Anyone else job hunting at the moment?

Was made redundant when my company went into liquidation a month or so back.

Have applied for a mixture of jobs, some way below what I was doing previously and not heard anything back.

Bloody tough going out there!

I feel for you mate. Keep your chin up and keep positive.

Thanks!

I've managed to get a temp role that is a) boring and b) v cr@p pay so not as bad as others, I know. At least it's money to pay the bills.

This recession malarkey ain't fun

Dragging on a bit unfortunately but a business loan is a very different animal to an earnings based product so I'm okay being patient.

Told our sellers to remarked last week though. They're a nice young family and not fair for them to miss out on another potential sale. I remember the stress it can cause at their age and as an old hand I know that we'll find an alternative either way.

I'm assuming you've registered with all the normal online sites Bridgey? I hear that The Echo on a Thursday is still a good source

If you've got your qualifications could you freelance?

Seriously Bridgey, I have met dozens of mortgage advisors over the years and you are very personable and very confidence inspiring.

Don't forget to put that 'employee of the week' certificate in your CV. ;-)

At least you've made an effort unlike some. I've been between jobs for a month throughout my working life and during this gap did temp work. It looks good when you do eventually get an interview because it shows that you want to work.

I got a call frommthemmthe other day, they said that they are still liaesing with our conveyancor surprisingly!

Iirc that deal is time limited, what would you advise?

Btw, I would wholeheartedly recommend voluntary work in the interim. Your time wod be very welcome by some extremely deserving causes.

Best of luck. Only suggestion I have to offer is to get your CV as presentable as possible. Recruiters have limited time to assess your Cv so you need to make it stand out, having different variations of your cv according to the positions you are applying for could also assist in gaining an interview. There is plenty of free online assistance in polishing your cv.

The product will have an end date on it, I seem to remember it was 6 months from date of issue. Have a ganders in the offer, it will say in section 3 I think when it must complete by. Give me a bell if you need help finding the date...

Speaking as someone who has experience in most facets of recruitment from both sides of the fence, a good piece of advice is to de-clutter your CV. Short, to the point. Try and refrain from long winded paragraphs and favour bullet points. The job market is so candidate rich at the moment people who are responsible for sifting through CVs dont want to read through paragraphs of well worded but useless info.

I'm not saying yours is, it might well be brilliant however. My knowledge of the Southampton job market isnt the best and London has been relatively unaffected by the recession unless you work in the public sector, banking or property market.

A woman called Sammy called again today, she told menit expires mid June. Should know if it's still a goer by then.

What about a building society or broker? Are looking for a change?

If you apply for B&Q, and get an interview, be aware - the payrates on their website are bogus.

When the time comes, they'll only offer you about 10p above minimum wage, when their website indicates above £7ph.

OMG, I actually left B & Q for that reason! Went for a job there, got it, first day had the contract shoved in front of me and it was £6.95ph! Needless to say, I wasn't pleased and left immediately.

If you really needed a job and the advertised rate was 6p higher per hour than what you eventually get offered - you'd refuse it?!!!

I went for the job as it was advertised at a significantly higher rate than £6.95ph, got it, only to be presented with a contract at a much lower rate.

spoilt

To a degree you're probably right.

I've been quite successful in what I do and have been able to achieve a pretty good basic and commission on top.

This being the case you tend to live to your means a d get debts etc accordingly, and when you change jobs - forced or otherwise - there is a minimum salary you have to attain, just to live.

I can only wish you good luck and offer some advice....don't restrict yourself to any particular role. Have an open mind. Its 30 years ago that I was in your position, I took crap jobs just to keep busy. For example, cleaning airplanes at Lasham. By chance I was in the employment agency office, I overheard a conversation, they could not fill a role. Could I do office work? Of course I could......once back in "reasonable employment" I needed a career job and eventually got into HP and am now at Vodafone, the money's good, etc.

If you can, try to stay positive about yourself as I am sure you have a lot to offer. If I had not stayed positive about myself, I would not have been in the office to overhear a conversation that kick started my career........instead I would have been at home watching Crown Court :)

I'm doing this at the moment :)

I have a job, but don't like it!

Looking to relocate back to Weston Super Mare where we have a house - financially it couldn't be a better time to do it, what with the mortgage being so incredibly low. Sadly it means uprooting the whole family once again, but unless I can somehow find £60k under the mattress, then we just can't afford to buy a house in Southampton.

Shouldn't be a problem to find a job, although I wanted a complete drastic career change, it's not the right time at the moment to do so, as employers have so many applications for jobs, they will only look to take on people who already have the relevant experience no matter what qualifications and other experience applicants have!

Still, looking forward to moving out of the flat and back into our own house, with a garden :)

B&Q are schysters pure and simple. To get the rate of pay they'd advertised, you'd have to train up for at least 2 years. You were lucky - the ad said £7.85 ph, they offered me £5.93ph. Their HR is non-existant, in fact it cost them when I jacked it in as they forgot to give me a contract to sign after three months - they expected 4wks notice, I gave them one. They didn't have a leg to stand on. Clueless.

