lordswoodsaints Posted 5 January, 2009 Share Posted 5 January, 2009 as reported today, derby could be about to be bought by a saudi arabian family. http://www.thisisderbyshire.co.uk/news/selling/article-584616-detail/article.html so why not us? we are a similar club,in size and fanbase,we both have fairly new stadiums (although im not sure what the debt is for derby) and they have owners (shareholders) who dont look like they want to sell. we have just as much,if not more potential than derby so where are we going wrong? offix Posted 5 January, 2009 Share Posted 5 January, 2009 derby takeover? why not us? Easy, because there is no value left in SFC. Nothing that would make any kind of investment, no matter how small, worthwhile. There's only debt, lousy players, debt, lousy coach, debt, and more debt. Window Cleaner Posted 5 January, 2009 Share Posted 5 January, 2009 Not sure of this but are Derby relatively debt free compared to us? Probably, didn't they get taken over a couple of years ago? Then they had a year freewheeling in the Prem, taking the cash and not spending much. Also loaned out most of their players to save money for a promotion push this season. Don't kid yourself otherwise. population of southampton 234,224 population of derby 229,407 i would say they would be very similar at least, if not we would have the bigger fanbase due to our 27 years in the top flight (the only top flight club in the south for most of them)attracting a far more widespread fan. derby is set within a strong belt of clubs in the midlands who attract bigger crowds than them. corky morris Posted 5 January, 2009 Share Posted 5 January, 2009 We have £43m of debts & you would also have to buy the equity - so lets say at least £31m to repay non-stadium debt & buy the equity. Not sure what Derby is valued at, BUT what it does have that we dont is parachute payment(s). Are they paid for 2 seasons after relegation or just 1? I think it is 2 so lets say another year of that at the very least. You would need at least £35m to stabilse SFC & that is without Lowe & others trying to charge a premium for their shares. Why would anyone want to do that?

But the difference is Southampton has a huge urban catchment area which boosts the UrbPop to over 300,000 whereas I don't think the same applies to Derby. Nottingham is about 20 miles, Sheffield 28, Stoke 30 etc etc. Yet they have a bigger fan base than either Pompey or Ourselves. Hampshire has a population of about 1.7 million,Derbyshire less than half of that. You've just gotta face facts Hampshire people just aren't interested in Football, well not when they have to pay £25 to see it they aren't.

derry Posted 5 January, 2009 Share Posted 5 January, 2009 Derby have the £11m from the Premier this year and next year and their average gates are about 27000, In two leg semi final v MU in the Carling Cup and play Notts Forest in the 4th round of the FA Cup. You've just gotta face facts Hampshire people just aren't interested in Football, well not when they have to pay £25 to see it they aren't. It may have something to do with being in the top flight of Engliah football for 60+ years (compared to our 27), being League Champions twice and European Cup semi-finalists. Derby have a very long and illustrious history, and as a result have a very large following compared to our own. The urban area around Derby would provide the basis for a much bigger support base than Southampton, where the surrounding area is not the working-class football based population like the industrial midlands. Its not so much that Hampshire people are interested in football, its more that football is traditionally a working-class sport, and Hampshire really isn't very "working class" outside of Southampton and Pompey. You know I could have helped there - I could have saved him a lot of strain and ensured he spread it out and lost it over two months But seriously a lot of rich people have been hit and many of their companies are implementing Cap Ex freezes, Op Ex reductions as well as travel & recruitment bans. Not easy being rich these days, lucky old us lot on here eh Well apart from Alpine & you who are no doubt changing Euro salary into pounds as fast as you can.... :yawinkle: A few more percentage drops against the pound and you guys could form a consortium to buy Saints out of your shopping budgets!
