Sunday Telegraph Report

The Mirror had it down as Derby were so poor they made us look good, ****s.

Good report in the Telegraph, but I would have liked a footnote after; "the south coast’s poorer sister*"

*In cash only, not history, culture, style, class or time spent in the top flight of English football.

Pompey have a better trophy winning history than us if you go back far enough.

Two Top flight titles and two FA cups.

Telegraph...

Southampton, a whisker away from dropping into the third tier of English football on the final day of last season, began the new campaign with the goal of consolidating their divisional status after being plunged into debt with no more parachute money at their disposal. But could they just be the season’s surprise package?

Don't you love the fickle media?

Its surprising the things people will make critical comment about, especially as Jan's quote wasn't even a prediction. All he is reported to have said is "I hope we can get into the playoffs this season.." Would it be better to 'hope we avoid relegation', or 'hope we can hold a mid-table spot'. Surely all Saints fans hope we can make a play off spot. Some may doubt it, but even doubt doesn't preclude hope, and there is no evidence yet to say its beyond this squad so lets keep hoping and be pleased that Jan has set his sights high.

They don't count.

Ages ago.

It's a nasty little club. End of.

Slightly convenient thinking, don't you feel..? If it was us with those Championships you'd be singing a different song. Credit where it's due. Pompey don't have 27 unbroken years in the top flight to be proud of though. And they might end up being a yo-yo club, or worse, if they don't get their proposed stadium.

or their finances under control. £60M debt on their last accounts. With the credit-crunch in full swing it willn't be too long before they do a Leeds.

Automatic promotion is our objective and deep down JP agrees with me.

most papers were more concerned with Derby's problems than our victory.

will just have to stick it to Blackpool ?

anyway club has always been at its best when it had little publicity

To be fair, Derby's problems are "the story". In the wider world Southampton winning one game is not quite earth shattering news, despite how well we played yesterday. Derby's, and Jewell's, woes, are hilarious, though.

Being low profile is a good thing. Let's keep everything nice and quiet and stealthly establish ourselves in the top eight before anyone starts cottoning on to the revolution ;)

Also from Derby's local paper:

Like this: "Derby were handed a football lesson in their own backyard by a bunch of kids who had lost their opening two matches in the Championship... And those youngsters played beautifully."

Simple - Paul Jewell is a "golf course" manager - good laugh and lots of chums on the ex-player/pundit/old boys network chummery curcuit. So he gets the easiest rides of any manager I've ever known.

If he got sacked tomorrow, you won't be able to move for the old chums lining up to say he didn't have enough time to turn it round. I mean, it's so unreasonable to expect a manager to win one game in thirty-odd league games, isn't it? What do these fickle fans want? Blood?!!

Billy Davies (games Derby have won since he was sacked - zero. Players signed since he was sacked - 39 (or so) ) must have a bit more than a wry old smile on his face...

Good shout, we are a small fish in a big pond so the focus will be on the so called bigger club. Good to see some papers actually focused on the game though rather than the club.
