Saints only lose on a Saturday when there is no preceding midweek league fixture

There is a pretty full League One programme tomorrow night but Saints are not playing.

Which got me thinking....

I've had this suspicion for a while now that Saints generally play better when we have two league games per week rather than one - just a gut feel.

So, I had a quick look at our results and my hunch is fairly accurate, in that we've never lost a Saturday league game following a midweek league game, whereas we've lost 4 Saturday league games when we've had no preceding midweek league game. (I've purposely ignored cup games)

So, my somewhat tenuous conclusion is that we are well equipped to handle the plethora of 'double-game' weeks looming on the horizon....once we've lost to Rochdale on Saturday of course.... ;-)

Actually this is complete rubbish. Whether or not Saints win is entirely down to whether I turn left or right when I come up the stairs into the stand. If I turn right we win. If I turn left, we lose - unless I remember to step off with my left foot. HTH

EDIT: I haven't worked out the pattern for when we draw. Sorry.

You lot....I don't know....I spend an entire 4 minutes doing some indepth research and all I get in return is mock, mock, mock.

You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

You'll be bowing at my feet in awe at my intellectual prowess when we lose again on Saturday....

I'm not mocking, I genuinely am suffering from Tikka withdrawl. It's a serious problem.

And if we win?

Now you've done it. We only win when we expect to lose and we are awful when we expect to walk it. Now you've gone and done a double negative Goddam you, I'm now gonna have to find my 24 year old Jesters hat, green silk handkerchief only karp in the downstairs loo and not shave until Saturday

Excellent, are you going or can I find you somewhere in town on saturday to point and laugh?

A weekend of frottage on the Northern Line

I'm not sure if I'm too nice or stupid, but I had to look that up. That's isn't a question by the way so please don't answer it.

I have missed 5 games this season, all of which have been defeats. I can't make either of the next 2 games, but should be on for the rest of the season. Make of this what you will.

Quick everyone chip in for a couple of tickets for this man, so that the deviant powers of Football karma are fooled into believing that he will be present and grace us with a win!.......................................................... of course no one can factor for that chap in block 18's lucky underpants finally falling apart in the washing machine yesterday afternoon at about half past 1!!!

We didnt lose Saturday and had no game on Tuesday.... doesnt really tie in

I was highlighting a trend (based on an underlying gut feel) rather than a cast-iron certainty.

The observation being that we only seem to lose a Saturday game if we haven't played midweek. And we've never lost on the Saturday following a mid-week league game.

Which gives rise to the theory that the team is more suited to playing twice a week than once a week (in terms of league games).

That is all.

But as we have only played a handful of mid-week games this season compared to a fair-few Saturday games your theory is well.... baseless crap, mere coincidence .:scared::scared: because of the sample size.If you go back to August/ September when we lost to Swindon midweek in the JPT we also lost on Saturday to Rochdale.

Ssshhhhh.....I'm trying to turn a hunch into nailed-on fact. It would be a first for The Saintsweb Forum so keep the shortcomings under your hat for now if you don't mind. cheers

A very common procedure, many undergraduates(and even graduates) seem to do this when they've balls'd up experiments and field studies, they try to explain their useless data with all sorts of cock-eyed(and oft risible) theories.:smug:

I think he suggested a pattern, not a law.

I'm less confident after a week's break actually. I think we get complacent and lose focus all too often. We didn't slip up saturday but we certainly didn't perform. Overall I'm just annoyed we can't put together a proper winning run. In this league, it isn't unrealistic to hope for a winning run of 8 or 9 games. Amazingly, that would be a club record. We just never seem to have the mentality for it, whoever the players are and whoever the manager is.

My biggest fear of winning 6-0 was that it was a peak steretypically followed by a slump, which is exactly what happened.

Actually it is. The best winning run so far this season is 5 by Charlton (and they are currently on 4). Only 4 other teams have managed 4 wins in a row just once each, US, Brighton, Hartlepool, and Brentford.

And just a point of note, Rochdale are currently on a 10 game unbeaten run....6 wins and 4 draws!!!

COULD it be that when we have no midweek fixture our Sat opposition also have no midweek fixture.

We have shown over this season and last that when oppostion sides play at "100 mph" (i.e. mark tight in midfield, knock balls over our defence and generally play at a high tempo) that we get less time to get the ball down and pass it.

If the opposition have had a midweek fixture they are less likely to play at a high tempo for 90mins on Saturday.

So it may depend on whether the opposition have played midweek rather than us ? just a thought I have no data to support that.

Simple explanation. They generally play so f**king awful mid-week that they come out on the Saturday trying to make amends.

I would be interested in knowing what our record on the Saturday is following a good win mid-week. I bet we most often lose the Saturday game.

I've noticed that we play f@cking well midweek!

current midweek form played 6, won 5, drawn 1, lost 0, for 19, against 3

Indeed. Which, as per my insightful opening post, leads me to conclude that the forthcoming plethora of double game weeks should work in our favour.

In theory...
