If you are fleeing war, persecution or grinding poverty you are in a desperate situation so won’t care for legalities and most probably don’t know the full risks involved in the crossing. I have sympathy for anyone desperate enough to attempt the English Channel in one of those dinghies. 1

I'm firmly in the if you're safe in France you should stay there gang, but can't fathom the mindset of anyone agreeing that they should be left to perish if they jump on a dinghy to come here. That's just messed up thinking. Yeah it’s an awful way to think. I don’t think I’ve met anyone in real life who says anything other than “these people are here illegally, they should be collected and sent straight back immediately”. I’m yet to meet someone in real life who is a “let them drown” merchant, but given the dregs who have uttered that on here, I don’t much want to. 1
