My polling card turned up yesterday. It probably is Mark Hughes although he did score a crucial goal in the 3-3 draw with Blackburn when we were 3-1 down and heading for relegation in '99 which could be said to have been worth all the money we spent on him! Whenever I see Hughes I never think of him as an ex-Saint. Credit to him for being involved in the goals but for me he just surrenders possession too much, plays the wrong pass a lot and is weak in the challenge. He also disappears from games, in fact in the U21's game I missed a few minutes and when I came back it took about 10 minutes before I even noticed him to the point where I thought he'd been subbed. As for having played at a high level being a benchmark for forming opinions, well I think that's unfair. We all know the fitness and dedication needed to be a pro player but that doesn't mean we can't have a voice when it comes to watching the people we pay a lot of money to see. Yes some players are unfairly maligned by fans to the point when they can't see any good in them but this is limited to the idiotic few. I don't agree with stuff people say here, at games or in the pub but they still have a right to say it.