That is exactly what I found. I walked, then was asked to stay a while - I did, for 3 weeks then I'd had enough. Normally I'd be more honourable and given the correct notice but I decided that it'd be wasting my time and theirs if I served a period of notice so just came in, handed my immediate resignation and left. The people I worked with at my "level" were good people, but f()ck me, the supervisors were very amateurish...

100% what I found. How that business makes ANY money when middle management just walk around, delegate and drink coffee is beyond me. Ground floor, you'll never meet nicer people. One step up....bunch of numbnuts.

I didn't look for confrontation whilst I was there but the fact they spoke to the people on the "shop floor" with complete disdain meant they considered me fair game too.

That said, having been round the block a few times and valuing the job very little, I had a few run-in's. Most notably was the incident when some silly cow ordered me to pick up some nails on the floor. She was with a group of fellow supervisors and was a bit stunned when I asked her to say please. After a little tizzy fit and an embarrassed "please" from her, I grabbed a broom and completed the duty. I don't know who was more annoyed/stunned; me because of the complete lack of people-management skills or her because of my retort :o

I don't know what it is about these people with a little bit of power bestowed upon them, but they seem to think they can waltz around like the nazi party members and belittle, speak rudely and generally try and humiliate people.

That is one incident of many during my short three week stay. It wasn't that I was being confrontational or deliberately argumentative/difficult at all, though. Irrespective, they were bullies and I feel sorry for the people who put up with that rubbish for such a measly wage and the faint, distant hope they might day, walk in their superiors shoes themself.

Any stories like that to tell? By the sounds of things, I'm sure you must have seen the little Hitler's treating their staff as badly as I did...

My background is IT sales and there are a couple of decent companies up in Basingstoke who take on people with sales experience which doesn't have to be in IT. I started out at one of them, good place to start as there is loads of training and they put you through industry vendor accreditations like Microsoft, Cisco, HP etc which add an extra few £ks onto your basic when you look to move on. It's channel sales as well so not that difficult and there are loads of incentives and prizes to win like holidays, days out, TV's, Ipods, even vouchers, i won loads of stuff in my time there. You'd probably be able to get your £25k as an OTE, i know one of them is definitely taking on at the moment. If you're intrested drop me a PM and i'll send you the details.

Upload you CV to www.monster.co.uk and www.jobsite.co.uk

A lot of recruiters use these boards to search for candidates in the UK.

Also get your profile of www.linkedin.com as business networking sites are one of the fastest growing ways to attain employment.

Definitely do this, i can vouch for this 100% as i've just got a new job after being approached on linked in. It's full of recruitment agencies looking for staff and companies out job ads on there.

Christ yeah.

Three of them stood by store entrance to 'meet and greet'. The rest of us were putting stock away, and rather than help the customer themselves (which is below many of them) they decided to delegate to us instead. Cue one confused customer, and 10 mins later, we get told 'why hasn't all the stock been put away yet?'

Another one used to 'think' he was funny, by walking past us saying 'Remember to put it in the right place lads' - like I'm just going to throw it anywhere...it may well have been sh1t pay but you have your pride you know?

The stuff they delegate is pathetic - it takes them longer to delegate it than it does to actually DO the flaming work.

I had a conversation with one supervisor just after I joined. 'So what do you think?' - I told him straight, half of the employees got away with doing sod all, and that B&Q needed a 'Back to the Floor' exercise, and quick. If I was running just the store I was in, I'd raise wages across the board 5%, and watch them get results.

I didn't meet ONE member of staff who was earning what they were expecting.

I'd take a job doing anything for minimum wage. The only work I can do now is piercing and need to learn tattooing better. I have visible piercings and tattoos so most jobs are out of the question as obviously I'm judged on the way I look. Not that I didn't expect that. I refuse to claim jobseekers though. I'm sure I'll get something eventually.

Good luck to everyone else looking for work.

Have had an interview for, and got through to the final stage, a specialist IT recruitment company in Southampton.

Looking promising, but not counting any chickens just yet.

Fingers crossed...!

Nothing. Nothing at all.

I dont specifically want to stay in mortgages, but want to stay in sales.

They approached me, so they must've seen something.

The skill and experience is transferable, it's just (not meant cockily) a new knowledge base to build.

I openly admitted I know v little about IT or recruitment but didn't seem to be a problem.

I'm looking forward to the chance to prove myself in a new sector and a massively growing and exciting company....given the chance.

Well done Bridgey mate. Just one question though; can I have fries with that please?

Btw, had a bit of movement yesterday, we're now actually where we thought we were when we started, if you get my drift.

I'm a married man, very flattered by your euphemistic chat up lines but can I please just have my burger and fries.

You're gonna struggle to get that first star if you're not careful too.
