benjii Posted 8 November, 2010 Share Posted 8 November, 2010 Arguably, and it's naught but my opinion, David Hughes could have been one of our best midfielders, maybe even the best midfielder at the club. Unfortunately he always seemed to be injured. I bet he was no stranger to the treatment room! What do people think, Saints fans?
Rebel Posted 8 November, 2010 Share Posted 8 November, 2010 We all expected great things from Paul Tisdale and David Hughes - and when they played they both looked a bit special. But unfortunately for all of us a string of injuries ended both their careers early - so we will never really know

Guan 2.0 Posted 8 November, 2010 Share Posted 8 November, 2010 He was the best midfielder at the club when fit, no doubt. But he was always be back in the treatment room all too soon.
Shuggy Posted 8 November, 2010 Share Posted 8 November, 2010 Still remember his overhead kick goal at QPR in a night game, got into the game 5 minutes late because of the queues... Could have been a great player for us

Yeah, Guan 2.0, I think that's pretty much how I feel about it.
benjii Posted 8 November, 2010 Author Share Posted 8 November, 2010 Bit like Ronnie Ekeland (spelling?) Ekelund See, he was a funny one because he was the best midfielder at the club when fit, and he seemed fit, but someone, in their wisdom, obviously thought it wouldn't be long until he was back in the treatment room. You could say the same about David Connolly (a forward though, not midfielder).
benjii Posted 8 November, 2010 Author Share Posted 8 November, 2010 You could say the same about David Connolly (a forward though, not midfielder). It's funny, Ron, I was just watching the highlights of the Shresbury match and saw Connolly poach that goal and play a lovely one-two with Lallana and I thought to myself, "y'know, Benjii, he's possibly our best forward when he's fit. I'll wager he is more than adequately acquainted with the treatment room though. Which is a shame."
Badger Posted 8 November, 2010 Share Posted 8 November, 2010 I can recall a similar discussion about Hughes. On seeing him play someone next to me asked, "who is that short Welshunder21 midfielder with the dark curly hair, he is so dominant ?" He could have been the best midfielder at the club when fit, no doubt. But he was always in the treatment room .

georgeweahscousin Posted 8 November, 2010 Share Posted 8 November, 2010 They are on the ITV site. Hughes always showed promise, never had a real run in the side though.

paulwantsapint Posted 10 November, 2010 Share Posted 10 November, 2010 Hughes & Tisdale were part of a great reserve side in mid 90s that apart from a young Matt Oakley never became 1st teamers

Not sure if I remember the gates being closed at the end. I do remember Hughes getting a couple of goals and also rattling the post with a long range shot; we were in the upper tier front row for the game. What a player he could have been without the injuries.

Unfortunately he always seemed to be injured. I bet he was no stranger to the treatment room! What do people think, Saints fans? the only trouble with q. like this is that you have to judge the situation according to the era. the early Bates sides, the first Div 1 sides. The pre-Wembley and post wembley Lawrie Mac sides . the 1980-85 McMenemy sides (argueably the best era.) etc, etc, If you want to say the FASTEST player. The one-footed John Sydenham would have won hands down ...until Theo Walcott arrived. If you say the FITTEST... You'd have to look a long way to find candidates better than Huxford and Telfer.. who could run forever. ...and the TOUGHEST ...try John Mc Grath, Neil Ruddock..or Jim Steele...? Sadly David Hughes [/bwas one of the talented youngsters whose body let him down whilst his footballing brain was way ahead of many others of that era. rpb Posted 12 November, 2010 Share Posted 12 November, 2010 If you want to say the FASTEST player. The one-footed John Sydenham would have won hands down ...until Theo Walcott arrived. Jim Gallagher once told me that over 100 yards Derek Reeves was as fast as Sydenham - not that they ever had to sprint 100 yards on the pitch though...
