Nick Illingworth, editor of the Saints online fanzine Ugly Inside, thinks a new scheme may not have a big take-up among fans.

He said: “The original agreement needs renegotiation.

If they introduced the same thing I think the effect would be minimal. People are creatures of habit and I don’t think saying to them that they can have free bus travel will change their habits necessarily.

“It all comes down to money. If you asked Saints fans if they wanted a free ticket then they would say yes, even if they only lived 50 yards away from St Mary’s.

“Solent Bluestar already run a similar discount scheme for fans.

“I do think free taxi rides would be great, as there are lots of supporters who live outside of the city.”

Also, I must have missed his sacking from the role of Saints Trust Spokesman.

“Sustainable transport is at the top of the council’s agenda and we have been work i n g with the club to unders t a n d the travel patterns of supporters, which have changed since the stadium was built."

Daily echo clearly can't afford someone to spell check their articles and edit out the random gaps in words...

HE's not contradicting himself is he? Have you actually read the article?

Now we are premier league, the least I expect is free helicopter transfer - the traffic can be murder at 5 'o clock on a Saturday

Make your point, I've clearly made mine in the highlighted text.
He says that people are creatures of habit and are unlikely to change their travel routine just at the offer of a free bus ticket - fair point imo. He then says though, that if asked if they'd want a free ticket, most fans would say "yes", even if in practice they probably wouldn't use one - again, correct, I'd class myself in that bracket. Yep. He hasn't contradicted himself at all and Marsdinho has misunderstood and made himself look silly...

Why would you say "yes" to something at the cost of the club which you have no desire to actually use?

I didn't say I'd have no desire to use it. Just that there is a difference between accepting an offer theoretically and what you might end up doing in practice.

The issue of a free ticket is neither here nor there, the article is about the free travel and while I agree there are many who won't change their travel habits, I do think that more fans would make use of free bus travel, if it were to return.

I cant understand how people do not understand that? Do you want a free something, the answer is alway going to be yes, even if you dont want it.

He's a total bellend. End of.

I was going to ask why you thought that, but you said 'End of', so that's that. A bloke who is passionate about Saints, has followed them all over the country for years and will do all he can to help others is a bell end. Nice one.

I don't think the two are mutually exclusive. Quite possible to be a bell end and a Saints fan. You do read the forum right?

Plenty of people would use it. I live in Hamble and have the option of train or bus to get to St Mary's. 95% of the time I get the train because it's quicker but I'd go on the bus if it was free.

Not that it would happen, but I'd like to see them introduce free train tickets like Brighton do. This could be from inside a certain boundary (Brockenhurst, Fareham, Winchester etc) but would also benefit our fans who travel from further afield as they could park and get the train to Southampton, or save money by only needing a ticket to one of those destinations.

It's possible to form an opinion of someone without meeting them. Do you have an opinion of Cortese for example? I've never met you, and I think you're a bell end.

Arguing with someone they don't know if someone else they dont know is a bell end or not on an anonymous Internet forum. Yep, I'm certainly worried what your opinion of me is.

No he's not, he's a decent bloke. Talking about 'your' club is not a crime, and if people have a problem with him doing this, I suggest you phone the echo and give them your take on the subject in question. We'll see who gets the 'quote'.

Turks, you seem to have performed a 360 in recent months... for a good while you let stuff go and didn't try and get a bite all the time, but now it seems back to your old (preferred?) ways? ;)

Anyway... Nick is not a bell-end at all, and whether people think he is or not is of no real relevance to this thread IMO. I disagree with him about the bus travel - I think more people will use it, although obviously we'll only know once it is in place. I believe any effort to reduce the number of cars in and out of the city on matchday has to be a good thing, and the club should engage with council initiatives like this - as a major contributor to traffic congestion, they need to take some responsibility for that and, as mentioned, it was a planning requirement in the first place anyway.

Also, should the club have any ambitions to expand the ground, as we think they do, they need to make sure they consider the impact on transport infrastructure, so rejecting things like this won't help their long term cause.

Nick is a sound bloke with the club at heart and probably far more a fan than most who post on here. The fact that a few dins on a forum (a lot of whom don't put in half the legwork he does) hate him shows them up far more than him.

Bless.

What an idiot.

But bless.

Just bless.

haha, coming from one of the biggest Bellends on this forum, dont make me laugh.

What you ever done Robert? Ever campaigned on behalf of saints fans? Ever laid on coaches etc.? Ever help get rid of one of the worst managers we have ever had?

No, thought not. Your contribution is to spout a bit of drivel from your keyboard, whoopee, big man eh?

Unless there is a logical reason why you dont like him, maybe he fingered your mum?

About frigging time the council pulled their finger out on this, I'm still annoyed at the removal of the free bus tickets in the first place (after the STs had been paid for), and I've moved home 5 times since then ! Plus the agreement with Lowe indicated that the free buses would come back if Saints had (something like) 10 crowds over 20k in a season.

Nick's wrong that people won't use free buses, I'm begging them to bring it back, would save me about £200 a season it transport costs from Hedge End, which I could then invest in beverages, as I wouldn't need to drive to matches. :)

I was also using the free bus when I was "only" just north of the Common, as opposed to being 5 miles away.

On the Illingsworth as a person front, we've met a few times and I've even played football with him - I think he's a good bloke, though the media presentation of him as a Saints rentaquote using outdated organisations to underpin his credentials is annoying. There's nothing wrong with his "Ugly Inside" title, which is a lot more legitimate than the Saints Trust title. FWIW I also couldn't care less what people did as SISA members getting on for 20 years ago, they've been irrelevant ever since.
