Have we dumped on Eastleigh FC?

A thread on EFC forum about the Saints team makeup for this seasons friendly. From what's written they seem to think we have a contractual obligation to play them with a strong team (part of transfer agreement for Martin). What they get is U21 and they ain't happy!

Their DOF is quoted as saying 'Without going into detail, I can assure our supporters that we are well aware of the Contractual obligations of SFC - and we are currently dealing with the matter'.

If true not a great way to treat them?

Not aware of any contractual change based on the signing of Martin, although this is plausible. As far as I knew we had a long-term affiliation with them as their parent club in which we had to arrange an annual friendly match and were under no obligation to play a full-strength team. Eastleigh also kept all the gate receipts and money raised from the match. Appears from what they have said that this may have changed, however!

I went on their forum a few years back before I watched them at East Thurrock, had a few fellas on their called the Bob's, the Band of Brothers. At the game the Bob's turned up, it was very exciting.

No doubt they are aware that the phrase comes from Shakespeare, with 'we happy few' ;-)

Couldn't care less how we treat them.

Over the years we've supported them with these games, countless young players have gone there, former players have gone there to play, coach and manage, yet their fans hate us.

If they aren't happy we could always cancel the game? We always put out a team to give them a good game. Good warm up for both.

From what I can tell, this isn't anything to do with a cosy local relationship, it's a contractual issue from when we signed Aaron Martin from them two years ago, where as part of the deal we agreed to send a "strong" squad for a friendly every pre-season for the duration of Martin's initial contract with us (3 years, IIRC). In theory, if we break that agreement, Eastleigh could get the Football League to place a transfer embargo on us, as we have technically reneged on a transfer contract.

Unless we see the exact wording of said contract we'll never know how interpretable the "strong team" phrase is.

I'm sure we'll be sending a "strong" U21 team.

No doubt the SFC lawyers have got it covered one way or t'other.

Perhaps it's not in the spirit of the agreement but lawyers have a way of squirming around potentially badly or vaguely written contracts...

They also play the skates every year so I'm not surprised we don't play our first team. The boys could easily catch some incurable disease which means they'd be on benefits for the rest of their lives.

I bet pompey won't send their reserves.

And we wouldn't want to show some local loyalty by sticking to the spirit of the agreement?

Exactly, any agreement on team strength is so subjective it's pointless. The last few years it hasn't been that strong. Even when we did play first teamers they all came off at half time.

It'll be a team strong enough to match them, surely that's strong enough?

Don't you think its got something to do with helping them with revenue by playing a side that people might pay to go and see? What's wrong with us trying to do that for them, or is it now SFC's policy to do the minimum for the locals? I assume local loyalty does indeed mean eff all now.

Am I missing something? Didn't we sign Martin on a one year contract with an option to extend. We have just signed him up for a further 2 ? years.

Cant help thinking that a game against our under-21 squad would be far more useful to Eastleigh in terms of preparing for the coming season. Losing heavily to a Championship team would be far less useful a competitive game. IMO the crowd (and therefore revenue) for this game would be far less than if we send a team of "big" names which is where the issue is really.

I had an argument with a Yank once on a joint exercice outside Dortmund who said that it comes from the nickname for the 101st Airborne going back to the second world war, (and where the name of the book comes from, apparently). I did point out that it actually comes from Shaekespears Henry V, act 4 Scene 3 and pre-dates the formation of the 101st by 500 years. He called me a Limey faggot, in the officers mess, in front of everyone. I asked my Colonel for permission to scratch his eyes out, but he would only give me permission to insult his uniform and haircut.
