Rory Posted 18 February, 2011 Share Posted 18 February, 2011 Hi chaps. Unless I'm mistaken, has James Beattie got a 100% penalty taking record for Saints? Anyone know how many he took? I loved his walk away, turn, run and score routine.

Barry the Badger Posted 18 February, 2011 Share Posted 18 February, 2011 Made up for it 2 seasons ago didn't we. Letting DMG near a penalty was slightly mental, and of course Best, Idiakez, Wotton. That Watford game when both DMG and Wotton failed to score them was one of the most depressing games I've ever been to.

lambertsrightleg Posted 18 February, 2011 Share Posted 18 February, 2011 I once saw Jim Magilton miss a penalty. Home to West Ham at the end of 96/97. We won 2-0, Slater and Mickey Evans who chested the ball in and headed the post. Dodd was sent off towards the end if i remember rightly
Lighthouse Posted 18 February, 2011 Share Posted 18 February, 2011 Surman, Wotton, Euell, Dmg, II, Best and John have all missed penalties for us in recent years. Rasiak missed one in a cup game but knocked in the rebound after 3 attempts. After Rickie, Vignal is probably the best since Beattie and Pahars left. Also though Skacel looked pretty good (only took 1 and a couple for Hearts I think) no idea how he ended up behind DMG in the pecking order that season. Probably just the club trying to make him look slightly less garbage after loaning out everyone else.
benjii Posted 18 February, 2011 Share Posted 18 February, 2011 That Watford game when both DMG and Wotton failed to score them was one of the most depressing games I've ever been to. This. So much more talent and ability than them but managed to lose comfortably due to set pieces.

Bucks Saint Posted 18 February, 2011 Share Posted 18 February, 2011 I saw MLT miss his only pen...what do i win ? not sure if the live in-game betting market existed at the time of that miss, but i would have put £10k on MLT knocking in the simple rebound. And lost of course.

treggs23 Posted 18 February, 2011 Share Posted 18 February, 2011 Bravest goal ever. Good cross, but most strikers wouldn't have scored. Evans pretty much had to launch himself onto the post to nod it in. Brilliant. Dodd was sent off at 1-0 with a long time left to play. Think the Evans goal clinched it. Thought Berkovic got the other after Claus made a long run and laid it off. Dodd was sent off at 2-0 but just before half-time. It was Berkovic that scored, but am sure Evans scored 1st... Noodles34 Posted 18 February, 2011 Share Posted 18 February, 2011 He didn't miss, it was saved. but like someone said, the rebound miss was terrible, he was obviously stunned (literally) by the save. I was right behind the goal in The Archers, couldn't believe it, but maybe it took the pressure off all others he took after ?
kwsaint Posted 18 February, 2011 Share Posted 18 February, 2011 I was sat in the second row behind the goal at the Milton End when Evans scored the goal against West Ham. I seem to remember the ball going in off the opposite post as he crashed into the post. Really brave. As he was being congratulated he had no idea where he was as he was so groggy. Chin Strain Posted 18 February, 2011 Share Posted 18 February, 2011 Shearer missed in front of the Milton against Leeds when MLT was injured. MLTs miss, in my mind, was because he didn't want his 100th goal to be a penalty....so he saved it up and scored a stonker up the other end (left foot volley I think)

I was right behind the goal in The Archers, couldn't believe it, but maybe it took the pressure off all others he took after ? Mid-week, under lights. I was in the East stand I think and I remember the ball coming straight back to Matty who blasted it over the bar but the goal he scored after the miss is right up there with his best. Dark Munster Posted 18 February, 2011 Share Posted 18 February, 2011 Indeed, what was his record for us? No idea TBH, but I don't remember him missing one. According to Wiki: On 18 August 1979, he became the highest scoring full-back in the history of the Football League when he scored a penalty against Manchester United. markr27 Posted 18 February, 2011 Share Posted 18 February, 2011 I remember seeing Beattie score a penalty for the England U21s on TV - I have never seen a worst spot kick. Smashed straight down the middle, against the crossbar I think or perhaps at the keeper's head, hitting either then dribbling in over the line. When I saw his next spot kick on the box against Brighton I think (Cup game?), I was very surprised at his change of technique. Magilton always seemed to just smash them hard, low and straight as well, I always wondered why keepers never bothered to study his method! Appy Posted 18 February, 2011 Share Posted 18 February, 2011 Beattie is like Rickie, you just never think he is going to miss. I remember Beattie scoring for Stoke vs the skates a couple of seasons back. When he scored he ran up to them and said "Have that you ****ing skate bastards". Kingsland Codger Posted 28 February, 2011 Share Posted 28 February, 2011 Aside from Rickie, who of our current squad has scored a penalty for us? Or for anybody? IIRC, Connelly famously missed one for Ireland in a World Cup shoot-out.

I can't remember who took the penalties for us, would've been against Torquay and Norwich.

Super_Uwe Posted 28 February, 2011 Share Posted 28 February, 2011 Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Beattie got a fair bit of advice of Le Tiss regarding pens. His technique was very good, as was Matty's of course! Not sure how many he took competitively for us but I would imagine it's around the 15 mark. Super_Uwe Posted 28 February, 2011 Share Posted 28 February, 2011 Beatts didn't miss in a competitive game for us. Rickie hasn't has he? Both similarly good at them. Dodd wasn't bad for his few. We've been lucky to have decent pen takers over the years. Made up for it 2 seasons ago didn't we. Letting DMG near a penalty was slightly mental, and of course Best, Idiakez, Wotton. Before that, I only remember a Jim Magilton miss while MLT was injured. Yeah, I think we had to have a few dud years to make up for the glory days...! Funny people mention Wotton as he was actually a renowned set-piece specialist in his Plymouth days. As was Idiakez to be fair.
