If I walked up to a military base, ignored warnings and jumped over the barriers, I'm pretty sure I'd be shot and probably killed. Same principle should apply to our borders.

If you willingly do something that you know is very dangerous, stupid and illegal, and die as a result, then I have no sympathy.

You should watch the movie ‘The Swimmers’, gives a good insight in how people end up in these sort of situations. If you are fleeing war, persecution or grinding poverty you are in a desperate situation so won’t care for legalities and most probably don’t know the full risks involved in the crossing.

I have sympathy for anyone desperate enough to attempt the English Channel in one of those dinghies.

There's no war in France, and the vast majority of these people are economic migrants.

Agreed, but should they be left to struggle and drown at sea? Yes or no.

Still have to be pretty desperate to feel the need to cross the channel in a dingy just to get to this place.

Indeed. I'm firmly in the if you're safe in France you should stay there gang, but can't fathom the mindset of anyone agreeing that they should be left to perish if they jump on a dinghy to come here. That's just messed up thinking.

Yeah it’s an awful way to think.

I don’t think I’ve met anyone in real life who says anything other than “these people are here illegally, they should be collected and sent straight back immediately”.

I’m yet to meet someone in real life who is a “let them drown” merchant, but given the dregs who have uttered that on here, I don’t much want to.
