13 players unavailable for selection for one reason or another.

Game was far too open in the first half, changed it a bit to make sure we stayed in the game and we ground out until HT.

Few words said at HT and a few players were below par.

Changed the structure in the 2nd half, and we did much better. Delighted for W-P, and Aaron Martin to get their goals.

Pleased to see the young players get some minutes, Hoskins looked lively when he came on.

Spoke to Lallana about giving us more width, he came too deep in the first half and they were screaming at him to get wide.

Fraser and Butters both out through injury, which is why Harding got the call at RB.

Transfers:

Sounds like Holmes and Forte may be on their way, Adkins talking about activity involving those 2 in the coming weeks.

Kris commons - Doesn't believe anything is going to happen this one now.

We're endevouring to bring in a couple of players, maybe more than a couple of players.

Lee - the work permit still moving on, nothing more to stay on that.

Endevour to give ourselves the opportunity to win the league. Alot of things are going on behind the scenes to bring in real quality to improve what we have, might be a small signing, a loan signing or ''every chance'' a major signing and that's what we're trying to do.

Would be a shame to lose Holmes and Forte without bringing in players to replace them who are of a higher quality - but it looks like we're after more players than I thought we would be.

No disrespect to them, but it wouldn't take much to replace them with higher quality - which is what we're trying to do.

Great interview and surprisingly open for our Nigel. Big big hint that something is going to happen soon. Very positive. Hopefully we'll get the 3 or 4 players we need, quickly!! COYR

Whenever I think of us making a major signing - I always think Jay Rodriguez. He's the only major striker we've been linked with who we've never denied interest in.

I think we have to guard against getting our hopes up for signings.

Twas ever thus - there is never any guarantee that will will actually sign players we're after, but it was clear that we are chasing several players and we can't ask for more than that right now.

I think quite a few (including me) were expecting some more signings in the summer to give us some more strength in depth. I am hopeful but I'm not sure how wise Nigel is mentioning big signings because it raises expectations unnecessarily and people will be disappointed if we don't get the players we want (like in the summer reportedly.)

He was put on the spot, as happens with the media, and he gave a pretty good general answer IMO. I doubt anyone would be more disappointed that Nige himself if he didn't get in the players he wants. Personally, he didn't raise my expectations any more than they were already - being top of the league I fully expect us to *try* to consolidate that by making some signings to give us the best possible chance of promotion (which is pretty much exactly what Nige said) but I am also realistic enough to know that it doesn't always happen.

If Nigel doesn't get in the players he wants. I would have thought that was quite obvious.

Did Nigel personally tell you he failed to get the players he wanted last window?

I thought him and cortese ultimately decided on the course that came to be. Not through failure but choice...

And without these signings in the Summer, we got off to a record breaking start to the season and roared to the top of the table and maintained that position through to the halfway stage of the season. In most positions we have had that strength in depth, apart from perhaps one or two places and we have made it through to the January transfer window and can fine tune the squad to give us enough impetus to push on to automatic promotion in the second half of the season. So we're short up front and have signed an International J League striker. Personally, I would have called that a big signing on the face of it.

As the club's policy has generally been to keep quiet about signings until the player is unveiled as a done deal, I take this statement as a clear and unequivocal sign that there is something in the pipeline at the moment. IMO, the mention of a big signing will not have been suggested without there being some substance to the possibility. I don't feel that we are talking about these players from this division or the division below whose names have been bandied about; I wouldn't be surprised if we got in a surplus Premiership player, or somebody from a decent European top division team, the sort of signing that signalled serious intent.

Whenever I think of making a major signing I can only think of one name - Kevin Keegan. Since then, to be fair, every signing has been a disappointment.

And, in truth, all our very best players since then have been home grown - Shearer, Le Tissier, Bale.

to be honest, IMO, from where we were at the time Lambert was a major signing for me. A massive statement of intent at the time.

How old are you fella?

Signing Keegan was like coming home tonight and finding we'd had a bid accepted for Lionel Messi...

Lambert was a lot of money (relative) but a striker at Bristol Rovers whose salary we tripled! (Still turns out he's ok...) :)

Not old enough to have been around for Keegan!

The thing could be first team action for players coming in. Because we have such a tight nit squad breaking in to the team may be a problem for who ever comes in. They may feel that they are worth an instant starting place and the thought of warming a bench is not as attractive as earning a bit less but playing.

I am still not convinced anyone is coming in except Lee. And that's pending the Home Office not f**king it up for us.

Is this because you don't think the club are looking to bring someone in, or because you don't think we'll get the players that we target?

Personally I doubt Nige would want to bring in anyone who thought that - he is so big on it being a squad game that any player who vaguely felt they deserved to start no matter what, would cause problems in the squad. That's not to say he won't try to sign players who he thinks are *capable* of jumping straight into the first team, as I think they are exactly the players we need... quality players who improve what we've got. But they must have the right attitude.

Must admit, i feel exactly the same. Lee and a last ditch loan signing would be my guess.

Unfortunately, certain teams in this league are going to literally go all out to sign the available players. Rumour has it Leicester will be paying Billy Sharp 30k a week. I don't believe we will even attempt to compete with that. Maynard will be the same. I can't say i blame Saints for this, by the way. It just seems clear for the evidence of the summer, and the last 10 days, that we aren't willing to over-pay for players. Leicester and WHU are.

I really hope we can sort things out with Puncheon. A fit and firing Punch could be the difference this season. Mate of mine ran into him yesterday. Said it's in Saints' hands. He wants to play, so we'll have to see what happens.

I for one will feel very let down if we don't make a big signing after what Nigel said/hinted at.

From the interview it sounds like we have something major up our sleeve.

Again, if you aren't going to understand what I have written then there isn't much point in having a conversation. We clearly wanted a striker in the summer but weren't able to get one for whatever reason. Now I think that not getting one (whoever was at fault there I have no idea) may have cost us a few points this year and if we fail to land our targets in this window and we fail to get top two because of that... Well that will be really gutting for everyone involved with SFC due to our great start.

This is the exact sort of thing I was talking about and why it isn't the wisest move to announce there is every chance we could make a major signing before we do so.

Just to clarify, Nigel said NO SUCH THING.

He said something along the lines of (if someone can quote exactly, that would be ideal) "we might make a loan signing, a small signing or maybe even a major signing, but we are working hard behind the scenes to get people in'.

to be fair, the doomsayers on here would be moaning their nuts off if NA had said we werent in for anyone!! We are what we are, some will always be negative and some will relish the ride we are on!! Talking about negative doomsayers, where is the biggest of them all tonight!! It is relaxing and quiet!!
