Think we should wait and see who comes down from the premiership and who wins the play-off from League One before we get too carried away with predicting next seasons championship table.

I have done the BBC predictor thingy and have Wigan and Birmingham( Brum to lose 3-0 at Spurs) coming down and Blackpool staying up losing 3-1 at Man U. Hence Blackpool staying up on goals scored. Whilst I would like to see Hudders come up as I think they are one of the best three teams in the league this year, I can just see that Knut Ferguson fluking it.

2 of the current prem teams going straight down again? Barnsley for promotion? Saints only just surviving? Surely Brighton wont be up there with their minimal budget? Your crazy ;)

Swansea and Reading both losing the play off final is funnier.

Wouldn't it be great if a table actually ended up alphabetically correct? I wonder if it has ever happened? West Ham, Wolves and Wigan are trying their hardest in the Premier League this season, but the rest of them haven't really done their bit.

Interesting! The probability (football ability aside) is 1 in 24! (where ! is the symbol for 'factorial').

The actual probability is therefore 1 in 6.204484017332394e+23.

To put that in perspective, the generally accepted estimate for number of grains of sand in the world is 7.5e+17 (75 with 17 zeros).

So, while it is possible to have all teams finish alphabetically, it is soooooooo outside the realms of mathematical possibility as to be impossible. So given that little maths tutorial it will now probably happen next season!

Surely, that is entirely wrong.

It's a by product of being factored too many times in the formative years. But 49!/43!/6! will give you the lottery odds.

Go back and read the whole post...

But the probability isn't 1 in 24, as you said.

With a league of 10, the probability would be something like 1 in 3,628,800.

Are those serious?? Wow, 10/1 is bloody short to win the league! What do they know that we don't?

Skybet through Sky Sports would have contacts with people in the game that know if Saints are planning to spend or not, such as agents and thus shorten odds. They would also have seen what Norwich did last season and see it is not impossible to pass straight through the league.

The more I look at it the more convinced I am that might be a bit of value...

I think Middlesborough will surprise everyone and come good this season as they've had a good end to the season and don't have as much expectation as they did this time last season. Birmingham and West Ham have decent chances of going straight back up and I'm confident that the Saints will reach the play-offs but I think teams like Forest and Cardiff will have midtable finishes after 2 years of heartbreak in the play-offs.

Tip for the title: Hmm...I'll go with Pompey ;)

Deppo, sweetheart, go read the post.

I don't think that it is a 1 in 24 chance of the being alphabetical, like you say. I'd say it is more than that, by a long way. Can you show your workings out?

Its hard to predict how the relegated teams will do, even with the parachute payments, as they will all lose players and have to cut wages. West Ham and Brum both seem to have serious debt problems while Blackpool will be badly affected by the loss of Charlie Adam. As for Saints, it does look as if we won't be following the Norwich example of rebuilding a side for the NpC but will be relying on the promotion squad plus maybe 1 or 2 additions. If that is the plan, it seems reasonable to suppose that NA has told NC that the present team is almost good enough to compete at the top of the table with just a small tweak. If so, I hope they have plan B, which could be to make a reassessment after the first few results, and if it looks like more quality is needed to get out into the transfer market before the Sept transfer window closes.

Sadly, and somewhat incredibly, already know the answer to this. But you're going to have to click here to find out...

I may be too optimistic but I think we can mount a decent challenge next season (with a couple of quality additions). The momentum from this season will hopefully be taken through preseason and we will start next season with the bus at full speed. I certainly can't see us finishing bottom half. Do some people find it hard to believe that good times are on the way to St Marys?

I think midtable is an achievable aim for next season, we might sneak play offs depending on signings but so long as we aren't in a relegation battle or below the skates i'll be happy. In fact if anything a season to consolidate in the championship might actually be a good thing as we're a long way from a premiership side now and it'd cost us a fortune to get a team that is of the right standard in one season.

[MLG] According to the article that The9 posted, the odds of only 2 teams finishing behind each other in alphabetical order are 380/1. In a league of 20, the odds are 2,432,902,008,176,640,000/1 of an alphabetical finish. In a league of 24 (such as the Championship), they would be even higher. [/MLG]
