the Dell with my mother and brother after a nervy 0-0 draw against Coventy where, languishing at the bottom of the league, we had failed to break down their dour but solid 10 men. It was mid-February and felt like Siberia rather than Southampton but we waited a few hours for the players to come out with the aim getting a photo with Shearer (It was his first Saints game after his debut goal against France). He finally appeared but the photo mother took only managed to decapitate Shearer, leaving his head out of the shot and so it could have been anyone with two arms and two legs.

The only silver-lining was that my mother did take a picture-perfect snap of the eternally photogenic Ian Dowie :)

barry horne 1st of 2 goals v bolton in cup. It was deep into injury time with saints 2-1 down. He sent the game into extra time with a 30 yard screamer which had so much swerve on the ball the keeper had no chance.

watching the semi final against watford in the walkabout and got well and truly soaked.

watching saints at anfield and seeing the old kop stand when liverpool scored was immense. the crowd seem to all fall towards the bottom lol

marian pahars putting sainst ahead at stamford bridge in 4-2 win was awesome, it was so so cold that day.

i have the 89/90 season on vhs which I watch over and over again just to see Le Tiss chip Bryan Gunn in the Norwich goal - pure genius.

Cup win 76 - In my lounge surrounded by my spurs supporting family as they cheered saints home. - In the lower tier left side of the tunnel looking at the pitch at Wembley screaming like a looney

Keegan signed - Finished a paper round and I could see the excitement in my mums face as I walked in the door, Keegan has just signed for Saints she said... Gob smacked was my reaction. Just got home from college and switched the radio on to hear the press conference on Solent. Dropped my drink onto the carpet. Had to call a mate who worked at Ferranti - got him off some meeting and he called us C*** for joshing with him. He did apologise later

Saints put the sixth past Man Utd when Egil scored- Outside some langdown flats doing a delivery as I was screaming with disbelief. Working in Glasgow without access to a radio that day, never got to see MoTD as was driving home down the M6

St Marcus passes away - Sat at home when I browse the forum and saw 350 users online, wow we have signed someone big I thought, but I was brought back down to earth. On the sofa watching a movie when got the text, didn't recognise the number (was a TSW mate) left it 20 mins to check up here and slumped in total shock and started spreading the sad news around other ex pats.

Now that did hurt and still does.

One special moment for you - Last ever game at the dell as I was at someones wedding, some guest turned up in the evening with a bin liner of turf and a few plastic seats for me. I had been trying to beg borrow or steal a ticket to the game. One came up on the Wednesday. I dropped everything took a week off work, told the middle kid I wouldn't be able to watch him in the School play and booked an airmiles ticket on BA. "Stood" in the Milton behind the goal and cried like a loon when he scored the goal. Met up with London Saints mates and went to their end of season party at Chicago Rock, bought Doddy a beer, MLT told me I must be mad as he autographed my boarding pass and Rupert said - well done for making it back. Paul Jones called my then GF in Dubai on my mobile and chatted her up gave her a shock as she thought he had the best bum in football - as you say Pilchards - Priceless

priceless!!

what about you as Saints will always hold a special place in all our hearts?

Other most favourite moments? Stopping in Gent on the way to Anderlecht and singing OWTS as we took off from Gatwick in the Travel Club chartered British Caledonian 707 on the way to Marseilles (40 quid for the day trip inc the match tickets and coach transfers - THOSE were the days)

Thanks Pichards put a smile on my face with the memories

Cup win 76 - In my lounge surrounded by my family and numerous friends of my dad. Will always remember one of said friends (Ron) was having a leak when the goal went in. He thought we staged the cheer to wind him up.

Keegan signed - Found out when I got home from school.

Saints put the sixth past Man Utd when Egil scored- screaming like a loony in the West stand.

St Marcus passes away - Saw it on the OS when doing my daily check to see if we had signed a new player.

Special moments - In the archers watching Shearer score his debut hat-trick against the Arse; Mark dennis being shown a red card as he was being carried off the pitch, unconscious, on a stretcher; in the Milton for Keegan's best goal that never was; in the Milton for the 8-2 win over Cov.

thing that sticks out on this thread is how many on here are young!!

of all those the most shocking one for me was keegan - still find it hard to believe we signed the current european player of the year - can you imagine now the team finishing 14th in premiership, with a ground holding about 15,000, no big money - signing Messi!

The ground held 24000 in 1980 cos we still had terracing

Only 19 so sadly I wasn't around to see Saints lift the FA Cup or Keegan sign but....

JPT win - At Wembley

Saints 4 3 Norwich - Listening on the radio in my room while playing GTA Vice City. Don't think I've ever cheered so loud when Henri Camara (whatever happened to him? He still at Stoke?) put it past Rob Green.

Palace 2 2 Saints - Just a week after Norwich, I was at Eastleigh while Saints played at Selhurst. Eastleigh won promotion to the Confrence South and last everyone had heard Saints were 2-1 down and down to 10 men. The announcer at Eastleigh said after the final whistle there "And from Selhurst it's Crystal Palace 2 Saints.............................2" and everyone went mad.

Administration - Was sat in College in a lecture when my Newcastle supporting friend texted me saying "Saints have gone into admin and face a point deduction, bad times" I was so ****ing p1ssed off with the FA. I was in a foul mood for the rest of that day.

Another moment that sticks in my head but not quite an "I was there moment" was the 4-3 win over Birmingham City in 2006. I remember it being stopage time and they'd brought on DJ Campbell as a sub and my heart sank when the ball fell on his head. It eventually went over the bar and on to the roof of the net luckilly but from the time it left his head to the time it eventually landed on the roof seemed like 1000 years. It just seem to be in slow mo.

There's probably quite a few more but those are the ones that spring to mind off the top of my head.

Sorry to disappoint but Kevin Keegan is not the current european player of the year.

Cup win 76 - In my mates house with all the neighbours, as it was the only house in our street with a colour telly. After the game I have an abiding memory of car horns blarring all evening.

Keegan signed - My mate phoned me when I got in from school, turned on Southern and couldn't believe it.

Saints put the sixth past Man Utd when Egil scored- Milton Road End, yelling and very p!$$ed.

LeTiss last goal at the Dell- right behind the goal watched it all the way in, celebrated so much I thought I was going to have a heart attack.

St Marcus passes away - Dropped my son at football practice and his mate ran up and told me, gutted.

Special moments - In the Milton watching Shearer score his debut hat-trick against the Arse, some bloke in front of me lost his shoes as we surged down the terrace.
