Guan 2.0 Posted 3 January, 2011 Share Posted 3 January, 2011 ...From the current squad? With Adam and Oxo both being linked with January moves, what other players from the squad can make the step up? The likes of Fonte obviously spring to mind.
Colinjb Posted 3 January, 2011 Share Posted 3 January, 2011 Davis Bialkowski Fonte Harding Dickson Mills Richardson Butterfield Chaplow Schneiderlin Chamberlain Lallana Puncheon Lambert Barnard Do Prado The definition needs to be more specific. There are many who could progress and step up, but who could help us push on even further?
Tony F Posted 3 January, 2011 Share Posted 3 January, 2011 I believe that the present squad is Championship quality already - awaiting a couple of final "squad player" pieces in the jigsaw. If we go up next season I suggest you should expect to see essentially the same faces for our first Championship game of 2011-12.
Dr Who? Posted 3 January, 2011 Share Posted 3 January, 2011 I think this team would do fine, and would be more suited to the Championship. Only time will tell, but lets get there first, as we have some tough games coming up.
Matthew Le God Posted 3 January, 2011 Share Posted 3 January, 2011 You only need to look at how Leeds, Norwich, Millwall, Jason Puncheon, Simon Gillett and Joseph Mills are doing in the Championship to see there isn't a large gap in quality between the leagues. benjii Posted 3 January, 2011 Share Posted 3 January, 2011 Quite right MLT. There is no one in the team who would be out of their depth.
John Boy Saint Posted 3 January, 2011 Share Posted 3 January, 2011 I also think many faces in this team would do well in the Championship, but as has been said already first we need to get there, and increasingly we will come up against stubborn teams tactics set up to primarily stop us scoring heavily against them. Take Oldham last season when the play off dream finally came to an end, up to that point we had built up a head of steam, Oldham turned up with the sole intention not to be battered. That night was the first time in a long time that I had seen Saints throw the kitchen sink at a side (probably every kitchen sink in Hampshire), and we ended up being thwarted. We have the firepower and the ability, we just need to ensure we have the guile to make it and see who is good enough.

Only time will tell, but lets get there first, as we have some tough games coming up. Tough games coming up? Not really. Oldham, Notts County, Tranmere, Charlton, Exeter. The only tough one there, on paper, is Charlton. Anything less than 10 points and I'll be disappointed.

Saintandy666 Posted 3 January, 2011 Share Posted 3 January, 2011 I disagree. He is good at getting forward and he works hard. I just don't think he has the positioning sometimes. Either way, we need someone better than him if we want to finish top of the championship.
Smirking_Saint Posted 4 January, 2011 Share Posted 4 January, 2011 Oldham will b tough.. They were unbeaten at home till today Exeter are pretty good at home and Notts county are mounting a mini revival ATM, there are no really easy games. But Dickson is the future.
VectisSaint Posted 4 January, 2011 Share Posted 4 January, 2011 The only player in the 1st team squad who will not make it in the Championship is Jaidi, not because he is not good enough, but because his legs won't take it for another season. Thats why we need to be looking for another CB to play alongside Fonte, not for this season but for next. Everyone else we have is more than capable of top half at least Championship finish. Cabrone Posted 4 January, 2011 Share Posted 4 January, 2011 Lallana, Lambert, Fonte, Chaplow and AOC are definitely Champ players. The rest may or may not be able to step up to the plate but there's no-one who I'd say is absolutely not champ standard (apart from those at the end of their careers). If this squad can make the jump then stick with them and add a couple of new players. We'd soon see who was good enough.
forever a red and white Posted 4 January, 2011 Share Posted 4 January, 2011 how about players that won't cut, IMO of course; Hammond, Jaidi, Seaborne (in time maybe). If we go up I hoenstly believe we wil need a centre back of a much higher quality, a proven championship forward at least. Don't forget, there will be arguably stronger teams coming down from the Prem next season as it is an absolute lottery atm. Anyway, lets get there first! Junior Mullet Posted 4 January, 2011 Share Posted 4 January, 2011 We have a better squad by far than the squads we had for the last two CCC seasons. We could defo hold our own with this current squad. You only have to look at Norwich who we beat several times last year to see that with the right team spirit and aptitude we could actually push for promotion next season. There haven't been many changes to the Norwich squad form last year. Good spirit and the right manager can go a long way.

He looked a real prospect earlier in the season It's a curious situation, no? He isn't available for loan (at least you would think he isn't given how quickly the likes of Wally Lancashire were snapped up) but isn't near the first team at the moment either. Only one injury from being on the bench so no wonder he is not out on loan.
