Some great memories here. Don't forget the half-time scoreboard by the clock at the corner of Archers Road. The scores would only be put up about 10 minutes into the second half and they were labeled A, B, C etc so you had to buy a programme to work out which score was for which game. Alternatively you could try and peer over the shoulder of someone else with a programme. You also needed a programme to identify the players from their shirt number - no names on shirts in those days of course. Obviously you would recognise the Saints players by sight anyway. There was only 1 sub per game so the pool of first team regulars would be smaller than today and it wasnt unusual to see the same 11 play week after week. Occasionally someone would be dropped after a poor game and I suppose there were injuries like now. Suspensions would have been less common as bookings and sendings off (no cards) were rarer then although the play was a lot more physical.

In the 70s there would only be 2 games on motd - a main game and a "lesser" game. The other matches wouldn't be shown at all. It was quite unusual for Saints to be featured - maybe 3 times a season or so. I think the showing of all the goals at least from the top league started later in the 80s which was also when BBC and ITV started to show quite a few live games, despite the popular myth that there was hardly ever any live football on TV before Sky.

Was that near Delgado Way that kept getting closed for repairs?

Did everyone else get charged the £1 booking fee even for the print at home option? The order page made it sound like it only applied if you wanted to collect or have it posted but I still got charged.
-
Probably. Hull are in the same position that we were in in 2005 - having to win at home against Man Utd and hope other games go in their favour. I hope they do better than we did as I would like to see them stay up.
-
If it happens would we go straight into the league stage or would we need to play a qualifying round ?

And wasn't it Walsh that was sent off for retaliating?

I've already started to see articles about the premiership being a "low standard" this year. Expect to hear more of this if we stay where we are. Of course there cannot be any other explanation for teams like Saints being in the top 4.

If we win and Aston Villa lose against Arsenal then we'll go 2nd in the table - and we'd almost certanly stay there after Sunday's games thanks to our goal difference. I know it doesn't mean much as this stage but it would still be nice to see. Sorry about tempting fate and all that.

Dennis Wise? Did you mean Mark Dennis?

Post Match Reaction: Newcastle United 1-1 SAINTS

It's 2 points from 5 games isn't it? We beat Hull before that. -
BT Sport to show Champions League and Europa League football from 2015

It's not just Sky who have lost the rights - it is ITV as well. This means no games for those of us who refuse to pay for subscription TV. BT says they will show the final free-to-air but I bet they won't do it for many other games. -
Someone has put up a (not very good quality) video of the goal under http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tv-n4XtYHQ I don't think you can blame Boruc too much for it.

We didn't just lose - we got hammered 1-5. I was there as a young boy and persuaded my Dad that we should leave before the end - and we missed Shilton's goal.

Anyone named their pet with a Saints related name?

But could she score past Tim Flowers from 40 yards out? -
In the recent Manchester derby, City did not start with any British outfield players. I suppose it's possible that he had this game mixed up in his mind which would mean that apart from - it being a different deby - only applied to one of the teams - even that team had an English keeper ... he would be spot on.

Isn't it W2 D3 L3 ? (Fulham, Arsenal, Everton home games were all draws IIRC)
-
Yeah those games really saved our season. Strange that we won those but couldn't win at home against any of Wigan, Fulham, Norwich, Swansea, Sunderland, QPR, West Ham, West Brom or Stoke. OK, it's unrealistic to think we would win all of these games but they are the kind of matches that we'll need to be more consistent at winning if we are going to finish higher next year.

I remember posting this quote from John Motson when he previewed the Swansea game last autumn: "Only one club has stayed up after losing eight of their opening 10 Premier League games, but looking on the bright side that team was Southampton (in 1993-94). " So we've now done it twice!

Agree with all that and let's not forget the highlight of that season with DM in charge: Saints 3 Man Utd 1 (also known as "the grey shirts game") - at a time when Saints were in deep relegation danger and United were heading for the title.

It should have brought back memories for Rednapp of the Everton 2-2 game in our relegation season (when Crouch shot weakly at the keeper instead of taking it to the corner flag with 30 secs to go and us 2-1 up) - except he seems to have wiped that season from his memory.
