Tac-tics Posted 18 April, 2011 Share Posted 18 April, 2011 Just watched an interview @ last nights PFA awards with Lawrie Mac and he was talking about Bale's development. Now I may be wrong and there is no point to this except for me being picky. Lawrie announced himself our director of football in 2006 and went on to say that Bale and Bridge use to over lap and link up perfectly??? Pretty sure none of that happened, did it?? Goalie66 Posted 18 April, 2011 Share Posted 18 April, 2011 (edited) A little bit of senile dementiia.. Bridge and Marsden he intended to refer to as Bale never played in the Premier with us!! Edited 18 April, 2011 by Goalie66

100%Red&White Posted 18 April, 2011 Share Posted 18 April, 2011 I haven't seen this interview but could Lawrie have just be commenting on their similar playing styles and how they used to 'over lap and link up perfectly' with whoever each were playing with at the time (and not that they were both on the pitch at the same time)? If not then Alzheimers it probably is.

Did anyone give you permission to listen properly and get the obvious meaning out of his comments? You are a football fan and it's obligatory to hear what you want to hear, not what is actually said, and intended. Sit on the naughty step for 30 mins. If not then Alzheimers it probably is. Nah, he defo believed what he was saying in that Bale or Bridge could drop back and cover while the other attacked kind of thing. I scratched my head a bit on it too. Big Mac was introduced as someone who oversaw Bales early career and was kind of given some credit in his development. He then went on to say how much ole saggy chops has done for Bale and how its down to him that Bale is where he is today. Got naff all to do with the youth development that also brought through Walcott and several other players that seem to be doing pretty good throughout the leagues right now of course. lol Still, its good to see someone getting so much attention and seeing Saints getting some kind of acknowledgement for it. He had some figurehead-type role in the Wilde board's setup in 2006/7, and both Bale and Bridge were left backs who overlapped their left sided midfielders, who were Skacel and Marsden respectively. It doesn't sound like he's suggesting they overlapped each other, even from your phrasing of it.

saintjay77 Posted 18 April, 2011 Share Posted 18 April, 2011 It's pretty obvious what he meant if you have half a brain - both Bale and Bridge are good overlapping full backs. Really?? Lawrie McMenemy, the former Southampton manager who worked with Gareth Bale as a youngster, insists he always knew the Welshman would be special. Bale picked up the PFA of the Year award in London on Sunday after a thrilling season in which he has fulfilled the promise shown as a 17-year-old at Southampton, where McMenemy was director of football. Speaking at the event, the former Northern Ireland manager said: “I saw him early days at Southampton and, as well as being a very good player, he was a very nice lad. “He had pace to kill and you could see he was an attacking full-back and him and Wayne Bridge together, it was perfect because if one went forward the other one sat in. “Of course Harry has developed him, probably given him more confidence and ability and he’s made him into one of the best attacking left sided players. That’s always been a hard one to fill. “Not only can he cross a ball but he can score goals. And also Harry’s got him working on his right foot – he’s just about got everything.” Bale won the award, which was voted by his fellow professionals, ahead of Carlos Tévez, Samir Nasri, Rafael van der Vaart, Scott Parker, Nemanja Vidic and Charlie Adam. In doing so, he became the first Tottenham Hotspur player to win the award since David Ginola in 1999 and the fourth since it began in 1973, after Clive Allen and Pat Jennings. Tamesaint Posted 18 April, 2011 Share Posted 18 April, 2011 George Burley on TalkSport today said that Bale spent 2 years in the Championship. I know he made his debut right at the end of a season but to all intents and purposes it was really only a season that he played for us. Perhaps George had one too many last night?? Mind you, Burley did say that Bale left too early and would have benefited from another year of Championship football. Lets hope that Oxo heard that. As good as he has turned out I do think another season in the championship would have done him good too. He was left out in the cold almost for the 1st season there and when ever he played the team lost for a while too. Shows if your good enough you can make it no matter what though. No need to rush things and listen to the right people and talent will take you far. Theo prob likes his pay packets now but I wonder if he thinks he should be getting the acknowledgements that Bale is getting?

Although he probably wasn't expected to walk straight into their side and set the world a light, wasn't his form hampered by some fairly serious injuries? As we were desperate for money maybe it was good that the transfer went ahead and then he broke down at spurs.

Maybe, although it's difficult to say he made the wrong decision as he's now the best player in the country and one of the most sought after players in the world. As we were desperate for money maybe it was good that the transfer went ahead and then he broke down at spurs. I agree and I dont think we were in a position to even offer him any more time with us so I am not argueing that I think he should of stayed longer. Circumstances meant we needed cash and he was a salable asset that was good enough to step up. As for walking into their team, I dont think anyone can do that but the amount of money speant I think he and the spuds fans would of expected more of a return in his 1st season. The extra time in the CCC had it been an option one way or another would have probably done him some good but he has gone on to prove that 1 season hasnt hampered him in the long run. I dont think he made the wrong decission as I doubt we could offer him much of a choice at the time. As I just said on the other post, in the long run he has gone on to prove he has the quality to make it anyway so its kind of a null argument. I think the extra time would of helped him but he has gone on and done it anyway so well done to him. Glad he came from us and hope he goes on to be counted as one of the worlds best. Dont think he is far off that already mind.

Frank's cousin Posted 19 April, 2011 Share Posted 19 April, 2011 Does it matter? I have not been LM's biggest fan since he got himself embroiled in the politics, but this is hardly a big deal. 'LM bigs himself up a bit' shocker!... When he was a manager, especially ours, that 'confidence and ego' was a BIG plus as it gave him authority, but also his confidence and self belief permeated throughout the side - I believe part of that 80s success was not just because we had such a good squad, but one that actually belived it could compete with the best... cant expect him to change his personality, huge ego, but this is harmless, as our Academy has a bloody good profile nationally anyway given the names that have come out of it in recent years. Deppo Posted 19 April, 2011 Share Posted 19 April, 2011 I was Director of Football when Bale was playing for Saints. I can remember him running down that left wing, playing a one-two with Matt Le Tissier, then whipping in a cross for Ron Davies to head it in. Ah, those were the days. He owes his career to me, that lad Bale.

david in sweden Posted 20 April, 2011 Share Posted 20 April, 2011 Unfortunately he has become used to a gravy train that is no longer free. Thats the part many find sad I am afraid Considering some of the money the club have squandered in the last decade, I don't think Lawrie's pay-outs are undeserved. I'm not comparing him with Ted Bates, (who was a one-off for the club) but after Ted ...there are few people who have given the club / fans more success or enjoyment. We'll have to wait a long time to see his like again..unless Nigel Adkins guides us to successive promotions in the next few years, and wins the FA Cup ..and gets us into Europe by 2016. No-one lives forever..and I certainly enjoyed the McMenemy years at the Dell and don't begrudge him whateverfreebies/ hand-outs he may be getting.
