N/West Saint Posted 6 January, 2009 Share Posted 6 January, 2009 Living in Manchester you would assume that the utd fans would be on my case yesterday. However most of those i have spoken to think that the ref spoilt the game when he sent our player off and the penalty was a joke. They are also saying that we should stick with JP as we looked OK, and that if we could survive this season we might have a good year next season. Are they just sympathising with me or do they have a point?

OldNick Posted 6 January, 2009 Share Posted 6 January, 2009 a bit of both. The Man utd fans had sung without stopping and were very good. After the player was sent off and the penalty given they quientenedfor a while as they I believe knew the ref had ruined the contest. Secret Site Agent Posted 6 January, 2009 Share Posted 6 January, 2009 I recall that when i was, ahem, watching the match that the commentator on Satanta (not sure who he is) did mention the same thing, but in general not specifically about the game, and also was praising Lowe in that he was the best one to guide us through these tricky waters. And according to my Polish mate, whose french is better than mine, the Frogs, especially the bird, were saying something along the lines of Jan has done well with the limited talent and funds at his hands and it is good that he is being given time to develop them and are playing a more explosive game, (which I think he meant a faster open game). Their general round up was we were outmatched, as we were playing a world beating side, with some un-unique, (which I took as being very poor) decisions going against us. To be fair it's easy to be loud when you're supporting officially the best team in the world and playing against a team you're almost certain to beat. Despite me hating plastic United fans, it's impossible to deny that they've always had the loudest away supporters.....although I was a bit disappointed that Saints fans weren't a little bit louder. I think I only heard OWTS once during the whole match.

saints_is_the_south Posted 6 January, 2009 Share Posted 6 January, 2009 although I was a bit disappointed that Saints fans weren't a little bit louder. I think I only heard OWTS once during the whole match. The main problem was the Northam being split up. I emailed David Luker asking him why when we play cup games & the away team take their full 15% that they can't be put in the Chapel. His response was as follows & probably something we all knew already tbf. Hi Lee The Police have a major say in this. Northam is used due to its positioning, e.g. Closer to railway bridge, main road and access routes to railway station Regards David
BotleySaint Posted 6 January, 2009 Share Posted 6 January, 2009 I think he's right. we didn't play that badly. But people are only seeing negative in everything. People on the outside can see we actually did ok.. we didn't disgrace ourselves. We did have some nice passages of play and looked well in the game until United scored. Even then if we hadn't had Patterson sent off just as we were doing ok closing them down, forcing a few mistakes at the back, it'd have been a lot less comfortable for United. BUT 10 against 11 top players is always going to be hard to create anything decent. Yet we had chances from Smith, Surman and I even recall at one stage we had the ball played across their box. Most Premiership teams would struggle with 10 against 11 against United. I agree we've played ****e this season and Portfleet has made some bad decisions. Some of our signings have been wierd. A new manager MIGHT even help. But didn't we play 4-4-2 against United? Maybe he is beginning to see the light.

Arizona Posted 6 January, 2009 Share Posted 6 January, 2009 Man Utd away fans have always been pretty vocal. For me that was clear and of little suprise, Bebatov was strolling and skipping around players, Rooney probably would have scored/created further goals if on earlier.............but who thought it would be any different ? Ken Tone Posted 6 January, 2009 Share Posted 6 January, 2009 snipped > What is this obsession with 4-4-2? Too many people are listening to Merrington on Solent it seems to me. United didn't play 4-4-2. Berbatov was clearly playing behind Welbeck, not next to him. Liverpool don't play 4-4-2. They play 4-2-3-1, not unlike us ;-) In fact really the most valid criticism of Poortvliet's tactics is that 'total football' is common place nowadays, not the novel idea he seems to think it is. At one point I saw Rooney covering at left back against us! If that is not total football, what is? K.

Hmmm I read in the build up to the match that Ferguson had told his mis-firing strikers to 'run riot' against us. So when they didn't he actually had told them to not humilate us because we were a youthful team! Think the Firey Scot had under-estimated Super Kelv! Personally I thought they were beginning to showboat and take the pi** at one point, then Rooney came on and shook them up a bit, as if Ferguson had told him to stop the pi**ing about and make the team get on with it. Why else bring him on when he was being rested? It's not as though they were getting worried about losing. K.
INFLUENCED.COM Posted 6 January, 2009 Share Posted 6 January, 2009 possibly - it looked to me as if they had more off target mind than were saved by Kelvin. Gibson being very guilty, the room he had in the second half was criminal with at least 3(prior to hitting the back of the net) ending high up in the Northam, don't think for a minute they were instructed to take their foot off the pedal so as not to humiliate us, they may have eased up by default but by instruction, no way
Saints67 Posted 6 January, 2009 Share Posted 6 January, 2009 possibly - it looked to me as if they had more off target mind than were saved by Kelvin. My gaffer (A Man U season ticket holder FWIW) was very complimentry about Davis and Perry who he thought were both outstanding. He said we played some very neat football but with no cutting edge inside or around the box. He said had Smiths standing foot not slipped just as he shot then it would have been goal bound. Whether it would have got past Van de Sar is another thing. He felt we were unlucky but more players of ours impressed him than he thought would. Mind you he thought Lancashire could develop into a really good centre half!

Verbal Kint Posted 6 January, 2009 Share Posted 6 January, 2009 I'm afraid we lost the game before a ball had been kicked with the team selection. trousers Posted 6 January, 2009 Share Posted 6 January, 2009 I know this has been raised before but I venture that our well groomed pitch didn't help our cause against Man Utd....we've been comparing Saints' Cup performance to that of the other underdogs but the one advantage most of those other clubs have, that we don't, is the dodgy pitch factor. I put it to you that the quality of our pitch helped shoot ourselves in the foot v Man Utd? (not that we were ever going to win but it couldn't have helped is the point I'm waffling on about) Something which might also be a factor in our poor home form in the league too? (Although, that said, I'd have thought the 'pretty passing' approach would benefit from a posh lawn rather than t'other way around?)
NickG Posted 6 January, 2009 Share Posted 6 January, 2009 I have seen some real rubbish this season but actually thought we gave it a go for first half hour, and against players of the calibre, 10 men were only ever going to run out of ideas and energy. It was never going to be a reflection of where we are at -as they can beat premiership sides 3-0! As always we were lacking up front. But thought we chased a lot more -prior to the sending off then others are saying. David Armstrong said esay victory but by no means men agianst boys. Not saying it was close or we are playing well in league -we are not! but didn't think it was dire.
