Singing OWTSGMO Slowly....

Have to say its good once and a while but I am starting to get sick of hearing the spurs version of our song all of the time!?!

You can't beat a chap in the Itchen North or Northam singing, "IN THAAAAT NUMBER...." Followed by a good old traditionally paced version for as long as is necessary. Time to switch back to the traditional version for a bit. Slow version is dull and frankly we never seem to get to the faster bit!

Come on Northam... I was a little disappointed by the singing yesterday. We need you! Lets switch back. The teams doing well. The staff at SMS working hard (although someone needs to sort the beer sales out - far too slow at HT!) - time for us to up our game at home just a little.

:)

Trouble is the slow one always gets interrupted by some kind of event on the pitch, even a tackle or fairly harmless shot gets enough of an "oooh" from the crowd to stop the song and as such, we never get around to singing the fast-paced version. The slow version on its own sounds dreary and boring

Onto a broader point; our support really is pretty terrible at the moment. Beating Palace was great 'n' all but any neutral would have looked at us as a completely plastic club yesterday.

Awesome support from Palace though.

The original post isn't even worthy of comment it's so ridiculous.

Yes, the home support isn't always fantastic, but have you been watching the matches on Sky Sports today? Right now, you could hear a pin drop - both home and away fans really are terrible. Generally away fans are louder as it's concentrated support and Palace were okay in that respect. But this Sunderland - Liverpool match might as well be in a library.

I believe there was a concerted effort a few years ago to re-establish the slow version. At that time the song was always started at a fast clip and accelerated at an alarming rate! It's good to hear it done at a more leisurely pace. Which tempo constitutes the "traditional" version is debatable, I suppose, but I would consider it to be the slow version. To me it brings to mind a stately, funereal street march in New Orleans - with Louis Armstrong leading the way, croaking out the verses and punctuating the song with some tasty solos on his trumpet. It's a great song to have, regardless of the tempo, but I do think it sounds better when slowed down.

I'm not sure your first line is worthy of comment. But I agree with the rest of your post. Although clearly it was worth starting a thread as you produced a helpful comment from the debate. I agree with you, home fans are quiet.... Doesn't mean we should be though.

Our away support is great. Home support is becoming a little quiet. Ok the style of play has changed under MP, less exciting but more effective, but we still need the Northam to lead the singing, I thought they seemed a little flat on Saturday. Itchen north gave a good account of themselves. Perhaps it was just my position in the stadium and the effect of a good away fan base.

But, I think it was the first season at SMS when we won the title for one of the loudest sets of fans? bet we are not at the moment.

Perhaps we are in a little shell shock and responding to MPs more risk averse style?

Either way, slow anthem is ok but I still think we could do with mixing it up a little.

I used to enjoy the continuous OWTS. Opposition fans would try to hijack it with one of their songs but we'd just keep going. Was brilliant.

Swansea tried a couple of times and gave up. Let's hope it carries on every game now. Start with the slow and then carry the quick bit on for ages.

I think there was a collective realisation that a "12th man" was needed yesterday to get us over the finish line.

Exactly this.

The players really needed our support during the second half yesterday when we couldn't get near the ball.

The current slow version is definitely slower and more laboured than the Dell 70s and 80s "slow" version. In my opinion it is a bit of a depressing dirge as a result, and can hardly lift the team. We can't get a happy medium. The really fast version with board-banging is simply ****e.

For a superb example of how it should be sung, get your 1st May 1976 DVDs out and listen to the rendition as the players are being introduced to her majesty just before kick off.
