Professor Posted 29 August, 2010 Share Posted 29 August, 2010 Refreshing the previous 'one more by Saturday' thread, as Saturday passed without one more. No mention of signings in Pardew's post-match interview, which was fair enough as he was being asked about the great performance at Bristol Rovers. From his earlier statements about signings before the transfer window closed, it sounded as if they were looking at a player or two on permanent deals, not just loans. With the transfer window closing on Tuesday will we be in the last day rush? Lallana and Lambert are already showing that injured players can't come straight back into the side and perform at top ability for 90 minutes, and with Richardson's injury making him the forgotten player at the moment, the need for genuine cover and for the wide MF that Pardew knows he needs, is becoming even more important. A loan or two might handle some of this, but at least one more addition to the permanent squad would increase confidence that injuries will not undermine us. Yes I was wondering whether AP's missed out on a couple this week and if he has anything up his sleeve. I also think loan signings are likely....I wonder who? Possibly you didn't read the item on the OS properly, but Harlee has been signed to join the development squad, not the first team. I don't think you'll find he's the replacement for Papa Waigo. MarkSFC Posted 29 August, 2010 Share Posted 29 August, 2010 Hopefully two more by Tuesday.....a striker (to put pressure on ALL 3 - and to ensure we have one on the bench if any of them get injured) and a proper right winger.
SnailOB Posted 29 August, 2010 Share Posted 29 August, 2010 Maybe Blackpools desperate attempts to find some players has scuppered a few of our deals ? We seem to be looking for the same prospects that Holloway is at the moment.

B Rabbit Posted 29 August, 2010 Share Posted 29 August, 2010 9/10 so far? What season have you been attending? Or not? 1 point from 2 home games whcih which we should have no business not winning.... And a fantastic performance and result yesterday by all accounts. 2 decent cup perfeomances-ish. Probably a 6/10 so far... We're just getting out of 1st gear it seems. Should have hit the start of the season in 5th.....

MarkSFC Posted 29 August, 2010 Share Posted 29 August, 2010 Should have hit the start of the season in 5th..... Cant agree with that....apart from Arsenals unbeaten season....no team can hit the start of the season in 5th and maintain for 46 games. We did start slow but are moving up the gears ( to use your phrase) quite nicely. its now a case of accelerating to maximum speed in the next game or two and cruising along at a hundred for many games...slowing down when the traffic gets a little busy and then finishing the race in 5th again..... We WILL be champions.....wiht a new striker and winger by Tuesday!!!!

For Rabbit I attend as many games home and away as possible and have been since BC I am sure we all want Sir Alan and his team to do well... Keep up the good work and reach for the stars our Saints.. Is that really true? Do you have any names in mind? I'm not persuaded there will be rich pickings from the 25 rule, but hope I'm wrong. I know some f***wit on here argued we might get Craig Bellamy a few weeks back. Are there any more credible targets though?

Lots of the teams with big squads will be looking to give their players who aren't in the 25 experience as they won't be allowed to play in the league

There is still the loan system if we can't organise something before the deadline, but if the right player becomes available I will be asking the club to sanction a signing." So there you have it in black and white We won't be ripped off, we know who we would like but if it doesn't happen then we have plenty of options with the loan window

SuperMikey Posted 29 August, 2010 Share Posted 29 August, 2010 We'll be fine. Pardew knows there are weaknesses in the team, he's said as much in numerous interviews, and we will make the necessary signing(s) to strengthen our weakest areas. There's a school of thought on here that we hare rolling in it and should just chuck cash as a club to get a player that we want. That's clearly not the way NC wants us to operate and that suits me just fine. There are plenty of players that will fit in with what we need, rather than get fixated with one player who's club don't want to sell for a reasonable price (i.e. Antonio). dubai_phil Posted 29 August, 2010 Share Posted 29 August, 2010 Perhaps he is referring to Antonio? Reading are probably trying to rip us off. PR can often be used for more than one reason. It can send a message to the fans or to a selling club. Unfortunately that doesn't fit into the world of those who only have Black or White tunnel vision. Off to the airport time. Looking forward to wearing my Saints shirt in downtown Glasgow tomorrow afternoon yeah right

You'd have to give chapter and verse on this one, because its an old trick to claim people are saying something they are not, and then to rubbish what is NOT being said. It may well be that Markus' illness was an obstacle to signing for a time, but it is still the case that our close season and transfer window signings of 3 FBs, plus Do Prado's loan, is less than most fans expected given the players who left. There is a stated intention to bring in at least one more permanent signing if the deal can be done and that does make discussion about the Tuesday deadline entirely rational as we all know its usual for there to be a glut of moves on the last day. We can put out a good team, Saturday's result showed that but Pardew has indicated that he wants to fill the role(s) covered last year by Papa and Antonio. That is not 'chucking money about', it is prudent team management. Injuries have also shown we can be vulnerable to losing key players, which is probably where a loan after Tuesday is more likely. Isn't that what Pardew has implied by what he has said?

I think that the point being made is that there may well be players we have tried/ are trying to get but clubs are asking more than we are willing to pay - hence the comment about not throwing money about and hence the lack of transfer action. Antonio is an example of this. We want him, we have valued him at a certain price, Reading want more, no deal, therefore no player.

Isn't that what Pardew has implied by what he has said? Pretty much agree with this. I have been disappointed with how thin our signings have been this Summer, but there may be very good reasons. It's also worth saying that its not quite three full backs plus Guly. Butterfield is cover for full back and CM rather than just an RB. Dickson can also do a good job at LM. Nevertheless, I was expecting a bit more "stardust" and had hoped/assumed that Papa and Antonio were both likely to be retained. Overall, I think the squad we have today is a tad weaker than the squad we had in May. But only a tad. And I still hold out some hope that it will look much stronger in 48 hours time.
