Having just watched that match.....we had better get some more Wottons in than Lallanas!

Physical, pace, strong tackling and managers that had plans for their sides....

The sooner we start rebuilding the better Mr Wotte or whoever because its going to be tough for the delicate little flowers we have.

We needed more Wottons, preferably better-than-Wottons, this year in the Championship, but I do agree, players like McGoldrick are going to get a bit of a shock IMO, let's hope they can man up a bit ready for the rough and tumble of League One.

Why does everyone seem to think McGoldrick is a powderpuff? Since january (and his massive upturn in form) one of his best attributes has been his ability to run at defenders and hold players off. He has great strength.

Do not entirely agree , watching the game Millwall have a solid back 4 who constantly win the ball in the air especially at set plays so imo, that puts a question mark over Perry and , dare i say it, Davis whose weakest part is crosses.

But they did also have a couple of luxury players like Martin who created the goal

What shone out as well as they all knew when to get it down and pass it and when to hoof it 50 yards away, they also were very fit and closed down very quickly.

IMO Wotton may be to old and slow even for League 1, Lallana will have to expect some rough treatment if he starts going in circles in midfield because he will be hit hard.

It is going to be a tough season , if we are still playing that is

I don't agree with the above at all. Both MK Dons and Peterborough have 'delicate little flowers' and have performed well. Plus, the bloke who scored the goal was about 5 foot tall and probably weighed about 8 stone!

Now if he could only combine that with some basic footballing skill like passing and shooting, and try doing that "running" thing when he has the ball (not that I've noticed him doing it without either), he'd be second or maybe third rate. Woohoo !

Yes let's forget having a sensible balance and have 11 cloggers that can't run.

In fact, given that with every relegation we get "it's stronger and more physical, the players won't cope", I suggest we sign 11 players from the conference south as they must be hard as ****.

I'd be trawling the Sholing Press Sunday Division 4 myself...

As long has he has a big lump up front with him, he'll be fine. He was much more effective when playing the withdrawn striker roll. He will never be any good as a loan striker because he can't play with his back to goal.

I thought it was a good game and technically they tried to play proper football. We will have trouble geting out of the league

One of the things that has bugged me about saints acadamy is that we do not seem to concentrate on pace and athletic ability. All the other clubs young players always seem to be quick athletic and strong. All ours seem rto be short of pace and weedy

I don't think that's the case, Gobern's big and strong and fast and we've brought through loads of pacy players (Walcott, Dyer, Thomson). It's not like you can coach pace anyway.

Having said that, Gareth Bale spent 6 months at Spurs working on his upper body and now looks like a fridge with a monkey's head on it, so there's a lot to be said for upper body strength.

No you cant teach pace but you can opick it.Look at the stereotype Arsenal player, all are fit athletic and pacey. He doesnt have the monopoly of getting players like that

Funnily enough Nick thats exactly what we have had all season, really since big Cedric went we have not had the physical presence up front or elsewhere.

If you look at the make up of our Ressies most are very good technical players but none have that extra muscle needed to compete when it gets physical.

Paterson isn't exactly the robust centre forward but the best we have and will do Ok if treated better this season.

We do have pace in Thomson and White etc but not very strong.

Football is a game of opinions...I thought last night was a very physical game...others didn't fair play. I still believe to succeed next season we will need to be physically stronger defensively, a good right back(Fish/Molyneux at left back), Lloyd/Gillet plus one other battler in the middle and pace out wide. We need a big lump up front who can battle and win the ball in the air.

90% of successful teams have that set up in the lower divisions.

Perry is extremely good in the air, especially for his size.

Agree about Davis though.

Millwalls centre forward was a useless lump but they said he scored quite few goals. They had a good winger and strong athletic midfielders.Leeds likewise in fact both teams looked as good as most in the CCC

People called Rasiak and Stern useless lazy lumps but they scored plenty for us!

As we know there is not the gulf between CCC and League 1 that there is between CCC and Prem but we will need to do what no manager has apart from Pearson...that is bring in suitable players for the division we are in.

Lucketti, Perry and Wright were exactly what we needed, Pericard failed but can see why he was loaned given his size.

We need to get our squad sorted almost as soon as we have the gren light with a board - we cannot waste another pre-season like the last few years.

Thats why I would like Wotte replaced or someone else bought in alongside like Cotteril and Boothroyd they have contacts aqnd know what to buy in this division. Apart from Size who has Wotte bought in that was of any help?

Skilful players can often look after themselves.

Remember Terry Paine, hardly ever got injured by thuggish defenders, and had a reputation for being able to more than look after himself!

Not sure if they are "thuggish defenders" imo they are big strong and quick who use there body strength to achieve good defending

We should definitely try and keep hold of Perry (Keeping hold of Davis goes without saying)

Perry is strong, solid, good in the air and experienced, something we are going to need next year. He seems to me to be like what a proper centre back should be... He'll be good for us next year.

Can't read too much from yesterday's game- histories between the two teams, partisan crowd. Half the challenges were badly timed and were either blown up for or should have been fouls. Teams do mix it (think the standard of the league 2 playoffs has been excellent - shrewsbury like to pass it). It seems that pace is the greatest attribute you can have in League 1.

Ryan Smith has pace. He got picked.

By the way Swansea and Doncaster both came up from League 1 playing very good football and just carried it on in the CCC. Teams that come up scrapping don't tend to find it as easy at the next level. Same way teams going up to the Premiership who haven't mastered actually playing football can struggle more, like Derby. You need a bit of both. Can't all be like Stoke can we.

Or, erm, West Brom either.

Playing style doesn't mean anything when you get promoted to the premiership it's all about money when you get to that level. You can play like Brazil in the premiership but if you don't have two decent centre backs and a couple of players who can put the ball in the back of the net you're going to get relegated.

Ajax academy 15 years ago were recruiting on TIPP - Technique / Intelligence / Pace / Personality; don't know the ideal proportions but would seem to be sound fundamentals for the modern game. Would suggest 30/20/30/20 would be somewhere near.

Be very surprised if our academy players and scholars weren't recruited on similar criteria but obviously each player's individual components will be different.

Agreed with the original post that we need a more aggrssive/defensive midfielder to play along side Gillett next season, and if they don't go up, I'd suggest Nadjim Abdou from Millwall. He was outstanding last night, won virtually every challenge he went in for, and he scored the winner, although obviously if they go up he won't drop divisions. Used to play for Plymouth last year if i'm not mistaken.

And also from Millwall, Whitbread would be a decent signing, better than Lancashire at CB. For anyone who watched the game, he was the one who got KO in the second half and 5 mins later was back playing. Nails.

Andy Robinson from Leeds would be good also
