"Ones that got away" eleven

Wade Elliott's success today reminds me - has anyone managed to compile a "ones that got away" 11? In other words, 11 players who were either Saints fans or on Saints books but never got a sniff, who then went on to be top drawer players (or potentially so with Elliott). It can include players who eventually did come back past their best.

Up front we've probably got Kevin Phillips, Scott MacDonald and possibly Vokes - Bobby Robson too perhaps?

Midfield - Dennis Wise, Wade Elliott, Brian Howard, Darren Anderton - any others?

Anyone with a long memory got any defenders or a goalkeeper? Was Phillips a defender when he was here?

Matt Mills, Martin Cranie, Leon Best, Dexter Blackstock, Cedric Baseya, Theo Walcott, Gareth Bale
I was really after the ones that didn't get a sniff here - not the ones that we let go reluctantly. Has Cedric Baseya become a top drawer player already?

Gazza had a trial here didnt he? I know the scouting network picked up the likes of Drogba, Malouda, Mido, Adebayor but couldnt put a deal together for what ever reasons. Weren't we turned down for a work permit for Maxi Lopez who went on to play for Barcelona.

The 4 recent ones that spring to mind straight-away are Brian Howard, Wade Elliott & Scott McDonald and Vokes

This thread cheers me up. If we had got where were are because we regulalrly let fantastic players slip through our fingers it would make things even worse. Given the number of young players and trialists who have passed through over the years, it doesnt seem like we've misjudged too many.

If my memory serves me correct, A certain Mr Lowe didn't think Didier Drogba was worth go.

well he has good judgement then doesn't he.

5 goals in 32 premier league appearances for someone who's supposedly one of the world's best strikers and is worth supposedly £20m+ is extremely poor.

This may be completely wrong but I'm sure I heard somewhere we didn't sign Drogba because £1.5 million was too much for him

To be fair, when we tried to sign him he was at Le Mans who were in the French 2nd Division, £1.5 million for someone from that league at the time (I say that because we spent similar on some other French kid!) was stupid. Plus, his goalscoring record at Le Mans was awful.

Yes, in a season he was injured for a large part of, and fell out with Scolari hence his exit? Everything he has done in the last few years suggests what a poor signing he would be for £1.5m considering we paid about the same if not more for Ormerod? and he was WICKED!!!!!!

Also, I recall we tried to get DaMarcus Beasley before he went to PSV, later went to City and is at Rangers now looks a useful player, MLS rejected our offer as they didnt think we were the right club for him or some rubbish like that?

DaMarcus Beasley is utter sh*te.

Calm down about Drogba. He was rubbish in his first season for Chelsea and they spent £20m on him.

We were looking at him several years before that, and if we had signed him there is no guarantee he would have become the same Drogba we know now - remember he has a tiny attitude problem and Saints may well have bombed him out after a season for being an arse.

Remember, Skacel and Delgado would be whinged about as "great lost world beaters" to this day if we never got round to signing them.

Rosicky was eager to play in the Prem, Strachan was quoted 12 million by Dortmund but didn't even follow it through with the powers that be as it was obviously way out of our price range.

One week later, we signed Neil McCann for 1.5 million.

Seeing as he cost about the same as Brett Oh-My-God, still couldnt be all bad, Im sure he was still better in his rubbish season than Brett in his best, whilst Beasley is hardly a world beater, as someone else above has pointed out we later signed McCann shortly after, and wow what a player he was?

I genuinely cannot understand how he was ever even a professional footballer, let alone a premiership player, my word he was awful!

Decisions like these must point to why Strachan got fed up and walked out?

You think you're bad do you? We disbanded our youth team with the wise words from our manager, that there was nothing to be found in the Portsmouth area but fish. So we released on the same day for nothing young Peter Shilton and young Mick Mills. ffffggggarrrrrrrgggghhh. lol at us.

Thought the figure was nearer £8m?

Would have been worth it IMO.

Kaka?? Is that true? must be a different Kaka, surely?

Bit of an urban legend really I think. Rumour has it we agree a fee of around £3.5m a year before he joined Milan, but the deal fell through because we couldn't get a work permit.

That's the story I heard, probably about as reliable as most of the ITKs on here.

Chill out. Football club signs some rubbish players and may have also passed up on some other players. Gee whizz.

It's such a pity we signed useless f*ckers like Marsden, Beattie, Svennson and Neimi.

PS - there was not a meeting where Southampton football club had to decide between signing Didier Drogba or Brett Ormerod there and then.
