As much as that bloke is a bellend, he really shouldn't be charged with anything. I'm fed up of the police taking an authoritarian stance on ridiculous things.

Whilst i agree if that is the case then there is no consistency.

I really don't think Lucy connolly should have been jailed and certainly not for the amount of time she has been but the flip side of that is that she pleaded guilty so she kind of left it up to the system to decide.

In most cases I wouldn't be jailing anyone for speech as its pathetic and certainly something that has changed for the worst in my lifetime. Chanting death to the IDF on TV is pathetic but treating the viewing public like toddlers because some people found those words a bit offensive is mad.

Police are now investigating them although Glastonbury is full of drippy pro-Palestine twats who would be easy to whip up.Ridiculous how much coverage it getting but if you were an Israeli there surrounded by crowd yelling death to the IDF you would pretty much feel you were amongst a hate filled mob

Don’t get me on those Irish cunts either

100% but also if you're a Jew going to Glastonbury you've got to expect some middle class twats with luxury beliefs such as jew hate surely?

We are all in agreement that you should be free to act like a bellend and say twatty things on TV and not be jailed for it. If you want to discuss specifics of Israel there's a thread for that...

We are but given people do get jailed for it, it'll be interesting to see if any charges are made given the PM himself said it was hate speech.

On the subject of female popstars your young relatives might like, but you always assumed were crappy, but are actually really good, I have developed an appreciation of Miley Cyrus in recent years. She did Glasto in 2019.

Did a good version of Nothing Else Matters with Metallica as well.

Considering she has a serious illness that attacks her vocal chords (Reinke's edema) she has changed her sound to deal with that. She's aware how she went off the rails as well...

It'll be how interesting to see how long his prison sentence will be given we've seen sentences of anything between 2-5 years for saying similar things on facebook. Surely this is worse than people writing naughty things on facebook to a few hundred people when hes chanted it live on stage in front of thosands there and a TV audience of possibly millions.

There's a world of difference inciting people to burn down hotels in this country to kill people, and attacking the army of a foreign country. The first can he done by people in this country. The latter can't be.

The incitement was specific against the IDF and not targeted against British Jews. Sure, some dinlo's could target British Jews on the back of it. The chants were stupid, but I don't see that anything will come of it.

That wasn't the chant. It was against a group of people, a military, miles from here. If people are stupid enough to target individual British Jews for whatever reason, they will.

She's brilliant. Like Olivia Rodrigo, not my cup of tea, but brilliant nonetheless. I loved that Flowers song she did a while back.

The same as when people shout "Death to America" that's also not anti-Semitism even though they have the largest Jewish population in the world.

I wish people wouldn't conflate the Jewish/Israel thing. It may have been a big deal in the past for the older generations, but it really isn't a huge thing now, especially for younger people. What young people don't want to see is senseless killing of innocent men, women and children. This is where the IDF come in because they have been very liberal in how they have decided to wage their war.

Now that I can support! It was daft attention seeking, and sadly, the fall out has gotten them more attention.

Kneecap have more of a problem with their comments. Their music is even worse.

Are you advocating that people posting get out there and burn the hotels down should just be ignored? I’m glad these vile people got some ‘feedback’

The FB posts highlighted where people were and incited people to attack them, and people did. It was disgraceful behaviour and the strong sentence had the desired affect. Completely different to the Glasto issue.

Anyways, this is a Glasto thread and I'll take it no further off course.

I bet the IDF are laughing thinking "I could him with a fucking Xmas card".

Even if it was a crowd I would assume they'd just do what they do now, and mow them down with their assault rifles.

Her cover of Zombies by Cranberries is brilliant. One of those classics that'd be easy to slaughter.

Isn’t it something like two thirds conscripts who are presumably normal Israelis?

I assume that if they’re going to prosecute Vylan for what he said they will prosecute all of the crowd that joined in as well. Thought not.

Indeed. There are Jewish communities in Israel that refuse to serve in it. It's a political issue as to whether they should be forced to or not.

I don't think Vylan has a problem with them.

If Lewis Capaldi chanted death to all the illegal immigrants, I wonder if he would be in jail right now.

What about those young kids who serve as part of their public service? Some of whom repelled Hamas on October 7th and saved many lives. Should they die too?

Probably a question for Vylan rather than Benji i'd have thought.

I was hoping to catch a bit of Scissor Sisters but the feed from the Woodsies Stage failed. I know they're cheesier than a wotsit fondue, but I saw them at Homelands in Winchester in the mid 00s and they're a fun live act.

Saw them at the BIC a few weeks back, camp as a row of tents, but a really good act. Shame they couldn't convince Anna Mantronic to join them again.

They utterly destroyed Comfortably Numb, so for that they can go the same way as the IDF...

"Death to the IDF" is different from "Death to every member of the IDF", and the former is clearly a comment on the institution and not on every individual within it (and certainly not on "Jews", everyone's favourite conflation).

In the same way that I would like the Russian army to get smashed in Ukraine, I do not wish death on every poor sod who gets caught up in it, nor on every Russian Orthodox Christian.

That said, chanting it in the context it was chanted, without nuance or subtlety, was obviously likely to inflame and cause anger.

Anyway, that's enough about this.

A 'criminal' investigation has been opened now.  I suspect, with the PM declaring that it was 'hate speech', the local bobbies will be under pressure to agree with that and formally press charges.

I can only assume this will then go down the prioritised route for investigation / prosecution - although, despite the PM's proclamation, I can't work out which one of the five types of 'hate crime' this would fit under :

Quote

The law recognises five types of hate crime on the basis of: Race; Religion; Disability; Sexual orientation; Transgender identity.

It doesn't tick any box on a proper interpretation. It also doesn't tick any box under the public order act. The proposed victims, as Benji highlights, are an institution, and in a foreign jurisdiction. As stupid as his rant was, it's hard to see which crime box it ticks. Like you say, there may be a liberal interpretation of the law though to prove the PM's point.
