Should we try to win the FA Cup?

It is obvious that nearly all clubs are now treating this competition with disdain.

Premier League reserve sides are probably the equivalent of a half decent Championship side.

We are at least as good as a half decent championship side (see Norwich and Leeds).

This opens up an incredible opportunity for a club like ours to take this competition seriously and put out our strongest side to progress some distance.

The down side is this potential 'distraction' - I don't buy that. Chelsea didn't appear distracted from winning the league when they won both the FA and League Cups. And then there is the risk of injury - but then a jar a mayonnaise could put you out for six weeks... ;)

The up sides for me are:

More money into the club

More exposure to encourage new fans

More opportunity for our players to play better opposition

We might actually go a long way in the Cup...

I agree. I think now that we have got this far we should play our best team (bar players that need a rest). If we start slipping down the table I may start to feel differently though.

Arsenal away i'm crossing my fingers for. Or even at home. Would love to see Walcott back!

If we have a run that would be great, good for the money coming in. However lets not get ahead of ourselves I would rather win the league and go out next round if I was offered it. This year is about getting promotion and a cup run is a bonus.

We should try to win every game with the strongest side. But if or when, we get knocked out we should look at the bright side of being able to concentrate on the league.

Potential injuries aside, I can't see a down side to a good cup run.

When was the last time a third flight team got to an FA Cup final?

I don't think we should 'try to win' the cup in the sense of making it the focus of our attention but if it happens as a natural by product of consolidating our position in the top 2 then, hey, why not win the damn thing...as long as it doesn't become a priority then there is every chance the positives will outweigh the negatives. (but let's not polarise the argument by saying there are ONLY positives or ONLY negatives of a prolonged cup run. It could work either for us or against us)

you'll be amazed how clubs take it seriously once they get to the quarters...

never in a month of sundays will we be able to win the FA cup this season and dont think we should bust a gut to try.

That's true but given a fair draw we could end up not playing a decent side until the last 16 when the remaining Premiership clubs get serious. I think this is what my hope is - winning it is highly unlikely.
